Steelers Injury Report: Green, Roethlisberger, Five Others Sit Out Wednesday

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now released their first injury report of the week ahead of Sunday’s road Divisional Round playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs and it includes a total of 10 players.

Not practicing on Wednesday for the Steelers were tight end Ladarius Green (concussion), quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (foot), running back Le’Veon Bell (not injury related), linebacker Anthony Chickillo (ankle), running back Fitzgerald Toussaint (concussion), defensive end Ricardo Mathews (ankle) and linebacker Vince Williams (shoulder).

While Roethlisberger didn’t practice on Wednesday, that’s not too surprising as he’s had Wednesday’s off in the past. While he is currently nursing a foot injury that he suffered this past Sunday, he’s expected to be fine come game time.

Green not practicing is concerning as he remains in protocol. The tight end apparently suffered a setback with his concussion last Friday after practicing fully last Wednesday and Thursday. Green is now joined in protocol by Toussaint, who suffered a concussion this past Sunday.

As for Chickillo and Mathews, the two missed the Wild Card game against the Miami Dolphins because of ankle injuries that they have been dealing with for a few weeks. It will now be interesting to see if either player can practice fully by Friday. Williams, on the other hand, was on the injury report last week but did play against the Dolphins.

Safety Robert Golden (ankle) practiced fully on Wednesday and that’s welcomed news being as he missed the game against the Dolphins with his ankle injury. Golden is the Steelers special teams captain and they will certainly need him back on the field Sunday against the Chiefs.

Safety Sean Davis (shoulder) and defensive end Stephon Tuitt (ankle) are both listed by the Steelers on their injury report as being limited on Wednesday. Davis injured his shoulder against the Dolphins but was able to finish the game. Tuitt, who also played against the Dolphins, is apparently dealing with an ankle injury. He missed the Steelers final two regular season games with a right knee sprain.

  • The Chin

Green should be fine by mini-camp

  • Jeff Papiernik

Ok so I understand Green is still in the protocol which I expected. However, the only way to get out of protocol is to practice. So the 6 million dollar (base salary + signing bonus) question is…WHY THE HECK IS HE NOT PRACTICING? Seriously. I understand he had a setback last week and the practice reaggravated his symptoms. But that was 6 days ago! You’re telling me he still has symptoms from a practice that long ago and a concussion nearly a month ago? Man, I’ve been defending Green all year, but now even I’m getting fed up.

  • srdan

This is the first game where Green isn’t playing adn I don’t feel that disappointed. I guess I’ve made peace with the fact that I shouldn’t expect much from him.

  • Chris92021

    In a perfect world:

Green will be ready to go for the AFC championship game. I feel he will be needed more against New England than Kansas City, who I believe we can run the ball against effectively. Sure, I am getting ahead of myself because KC is not going to be an easy out but if we continually give them the Le’Veon Bell Treatment, they won’t have too many answers on defense to beat us.

  • steeltown

Great news about Golden and something tells me V.Williams will be a go by game day. Mathews is and has been up in the air, but Walton and McCullers have shown well

  • Jeff Papiernik

I just don’t see how he’s going to be ready by then if he’s not ready by this week. What’s going to change now that hasn’t changed over the last 4 weeks?

  • Chris92021

Thank you for putting “normal day off” even though I guarantee many people here will still be scared regardless.

The practice week for me is where the head coach truly earns his salary. Limiting guys like Tuitt and sitting guys like Roethlisberger and Bell at this point are sound coaching decisions. Pretty good for a cheerleader.

  • Jeff Papiernik

Who would be our RB3 if Fitz misses with a concussion? Isn’t Daryl Richardson on the Jags now?

  • Chill out some Jeff. He’ll be fine. And if he doesn’t play, we have gotten by fine without him in the other games. If he can play, it’s a big time bonus. He still has 2 more days to get out of the protocol.

