After losing Sunday night to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game, the Pittsburgh Steelers are now slated to draft 30th overall in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
The last time the Steelers drafted 30th overall in the first round was in 2005 and it worked out quite well for them as that’s when they selected tight end Heath Miller out of Virginia.
Miller fell to the Steelers that year due to him failing to work out at the combine and his pro day due to a sports hernia. It was a gift that wound up delivering for the Steelers for over a decade.
With the future of current Steelers tight end Ladarius Green up in the air due to him having issues with concussions, one has to wonder if Pittsburgh would once again consider drafting another tight end late in the first round come April.
A few early mock drafts have the Steelers drafting Alabama tight end O.J. Howard in the first round and as we sit here in January, that’s fairly fathomable. The Steelers, however, could certainly use another young outside linebacker or two early in the 2017 NFL Draft.
