First Offseason Weekend Of 2017: Friday Night Five Questions

Happy Friday once again and welcome to the NFL offseason. Thankfully, we only have two and a half weeks until the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine gets underway in Indianapolis and a month until free agency starts. In the meantime, we plan on keeping you entertained here with several draft profiles in addition to some mock drafts along with countless other articles and news-related posts.

Now is probably a great time to officially and publicly welcome Daniel Valente, Sean McKaveney and Conor O’Leary to the site. They’ve all been contributing for some time now and we hope to have them around for quite a while. All three have been producing some great content thus far.

The start of the offseason for me includes the hated yearly tax preparation and my accountant has already called me a few times needing various things from me. At some point, I’ll need to fly back to Florida for a few days as well to take care of a few personal related matters and I do not look forward to that one bit.

Little Finley Pearl is still not fully potty trained, but she’s getting closer. I still spend several hours a day in the kitchen on a computer that’s set up in there in order to watch her. It really messes up my traditional work flow.

Ok, as usual, I have five new questions for you to answer on this Friday night and I hope you will entertain me by answering each one in the comments below.

By the way, user WeWantDaTruth won the Super Bowl LI prop contest that we ran last week as he correctly guessed 13 of the 20 questions related to the game. I’ll make sure to do that same contest next year.

1 – Do you currently have a draft prospect that you would deem your favorite that you ultimately believe has a good shot at being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers?

2 – There hasn’t been a lot of talk about defensive end Ricardo Mathews since the season end. Being as he’s slated to be an unrestricted free agent, are you hoping he’ll be re-signed by the Steelers in the coming weeks and months?

3 – It’s way too early for this question, but I’ll give it to you anyway. How many tight ends will be drafted in the first two rounds this year?

4 – Should quarterback Landry Jones not re-sign with the Steelers during the offseason, name the team you think he’ll ultimately land with.

5 – It probably won’t happen, but should the New York Jets part ways with Steve McLendon during the offseason, would you like to have him back in Pittsburgh on a one-year contract for the minimum even if it results in him taking the roster spot of Daniel McCullers, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract?

  • Steve

    1. Would like the Steelers to get a high round QB to groom as Ben’s replacement.
    2. Matthews gave little value to the Steelers, for this reason they can let him go.
    3. Three tight ends will be drafted this year in the 1st 2 rounds.
    4. Landry could be picked up by the Buffalo Bills.
    5. Our need as a Nose Tackle position is not that great. So Shade Tree will be sufficient for the amount of snaps. Hargrave can be used and did a fine job in 2016. So I would say no to bringing back McLendon.

  • george

    1. Hassan Reddick. We need an edge rusher and he should be there ato 30.
    2. Yes I think he was better than I thought he would be. 2nd year in the system, great depth player as long as he doesn’t cost too much.
    3. Four
    4. I think he resigned by the steelers. If not maybe Buffalo or Jacksonville.
    5. Yes. I think Big Dan has hit his ceiling and Steve is more versatile.

  • LucasY59

    1. Takk McKinley is my favorite for the 1st pick (which kinda makes him my favorite overall) I tend to geek out over the draft so I already have favorites for each position, and am trying to figure out favorites for each rd/Steelers Draft pick (maybe after the combine it will be easier to figure out the rankings/rd projections, but even then its a guess that can easily be wrong) guys like Jourdan Lewis, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Obi Melifonwu, and Haasan Reddick are a few of my other favorites

    2. I think it would be a really good idea to bring him back on the same deal they had him for last yr, he would at least provide depth through camp, and if Walton and Maxey (or a rookie/FA?) beat him out then the competition was good and they earned it

    3. 3 TEs? other than Njoku and Howard (who could be 1st rdrs, so they are a lock) it is a total guess, there are a few that could sneak into the 2nd like Engram, Hodges and Leggett, but im not sure so I will guess 3

    4. the clowns?, I really dont know what team will want him, so its a total guess

    5. with either Mc the long term doesnt look that good (and with the Steelers neither of them will get many snaps with Hargrave ahead of them) so I would guess that they dont bring him back unless it is really cheap, either way they will most likely get a younger/cheap NT for depth after this yr (2018 draft pick)

  • Phil Brenneman II

    1. Haven’t really dug into anything yet. So on the flipside I will say what I definitely don’t want to see based on popular conversations on the Depot right now and that is any TE or offensive player in the first round or 2.