  • gdeuce

concussions are not a pain tolerance issue

  • steeltown

Probably Brown-Dukes on the squad team, but I bet we’d just go into the game with 2RBs Bell and DeWilliams

We also have DJ and Nix, in an emergency

  • Chris92021

If you are right about Green not being ready after this week, then you are right. Nothing we can really do. Worst case scenario: Green ends up retiring and the Steelers don’t get hurt too bad in the cap hit. Thankfully our offense is running well without him. Green’s availability is a luxury at this point, not a necessity. Like most luxuries, I would love to have it but we don’t need it right now. I believe we will be fine without Green this week.

  • srdan

I bet Rosie gets some reps at HB this week just in case.

  • srdan

I wish they would update on Houson. I wonder if he is healhty enough to play. Something tells me he isn’t going to.

  • steeltown

I read somewhere that he’s probably playing

  • Jeff Papiernik

“Gotten by fine” works OK against teams like the Bills, Browns, and Bengals. But we need to be hitting on all cylinders for teams like the Chiefs and especially the Patriots.

  • JohnB

worst comes to worst we got DJ too.

  • srdan

I did too. But on the podcast the Chiefs writer said he wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t play. He said there is something fishy or odd going on.

  • steeltown

    Hmmm… interesting

  • Jeff Papiernik

I’m aware. I suppose at this point I’m mocking his fragile brain that doesn’t know how to take a hit or two and recover within a reasonable amount of time.

  • They will list it soon enough, when ever their practice is over. Check their site tonight. Or Dave usually does it for us when it’s available.

  • Michael James

You know, maybe Green should consider retirement. That’s in no way meant to bash him, but he’s obviously had many concussions and his head/brain doesn’t seem to be made for playing football. That’s very unfortunate, but it’s probably better for him to just live a “normal” life and not risk any more concussions.

  • gdeuce

will you be saying the same things if he can’t remember anything in 20 years, and it was discovered he developed CTE from the hits to his head?

  • We beat the crap out of KC earlier in the year without him.

  • Vic

Yup, he’s pretty much like a special guest now…ce on Jesse james!

  • Jeff Papiernik

He knows the risk. If he can’t hack it, then he shouldn’t have signed a $20 million dollar contract agreeing to offer his services to this organization.

  • Doogie

See Sidney Crosby for how long you can be out with concussion..You never know.

  • Terrible Towel

    Wouldn’t you sign it?

  • Chris

yeah if its that bad he needs to think about life after football

  • blackandgoldBullion

Vincenzo better strap and tape that shoulder and get out there on Sunday. He hits so hard he doesn’t even need the other shoulder to hammer people and every possible ST stud they can need to be out there.

  • SilverSteel

So, I wonder how bad Davis’ shoulder injury is. We need him to be there and ready to go. ALthough I think Dangerfield will be fine if needed.

  • StolenUpVotes

    Wowwwwwwwwwwww

  • Jeff Papiernik

Not if I thought my head was too fragile to fulfill my duties for 4 years

  • SilverSteel

That is not going to happen this time. They were (and we are) different teams. KC looks really good right now.

  • Terrible Towel

    Lol. Ok.

  • Chris92021

I am fully expecting him to be ready to go. How effective he will be is another matter, especially since Marcus Gilbert is no slouch.

  • Big White

    Welcome back Robert Golden!!!

  • TMP_22903

It would be nice to have a healthy (near-full-strength) Chickillo for depth and possibly spell 48 or 92 on a few snaps. Our OLB have been FANTASTIC the past few weeks, but depth is always valuable and 56 has shown he can play.
Has anyone else noticed how 56’s absence has allowed Jarvis to come back into the fold .. and how (don’t look now) JJ is actually playing with impact the past 2 games!?

  • will

lol……..however, his ankle may still bother him!! 😉

  • Steve Johnson

If they bring that guy back in 2017, somebody should be fired. Time to move on, the same thing took place when he was in San Diego.

  • Steve Johnson

This is the playoffs, a brand new season. I hope they get rid of him after the season.

