2016 NFL Week 5: Steelers Friday Night Five Questions

Another week has come and gone and Week 5 of the 2016 NFL regular season is already underway. The Pittsburgh Steelers will host the New York Jets Sunday at Heinz Field and enter the contest as heavy favorites even though they currently sport a very long list of injured players. Even so, the Jets will be without several key starters on Sunday as well.

A Steelers win would result in a 4-1 record with two weeks to go before their bye. While Sunday isn’t a must-win for the Steelers, it’s a game that most of us expect them to win. As usual, we look forward to covering this upcoming game for you from top to bottom and thankfully this one will be played early on Sunday.

As usual, I have five questions for you to answer on this lazy Friday night and I hope several of you will provide me with some entertainment by doing just that in the comments below.

Have a great weekend and peace and love to all of you.

1 – Will you be more disappointed in Steelers offense if they don’t score 24 or more points against the Jets, or the defense if they allow 24 or more points to New York?

2 – On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being very confident, how would you currently rate your confidence in the Steelers defense entering Week 5?

3 – How many total touches and total yards from scrimmage will Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell have against the Jets?

4 – The Steelers will wear their 1934 bumblebee throwbacks for a final time Sunday at Heinz Field against the Jets. Let me know how you have felt about these alternate uniforms dating back to their inception in 2012. In other words, have you loved/hated them the entire time, or did you hate them at first only to have them grow on you?

5 – True or false: Sammie Coates will not only have 80 or more yards receiving Sunday against the Jets, he’ll also register his first career touchdown during the game.

  • Spencer Krick

    1. Offense for sure.
    2. 5, would be a 6 if Shazier was healthy.
    3. 15 for 125 yards. I think he breaks another one late.
    4. I have loved the Bee uniforms since I saw them.
    5. I’m gonna say True. I have a hunch he’s due.

  • 1. Probably the defense giving up 24 given the Jets offensive injuries. That being said, if the Steelers ring up the scoreboard to the tune of 45+ and the defense lightens up in the 4th quarter and they give up a meaningless garbage time score or two, I will care much, much less.

    2. An optimistic 6.5. If there was a better pass rush, that would get them over the 8.0 range.

    3. Hopefully 150+ total yards and a score or two. That would go a long way to help secure a victory in fantasy football.

    4. They are an eyesore and I would hate them even more if they ever played bad in them. But they seem to play well in those hideous bumble bee jerseys.

    5. True, he will not. I expect there to be a lot of short passes and screens to keep the Jets D line off balance. They may take a shot or two but because Coats has gain notoriety for going deep, I think the Jets bracket him, the deep shot may be targeting DHB or Wheaton instead for this week.

  • PaeperCup

    1) Disappointed, absolutely for the offense. This offense’s potential is off the charts. There’s very little reason why they shouldn’t. We know what this defense is, and that is not that good. Of course a well rounded game by all like last week is desired. If the offense scored only 21 in an efficient and mistake free game, I’d be completely happy.
    2) 8. This is a good team. Not flawless by any means, but if they keep their focus, do their job, they are a top 5 team.
    3) 22 touches. 130 yards. 100 yards rushing on 18 carries, 30 yards receiving on 4 receptions.
    4) Hated them at first. But they built an identity with them. And I’ll miss them. Some of my favorite memories involve them. One being Bens 6 TD game against the colts. I also always think of Heath in those unis.
    5) False. I don’t think He’ll get 80 yards. But I do think he’ll get a TD.

  • Sdale

1.) Defense. That’s still a pretty stingy defense even with some injuries. The defense would really have to crap the bed to give up that many points to that team, and if they do, I think there is a good chance we lose this game.
2.) 5 overall. Still don’t have an edge rusher and some teams can expose the blitz if we bring it. For this particular game, I’d say 7.
    3.) 24 total for 143. 16 for 63 on ground and 8 for 80 in the air.
4.) Hated ’em to start…I called them the jail break uniforms. However, I’ve grown to like them for some unknown reason and I’m sad to see them go.
    5.) True

  • gjnn

    1) More disappointed in the D. The Jets have got a great D-Line – I’d be happy with 2 TDs and 3 FGs to get us to 23. If we allow 24+ to R.Fitzpatrick, we’re in trouble.
    2) 5.5. We need a pass rush. Still don’t know how we took Dupree over Shane Ray. Still appalled by that decision.
    3) 27-140 and 1 td. 21-90-1 on the ground and 6-50-0 through the air.
    4) Always liked them – still do.
    5) False.

