Steelers Sign WR Cobi Hamilton Off Practice Squad; Waive CB Al-Hajj Shabazz

As expected, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a transaction on Saturday and included them signing a wide receiver off of their practice squad.

Signed to the 53-man roster on Saturday was wide receiver Cobi Hamilton, who has been on the team’s practice squad all season. To make room for Hamilton on the roster, cornerback Al-Hajj Shabazz was waived.

Hamilton, who signed originally with the Steelers just after training camp started this year, caught 8 passes for 84 yards in the four preseason games that he played in. He was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth-round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Arkansas. Since entering the league he has only dressed for one NFL playoff game.

The Steelers promoted Hamilton on Saturday being as wide receivers Markus Wheaton and Sammie Coates are both currently dealing with injuries. Wheaton was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins on Friday with a shoulder injury while Coates headed into the weekend listed as questionable because of a finger injury that he suffered last Sunday in the Steelers win over the New York Jets.

The Steelers should get wide receiver Eli Rogers back on the field on Sunday as the second-year player was able to practice fully all week after missing the team’s last two games with a toe injury. He’ll likely see extensive playing time against the Dolphins in the slot.

As for Shabazz, he will likely be signed back to the Steelers practice squad on Monday or Tuesday. He was promoted last Saturday from the team’s practice squad and played 6 defensive snaps against the Jets.