  • Jeff Papiernik

I disagree. His dead cap is like $3.5 million next year. For that price, may as well bring him into camp and see if he can contribute. Otherwise you’re just flushing money down the toilet. It’s not like he can’t produce when he’s on the field.

  • Ni mo

    4 mill not 6

  • Kelly A

“We” hmm, interesting word. First of all Jeff, Ladarius’ concussion issues should not be your burden; that’s for him, the coaches, and the organization that employed him to deal with. Secondly, this team has very capable weapons apart from Ladarius (as you saw last week); he would be a luxury for them to have but they’re not going to rush him out of concussion protocol, risk his future quite frankly, for the sake of appeasing yourself or anyone else that feels the need to complain about a player than pretty much any NFL team would have paid top dollar to sign. So unless you have some magic elixir that can cure his issue, all this complaining is simply a waste of your time.

  • steelersfan

    I wouldn’t bet on it

  • Ni mo

Let someone hit you in the head and let’s see how longs it takes to to recover

  • Garrett Hunt

Can’t win it all without Tuitt imo. Get healthy big man!

  • rystorm06

he’s the ferrrarri that can’t get out of the garage. we got a lemon

  • Jeff Papiernik

I understand that they’re not going to violate the protocol, nor should they. When I say “we need,” what I mean is that if the team is not at full capacity which include Ladarius Green, we will not beat New England. If that happens, so be it, that’s life, there is always next year. But I think Green is talented enough to be that extra little something to put us over the edge this year. And I disagree, I can say what I want on this discussion forum. If complaining helps me, then I can do so. If you feel I’m wasting my time, that’s fine.

  • Ni mo

It’s not green it’s the doctors holding him out have a clue and Wednesday is vets day off let’s see if he practices Thursday and walk thru on Friday if not put him on IR and see what happens minicamp. , but they not going to cut him to much against the ca especially when they have to sign bell extend AB and sign timmoms and have money to carry over for tuitt , and shaz

  • Jeff Papiernik

You might be right, wasn’t 100% on the figure

  • PaeperCup

    MASS PANIC!!!!

  • Ni mo

    Chickilo is not good

  • 6 ring circus

Spcl guest, lol! Exactly. A highly paid recognizeable face to boost ratings. They don’t do much, just make an appeareance, but the crowd loves it, is appreciative and clamors for more. Yep, I do…

  • Jeff Papiernik

Or he could fulfill his contract to the best of his abilities like he intended when he signed it.

  • Jeff Papiernik

I was worried about Davis too, but the fact he was at least limited today is reassuring

  • RickM

Davis’s being able to finish the game was a really good sign. I’m not worried about him. Tuitt limited with an ankle is a little troubling. I assume it’s not much. Ben’s the one I’m watching. He practised last Wednesday before the first playoff game. I know he said he would not practice today. But I want him to eliminate any doubts that he’ll be close to 100% by practicing fully tomorrow.

  • Steel Tippin

We’re going to run all over them, it’s passing I’m concerned about.

  • hojo

    Who exactly?

  • Jeff Papiernik

Pay me $20 million and you can hit away

  • Jeff Papiernik

    Green is not a vet

  • Kelly A

Well perhaps they should worry about Kansas City first and not overlook them to begin with. Secondly, during this time of the year, NO team is at ‘full capacity’ so-to-speak; every NFL team in the postseason have taken their fair share of bumps and bruises, no one is exempted from that; just ask the Packers and them losing Jordy Nelson for the remainder of the playoffs. Understandably so this is a discussion forum and much of the time when people complain about the team and what they like or don’t like; it actually reveals more about themselves, than the person they’re complaining about. This about what you’ve been saying on this forum about how he “shouldn’t have signed that deal”, or that the Steelers ‘wasted their money’; they are capable enough franchise to know whom they should and should not invest their money with. If they need our help to figure that out, I’m sure they would employ one of us on this forum; as we ALL tend to act like we know what’s best. All I can say is this, regardless of whether they have him or not, they’ll be fine; you need to have some faith in that and believe in them.