  • Riverstko

    1. If the defense allows 24 or more points
    2. 7
    3. 25 touches 200 yards
    4. I always loved the bumblebee uniforms
    5. True

Week 4 recap: 36 respondents with 5 points up for grabs in week 4. Consensus is that Shazier should be extended a 5th year even with his injury history; most still confident in his upside. Vote was 27-6 in favor with 3 suggesting either to trade him, switch him to safety or the equivocal: ‘it depends.’

Respondents estimation of the total yardage by Bell & brown ranged from 160-383 yards with the average being 254. The Bees actually gained 242 yards and Agustin ARG’s 245 was closest to the pin.

Disappointment varied greatly with 22 focused on some aspect of the offense; 11 on the defense and 3 on the entire team in general. Big Ben collected the most ire with 11 votes and Wheaton was 2nd on offense with 3 votes. On defense Heyward and/or Tuitt got 4 votes while the inability to rush the passer got 3 which would include them making 7.

Generally, folks believe Le’veon Bell & Deangelo Williams will be on the field at the same time for less than 10 plays with one notable exception that saw them there for 40+ plays. The average response was 7.2; while the median was 5.75 which limits the impact of the big outlier. Well, they were on the field together for 9 plays but no one got it – 6 respondents predicted either 8 or 10 and each got a point.

Lot’s on interesting bold choices with 19 different players designated for something big – though some were
negative such as Been being sacked 5 times – reverse psychology? Justin Gilbert got the most mentions but only played 8 snaps. Eight respondents either got full or partial credit for this one as both th offense and defense had a number of players who made some big plays.

Agustin ARG aced week 4 collecting all 5 possible points. He made the call of Darrius Heyward-Bey catching a long TD pass and his prediction that AB & Le’veon’s would combine for 245 yards was closest to the actual mark of combined 242 yards between the two. PaeperCup, The Truth & Mike Grant tallied 3 point in a tie for 2nd place. For the season, PaeperCup surges to the overall lead after 2 consecutive strong weeks with 7 points. Wreckless drops to 2nd place with 5 points after being shut out week 4. RickM
joins him in 2nd place by steady performances along with Agustin ARG.

  • WreckIess

    1. Defense.
    2. 6.5
    3. 27 for 165
    4. I like them, but I wish we wore the Alts from 07 instead.
    5. True.

  • SkoolHouseRoxx

    1. If we don’t score more than 24.
    2. I’m at a 7. I feel good about this group.
    3. 28 touches 215 yds
    4. I love the Bumblebees! Reminds me of Ben having, IMO, the best qb performance in a regular season game in nfl history!
    5. True! Think he’ll have a great game!

  • SkoolHouseRoxx

    One day!

  • JohnB

    1. I’d Be more disappointed in the offense. this is a team that’s set to score 30 as long as 3 Bs play.
    2. I’m at a 6/10 for this defense. Suspect, but if they play like last week i’ll have more confidence.
    3. 30 Touches for Bell at 149 yards total
    4. The Bee Unis were gross till we started winning in them. Wouldn’t buy one like I had the other TBs.
    5. I’m going to say true only because of the lack of playmakers at WR. I don’t think he’ll get the TD though.

  • Jeff McNeill

    1) offense
    2)5
    3)23 for 165
    4) dislike
    5)false

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

    1. Defense. The offensive line injury lows has lowered my expectations of the offense. Defense must step-up.
    2. Confidence level was 6 but now 4; losing Shazier, Gilbert, Golden or tthis game along with Jones & Chickillo dinged impacts depth which is needed in these games.
    3. 30 touches (23 runs/7 receptions) for 195 total yards.
    4. Loved the BumbleBees. read a history that a guy researched and they may have been wron in a couple 1933 games and the 1934 team photo used them. I bought a custom # 35 BLOOD jersey to keep wearing at games.
    5. TRUE! He’s due.

  • William Weaver

    1. I think 27 is the number for the season. If the defense gives up more then 27 and we lose it is their fault. If they give up less then 27 and we lose it is the offense to blame. More disappointed in the offense if they fail then if the defense fails.
    2. Confidence is a 6. Confident they are good enough to win. Not confident enough that they can carry us.
    3. 19 carries and 6 catches. Total of 164 yards.
    4. I have always loved the uniforms. Especially the socks!!
    5. True. Breaks out with 2 touchdowns

  • William Weaver

    Love it!!

  • Matt Manzo

1: Offense! They need to score.

2: Confidence level=6. They can get beat by a smart QB.

    3: 25 touches for 155 yards.