    2. Not something I have really thought about but I wouldn’t be against it. My main concern is if they like him enough to consistently get Tuitt or Heyward rest. If they don’t trust any of those guys to do that I am against them being on the roster.

    3. Hmmm….I will go with 2.

    4. I kind of wonder if instead of going somwhere to compete as a starter he might not end up somewhere with a young starter already in place where he will be the cemented vet backup. Titans, Bucs etc….Not sure who these teams already have so I may be way off.

    5. No.

  • Chris92021

    1. David Njoku. I thank Ladarius Green for trying but too many head injuries. Njoku can give us a real threat in between the hashmarks.

    2. One year deal. Mathews can help us out for one more season.

    3. In the first round, two. Within the first two rounds? I will say….three (Howard, Njoku, and Engram)

    4. If Jones does not come back, I am not so sure he will get a multi-year offer anywhere. I think this is the only team that will give him a multi-year deal.

    5. Absolutely. I’ve seen enough of McCullers to know he can’t play. McLendon can.

    Enjoy the weekend, y’all.

  • WreckIess

    1. Mckinley has a pretty decent shot. I think he’ll tear it up at the combine, but the last two pass rushers I wanted to drop to where we were picking (Dupree and Spence) ended up making it so I’m holding out hope that he does.

    2. Yeah. Hopefully he and Maxey can battle for a spot.

    3. I’ll go with 4. I think Leggett will sneak into the back end of the 2nd.

    4. San Francisco. They’ll probably promise him a chance to start while whatever rookie they draft learns the offense.

    5. Easily. Someone who can sub in for Grave and not miss a beat would be huge for the defense.

  • RickM

    1. Want an edge rusher. Not sure who will be available at 30.
    2. Fine by me provided it’s vet minimum.
    3. Maybe 3. Howard will be the first taken by Miami at 22 as they only threw 10 times to their TE this year and desperately need an upgrade. Njoku is a given and maybe even to the Giants at 23. Likely either Everett or Engram will go in the latter part of the 2nd, but not sure.
    4. I don’t think there will be much interest in Jones, but if forced to pick another team I’d go with Arians and Leftwich in Arizona.
    5. Steve was decent in the 11 games he played. I doubt the Jets will release him to save $2.2M. But if they do, I’d definitely take him back for less money of course.

  • Dan

1 – Not yet. I’m intrigued by TJ Watt, but that may be due to lineage. There’s also that Melifonwu from UConn, perhaps even Hooker if he falls due to injury (unlikely I know).

    2 – Yeah, he’s solid depth.

    3 – Four.

4 – He may want to prove himself as a starter, so some place like SF or Chicago.

5 – Maybe, for the right price. Big Dan hasn’t really developed much, though we’re not doing much better with McClendon. I could take it or leave it.

  • JohnB

    1. Its too early (for me) for this but i’ll go with the OLB Harris. Whoever it is, it should be OLB.
    2. Yeah Mathews would be solid depth
    3. I’m going to go with three TEs in the first two rds.
    4. I’d say LARams or Buffalo for L. Jones.
    5. Oh yeah. I’m a Mclendon fan. Plus, like Mathews, solid depth.

On potty training I don’t know what method you’re using but I like to have a couple of bells on string I hang on my back door and every time we go outside we ring the bell before we open the door so eventually they ring the door when they want to go out.

  • Jeff McNeill

    1) I like Carl Lawson
    2) no
    3) 2
    4) Houston
    5) no

  • Michael Mosgrove

1 – Do you currently have a draft prospect that you would deem your favorite that you ultimately believe has a good shot at being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers?

tough one. haason reddick, or adam shaheen. possible to get both. would make an impact for both defense and offense.