  • steelburg

He took his helmet off Friday and a fly landed on his head and that put him back into the concussion protocol. No worries though he should be ready by 2018.

  • Jeff Papiernik

I accept the fact he probably won’t be out there this week. I don’t have to be happy about it and I’m well within my rights to express my discontent about it. Call it therapeutic if you want.

  • steelburg

Put a percentage on it. In your opinion what’s the percent chance you think he will suit up and play Sunday? I’m at about a 30 percent chance he plays.

  • Sdale

If he does retire next year, we don’t eat that $3.5 mil cap hit for 2017, right?

  • steelburg

I’m right there with you buddy. I’ve been saying that he is ultra talented but it makes no difference if he can’t play. I have been critical of him also not his talent because that isn’t in question he is a top notch TE when healthy. But I have been questioning his health both long and short term.

  • gdeuce

the team knew that he had a history of injuries before he came here too

  • 50/50. He will or he won’t.

  • There are other ways to get CTE. Check out Dr Ann McKee from Boston University and her study that proves otherwise.

  • Matt Manzo

When did Tuitt hurt his ankle?!

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

I’m hoping we can get past kc without green and I’m praying he play against new England we might really need him for that game

  • Walt Dongo

My ankle hurts as well…Ill be watching the game though, dont worry.

  • Walt Dongo

maybe the camera guy will give him a cameo on the sideline for the KC game…

  • Daniel

Both former chargers injured not surprised. Stop picking up former charger players pls

  • Daniel

Ward would get concussions and still play for crying out loud

  • Daniel

    Swelling on his knee

  • Chris92021

I think we do eat it (see Heath Miller’s cap his for this season). Hopefully Green will be OK and give us a full season in 2017.

  • Jaybird

    0%.

  • Jaybird

DJ would definetly be the worst coming to worst! I’m laughing just thinking of him getting a carry.

  • DirtDawg1964

Wow! You have zero clue how a concussion works. Or the protocol. He can’t practice if he’s having symptoms. Period. And he clearly had a relapse of symptoms. Symptoms can last for months.

I’ve had two concussions I know of. On the last one I could not figure out how to walk up a flight of stairs. I could see the stairs and I knew I should bend my leg and step onto the first stair, but my brain couldn’t quite connect the dots. I just stood there. I had to go dark for a week. No TV, no screen time, no music, no nothing. Dark. And when I tried to go back to work after a few days post that, I lasted a hour. Took me two more weeks before the headaches, confusion and other symptoms disappeared.

This isn’t an ankle sprain. It’s not a tolerance issue. It’s not about the economics. Seriously.

  • Hypo Cycloid

We look really good right now.

  • DirtDawg1964

His concussion symptoms end. You know, like they did the last time around. There is no definitive schedule for recovery. For some people it’s a day. For others it’s months. I met a patient who spent six months recovering from a concussion incurred when she jarred herself stepping off a curb and met another patient who suffered no symptoms at all even though he blacked out and hit the ice face first after a vicious check in hockey.

Physical injuries have normal timelines to them and are relatively predictable. Brain injuries do not.

  • kakello34

Green is on the Golson recovery plan. See you in 2019.

  • DirtDawg1964

Andy Reid said today he expected Houston to play.

  • SilverSteel

He is not a starter yet. But, he is a decent backup. Wouldn’t you say?

  • Jeff Papiernik

Dude, I’m a doctor. I know all about concussions. I know you’re supposed to go dark, yet that didn’t stop AB from being all over snapchat last year with his “Business is booming” crap before the Denver game last year. Shocker he didn’t get cleared. I’m still pissed at him for that. And you said it yourself, took you 3 weeks before you were right. Well we’re on what? Going on 4 weeks here? Sounds like his brain is about as strong as a wet tissue. What a waste of talent.

  • SilverSteel

“We” being that if there is no fans, there is no team. Steeler Nation bro… The team’s burdens are our burdens. That is why we keep wasting time researching and posting to this and other sites – we care about this team. Without our money and attendance – there is no Steelers. Ask any city that lost their team.