4: I liked the unis at first, now I’m ready for something new. I’d love to see black pants!

5: True, Sammy gets 85 yards and Yes he scores his first TD! Ben now knows to put some extra mustard on the deep balls!

  • PaeperCup

Nice. Go Me. As my bold prediction I predicted Ben would throw ZERO interceptions. I’m not sure if anyone made a similar prediction, but I’m beyond stoked that that one rang true.

  • Jason

    1) offense
    2) 5
    3) 27- 139
    4) Not a fan
    5) False

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

You were only one to predict 0 INT’s. Someone else predicted 2. Great call!

  • Matt Manzo

I love these recaps! One day I’m gonna get a point!

  • Sim

1 – Offense. Defense depends on Offense getting ahead.

    2 – 7

    3 – 25 / 190

    4 – Love them.

    5 – True.

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

You got 1 point from the week 3 debacle.

  • RickM

    1. Toughest question of year for me. Worried about a Fitzpatrick rebound…but also worried about the O-Line protection for Ben. Marginally I’ll be more disappointed if the Jets score more than 24 with Decker out and possibly Enumwa out as well.
    2. A “6”. I think it was a perfect storm last week with the Steelers out for revenge and K.C. a little complacent. Not convinced the D challenges are fixed.
    3. 22 for 140 yards with the receiving yards comparable to, if not more than, the rushing yards
    4. Don’t like, sorry
    5. False. Less than 80 yards and no TD’s.

Was more confident the other two times I said it but…Enjoy the Win.

  • Steeler-Drew

    1) The offense despite having to start Hubbard. With Bell back and how good they looked last week It would be disappointing if they threw in a clunker at home with the expectation of perfect weather conditions.

    2) 5. They are a work in progress but could raised in a hurry if throw in two more consecutive performances like KC.

    3) 28 touches with a 165 yards.

    4) They were downright hideous at first sight and they have never grown on me.

    5) False. Not this week with Hubbard starting. Have to really like his progress though. Looking like he is coming into his own with the intermediate route as well as being a deep threat.

  • Douglas Andrews

    1. I guess i’d be more disappointed in the defense if the Jets score more than 24. Not a Fitzpatrick fan and the weapons on the Jets are good not great.

    2. Going into this game about a 6 and growing. Playing against Fitzpatrick you can get away with a nice mix of dropping into coverage and blitzing at times.

    3. 22 carries and 5 catches. Total of 165 yards. 40 yards receiving and 125 running it.

    4. Thought they were just okay at first but they’ve really grown on me. Not saying i’d go out and buy a jersey but I like them.

    5. True. Sammie steps up for 8 catches 110 yards and a TD.

  • PaeperCup

Thanks…glad I was optimistic on that one.

  • Phil Brenneman II

    1. More disappointed in the offense. In my opinion that is really the only answer. Expectations are always going to be higher for our offense so the disappointment would go hand and hand with that.

    2. 7. If everyone was healthy I would probably go about 8.5

    3. 22 touches for 125 yards

    4. I can’t remember exactly but I believe I only ever hated them before they actually wore them in a game. I can remember Isaac Redman being one of the players they showed “modeling” them and what really made them awful (at the time) was the pants, not the actual jersey. Not sure what changed exactly but I like them a lot now. Have a Tuitt jersey and it is the favorite in my collection.

    5. True

  • Chris92021

    1. Neither. I am expecting a letdown by the offense. Big Ben can’t throw for 3 or more TDs in 7 consecutive games, especially if Chris Hubbard does indeed start at RT. I mean, I would almost rather see Matt Feiler get the start when he inevitably gets called up tomorrow than Hubbard, who I wonder why he is even on the team. As for the defense, I expect Fitzpatrick to right the ship, especially with no Robert Golden and Ryan Shazier again.

    2. 2. I give them a 2. As long as Burns and Davis are out there, that is a third down conversion due to a missed tackle waiting to happen. The pass rush is nonexistent and I don’t have faith in any linebacker not named Ryan Shazier to cover any RB or TE. Also, this defense can’t be trusted to make stops when absolutely necessary (forcing a 3 and out to give the offense the ball back with less than 3 minutes to go when behind).

    3. Hopefully at least 25 because that is our best chance to win this Sunday. Hopefully 18-22 carries and 4-7 catches.

    4. I love those jerseys and socks. Hate the pants.

    5. False. This is the first game Coates does not get a 40 plus yard reception and he does not catch a TD.

Enjoy the weekend, y’all. I have a bad feeling about this game.