  • Jeff Papiernik

What a load of garbage. Yes, there’s no definitive timeline, but the majority of concussions resolve within a month. Anyone over that time frame is atypical and usually has other comorbidities associated with them.

  • StillersInThe6

If we don’t get past KC not having Green will have nothing to do with it. We still have a ridiculous stable of weapons.

  • John Pennington

Draft a tightend this year can’t depend on Green at all cut our losses with Green see if the Steelers can get out of the contract.Paying a guy who don’t play irks me to the core when we are in the playoffs and he is getting paid not helping the team we all should all be so lucky

Sorry, being a fan doesn’t give you warrant to be perpetually insensitive. Concussions are NO joke and have serious long term effects. Yet certain ‘fans’ do not quite understand that, and feel liberated enough show little to no empathy. So part of being a “fan” is showing a little bit of humanity; I figure that if you’re going to burden yourself with their issues, add some humanity as well.

  • Ray Smith

My exact frame of mind with being married and “getting lucky” lol

  • Kevin78

Internet tough guy makes stupid comment. Very surprising.

  • RickM

There’s really nothing apparent on the game tape. There’s maybe one play where you he’s chasing a guy across the field with 3 minutes left and he looks a little tentative in his stride, but he played a few more snaps after that. Maybe something happened off the field. My guess is he’s back fully practicing tomorrow.

  • mokhkw

They also don’t make such ridiculous assessments about head trauma without knowing the patient and the full history. If he is a doctor then things are far worse than I thought.

My guess is he was googling his own name and found a doctor who shares his & decided to run with it.

  • L Garou

Has Green already missed, in one year, more games than Miller missed in his entire career? Yeah, I’m sure Miller never got hammered.. If Green gets concussed with every tackle, what good is he. And please save the compassion and whining. If he can’t take it he shouldn’t be playing and certainly not signing a contract under false pretenses. Period.
Lambert, Ham, Blount, Woodson, etc., etc., etc, aren’t drooling. Neither are the other two Greens, Kevin and Joe. You know, the tough ones. The Steelers..

  • L Garou

    I’ll take that bet!

  • mem359

I am reminded of Sydney Crosby. Out 10 months, 8 games, then out another 3 months. Hopefully Green’s case is not anywhere that bad.

  • lou rock

    Penguins should have dumped him!

  • SilverSteel

Fair enough. I just get tired of people acting like we as fans have nothing invested in the team. Our money buys the stadiums, merchandise, and really pays their salaries. But more than that, we invest our time in the team and our heart. When the team is doing poorly, the whole week is not as fun and when winning , it feels like we all won something.

True, some people can be very insensitive and I think the sticking point with many people including myself is that there is suspicion that (a player to be left unnamed) may have been less than honest with the team when recruited. True, that is on the organization – but it still sux. If you read all of the press going back to the pre season, there was some “interesting” statements made by the player, his agent, and the organization. It did not feel like we were getting even close to the whole truth and it does not take a rocket scientist to start connecting the dots.

This is a big money business, and sometimes the players get taken advantage of and sometimes the organization. If everything was on the level to begin with, I bet far fewer people would be as critical. Peace…

  • C$

I hear you on that……bottom line he’s a bust as far as football goes. I wish him the best in his life after football but he’s dragging the team down!!!!

  • Jeff Burton

I’d say yes, he hasn’t got many sacks but he gets a bunch of pressures. Check that, he has 2.5 sacks in very limited playing time. That’s not bad at all.

  • TMP_22903

I disagree that he’s “not good” … and certainly agree that he’s decent, with the arrow pointing up. We don’t need him to be a starter-quality OLB, not with Deebo and Alvin wrecking opponents.

Chickillo has also forced a fumble on ST (although that may have actually been last year?), and I’m pretty sure he has a fumble recovery this year.

  • TMP_22903

I recall an earlier report (prob. on Steelers Depot?) saying he injured his ankle on the same play he injured is kneee (the facemask play vs. Andy Dalton on the first drive of the game). … ?