  • 1.) Since I predict the score to be Jets 17 Steelers 35, I’d be disappointed on both ends of that question.

    2.) 8

    3.) 25 touches for 190 yards. (130 rushing and 60 receiving.)

4.) I have to admit, at first, I disliked them. I couldn’t stand the stripes, and the way those white ‘number plates’ are sewn onto the jerseys, were not to my liking at all. But after a while, I came to like them. We played pretty well when we wore them. The only part of the entire uniform that I could never get used to were those striped socks. I felt the socks should have been either all black or all gold.

5.) I don’t know about the whole 80 yards thing, but I don’t see why he shouldn’t finally score a TD this week. Whether it be on a short pass down close to the end zone or on something like an end-around down by the goal line, I don’t see why it wouldn’t happen. However(,) I don’t see him having any long explosive receptions against the Jets like he had last week. If we can keep Ben protected for the better part of the game, I think he will be concentrating mostly on getting the ball to A.B., the TE’s and Le’Veon Bell in the passing game.

  • Milliken Steeler

    1) The defense

    2) 7 The O line and offense has more injuries and I’m okay with Vdub and others subbing.

    3) 27 touches for 185 yards

    4) The first time I saw them socrebleu! came to mind. Then they grew on me.

    5) If Ben has the time, true. The Jets secondary is banged up and playing badly but I wouldn’t be surprised if Wheaton scores more.

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

I was feeling pretty good, now you have me scairt.

  • Chris92021

The Steelers under Mike Tomlin when facing teams with losing records (at the time of the game) at Heinz Field since 2012? 6-4, with 3 of those wins coming against the Browns. I hope I am dead wrong but I am bracing myself for a bunch of sloppy plays on defense and the offense looking like week 3 instead of last week.

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

My bet is that the Patriot’ fanbase has lower blood pressure on aggregate than the Steeler’s fan base but that even goes back to Cowher days; some kind of repulsion to blowing out the opposition.

  • LucasY59

    1. Defense (if they give up that much its going to result in a loss …most likely) I dont think the Offense will be scoring a ton on Sunday so 24 is actually a pretty good prediction (and should be enough for a win) The D should be able to hold them to less than 24 so I expect a W

    2. 8, going into a game against a opponent’s offense that isnt very good, I think they will be ok for the next couple weeks (and hopefully after that they will be closer to 100% as far as player participation and health) in 3 weeks the D will have a much bigger test (and if the pats game was this week I would be flipping my rating)

    3. I think they will be needing him to have a similar performance to last week, so 25 touches and 175 yds seems like a good prediction

    4. I like All alternate uniforms, my first reaction was that I didnt like the Bumblebees as much as the 75th anniversary throwbacks, but the Bee’s grew on me especially as the “Killer Bees” emerged wearing these uni’s so I like them even more because of that (the tan pants are the one thing I dont like about them)

    5. If Revis is playing and covering him I think there is actually a really good chance he could have a 80 yd TD, regardless of who is covering him I would like to see him have a bit of a breakout game so I am going to say True

  • The Truth

    1. No disappointment either way. The defense has to prove they can be good week to week. The offense needs to show some consistency also. I have more faith in the offense.

    2. I give it a 5.

    3. About 150.

    4. I have no feeling on the looks. It’s just a money maker for the NFL.

    5. True.

  • Big White

    1. Don’t score 24. Jets are solid up front but the back end is a wet paper bag.
    2. Eight. It would be less, but that game will be over by 3rd quarter.
    3. 22 touches, 160 Total Yards
    4. Hate/Love in that order. Ticked off they’re done.
    5. False. Coates is still very unpolished. The scores will come next year, but he’ll do 80.

  • Rocksolid20

    Shazier is hardly ever healthy

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

    2/3 of the time!

  • Nagative Nellie

  • Steelers are going to smash the Jets.

  • Were do I stand? I remember my name only being mentioned once a couple of weeks back.

  • Thomas

1: Defense. Decker is out, and Fitz sucks. Plus Ben’s probably gonna get killed with Hubbard at RT.
2: With Gilbert at RT, 9. With Hubbard at RT, 4.
    3: 20 touches, 70 yards.
4: I’ve loved them from the start
    5: True

  • Chris92021

    I hope you are right.

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

You’re in a 9-way tie for 9th place at the moment. I’m in the same logjam. 71 respondents so far this season.

  • Reader783

    1. Very tough, but offense. The Bills, Chiefs, Bengals and Seahawks all put up massive offensive performances against the Jets and we are the best offense they will have played. Our defense has been too inconsistent for the past 3 years for me to depend on them to get stops, even if Fitz has been atrocious lately.

    2. Five (5). Good game against Redskins (until early 4th quarter), goodish game v Bengals (until early 4th quarter), terrible game v. Eagles, good game against Chiefs, though the offense crushed the Chiefs heart and soul early. Need to see consistency.

    3. 135. This game will be won with strong runs up the gut at our 3 core linemen and then reverting to PA passing to keep the Jets DL off of Ben.

    4. Always loved them. Got some of our biggest wins in them. Colts barnburner 2 years ago comes to mind.

    5. True. Very tricky. I think if Revis plays injured, a couple receivers could have a field day. Jets secondary has had a tough year so far and Sammie is waiting to blow up, so why not this week.

  • Kevin Schwartz

    1) I won’t be disappointed with either. The Jets have a tough defense, and 24 points isn’t that bad.

    2) Probably a 6. We started getting a little pressure on the QB last week, but I would still feel better if we had Dupree back. Also, the whole bend-don’t-break thing isn’t really my favorite strategy. As for the secondary, I would feel better if some consistent performers started to emerge.

    3) 23 for 130. There’s a chance he breaks out for 200, but the Jets are tough against the run, and I think he’ll have a decent amount of his yards through the air.

    4) I’m neutral. I don’t get too worked up about uniforms.

    5) I’m gonna go true. He made some good intermediate plays last week, which will only help in getting him the deep balls and add to his yardage totals. As for touchdowns, that’s always a crapshoot, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to run a play for him and throw him a bone to raise his confidence. Given his size, I would assume he’d be a decent red-zone threat regardless.

  • steelcityinny

    1. Don’t care if they win.
    2. 5, just never sure with this team anymore, I was high for Philly and they laid down, could easily see them doing the same.
    3. 25 touches, 17 runs, 8 passes.
    4. Like the bumblebees now, did not at first glance.
    5. Sammie will exceed 80 yards and get a TD

  • Michael Mosgrove

    1. yes and yes
    2. 4
    3. 15 touches 70 yards

  • Michael Mosgrove

because shane ray had drug problems.

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

Actually not, platooning positions has become more prevalent and the days of ‘starters’ outside the quarterback an offensive line playing 100% of snaps is becoming outdated.

  • Michael Mosgrove

you’re totally right. which is why we have the #1 defense, #1 offense and #1 special teams

  • Hypo Cycloid

    1. Offense. They are supposed to be scoring 30 ppg. That is how we are set up to win.

    2. 3. Defense is simply not good.

    3. 27 touches, 135 yards

    4. Hated at first. But think they are awesome now!

    5. False. 80 plus yards on 3 catches, but no TD.

  • A Football Fan

    The Quality Man
    1. The Steelers D is ranked 31st. They probably will allow 24 or more. But I will be disappointed at the Offense if they can’t cover 24 points

  • A Football Fan

    The Quality Man (cont)
2.One .5 the 31st Ranking speaks for itself. The D has not been higher than 26th since 2012.Anyone rating D above 3 is a dreamer
    3. Running Touches – 23. for 123 yards. Receptions 3 for 45 yards.
    4. Unique is the term that should be applied to once a year uniforms. The Bees are the most Unique!

    5. False. 80 yards with a TD is a tough challenge to any end who has never done it before. But I will be rooting for him to do it—on one play!

Week 5 recap: So far, 33 respondents with 6 points available. Almost an even split between who we would be disappointed in more 14 said offense; 11 said defense; 3 said both equally; 2 said neither and two didn’t care.

Respondents tend to be bullish on the defense – but not overly averaging 5.5 on a scale of 10.

Group averaged 24.6 touches for 151 yards for Bell. With touches ranging from 15-30 and yardage from 70-215.

The Bumble Bees are popular with 22 saying they liked/loved them and only 6 saying they disliked/hated them. Five were meh. A number of folks were converted saying at first they did not like them but then they grew on them. They certainly are unique and I did order a # 35 BLOOD bumblebee jersey. As for the Batman jerseys that are rumored to be in the mill two years from now; I though Dan Rooney had stated back in 2007 that the Steelers would never wear them again but have not been able to find a reference. Never say never.

Respondents are optimistic about Sammie Coates breaking out for 80 yards and a TD. 19 said TRUE while 13 were less optimistic saying FALSE but some indictaed he may get one or the other – maybe seeking partial credit;)

Will try to post results next Friday night – it’s a tight race! I might even have a prize at the end (maybe Dave will spring for a free subscription to Steelers Depot!).