2 – There hasn’t been a lot of talk about defensive end Ricardo Mathews since the season end. Being as he’s slated to be an unrestricted free agent, are you hoping he’ll be re-signed by the Steelers in the coming weeks and months?

resign him for a 1 year.

3 – It’s way too early for this question, but I’ll give it to you anyway. How many tight ends will be drafted in the first two rounds this year?

    3

4 – Should quarterback Landry Jones not re-sign with the Steelers during the offseason, name the team you think he’ll ultimately land with.

    jacksonville or arizona.

5 – It probably won’t happen, but should the New York Jets part ways with Steve McLendon during the offseason, would you like to have him back in Pittsburgh on a one-year contract for the minimum even if it results in him taking the roster spot of Daniel McCullers, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract?

tough one. no. i want big dan to tear it up. he wasnt used enough this year.

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

    1. No, so hard to gauge who will be available by pick 30.
    2. Like having depth which he will provide.
    3. 0 by the Steelers; maybe 3 total.
    4. Texans
    5. Yes, I think he is better.

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

Phil – you won the 5 questions regular season contest. I do have a nominal prize to send to you.

  • Spencer Krick

    1. Hassan Reddick, I think he can be one hell of a playmaker in the longterm.
    2. Meh, I think Walton and Maxey could be solid backups. I still think that the Steelers will draft another lineman in the 5th-7th rounds.
    3. 3
    4. The jets, their QB core is a disaster.
    5. Hell yes.

  • Brian Tollini

    1. Only watched games of a few edge rushers so far, but Hassan Reddick is my fav so far.
    2. He is depth, it would be nice to have him back but not earth shattering if it doesn’t happen.
    3. I say 3.
    4. I’ll go with Dallas. Perfect place for a Landry.
    5. Yeah, I think McClendon would be my choice. He offers a little more in the pass rush dept.

  • Matt Manzo

1: too early to really have a favorite, but right now I’m loving Reddick and Awuzie!

2: I have no concern about the Matthews situation. If he stays, hes reliable veteran depth. If he goes it opens up a spot for someone new!

3: 4 TEs in the first 2 rounds.

4: I could see Landry ruining his career in SF.

5: I’d rather see Mclendon brought back in Matthews spot! I wouldn’t trade him for Mcullers.

  • William Weaver

Congrats Phil on winning. Well done!

  • Matt Manzo

I hope you post your list of tops at each position soon! I haven’t had as much draft time as usual. I feel way behind!

  • Matt Manzo

    Congrats Phil!!!

  • Matt Manzo

    Top 5, baby!

  • SkoolHouseRoxx

    1. Either Charles Harris, OJ Howard, or Budda Baker.
    2. I like him. Wouldn’t mind him back!
    3. 4 TEs in the first 2 rounds.
    4. He’ll be back in Pittsburgh, but for the sake of the question Minnesota.
    5. Eh shrug. I wouldn’t care either way. I like McLendon but I like Walton, Matthews, and McCullers. Key word “like.” Really no dancing in the streets about any of them.

  • SkoolHouseRoxx

    (TT)

  • Jeff McNeill

    Gratz Phil.

  • The Truth

    1. Ryan Anderson. I don’t think Reddick(ILB) will be there at 30.

    2. One year minimum salary possible.

    3. Zero.

    4. No idea. Rams? 49ers?

    5. Yes, for the right price. Good depth.

  • The Truth

    Huh? Is this comedy?

  • Cam2125

    1. Charles Harris
    2. yes I would like him resigned
    3. 4
    4. No clue
    5. Yes

  • Cam2125

Zero tight ends? Howard could very well go top 10-15.

  • Brian Miller

    1. I have a draft crush on both Joe Mathis and Jordan Leggett, and my ideal draft has them going to us in the 2nd and 3rd round, after we take a stud CB in the 1st!
    2. As long as he is cheap, sure. Insurance never hurts…
    3. I am going with 2, Njoku and Howard.
    4. Arizona, why not?
    5. Yes and yes…if big Dan hasn’t made enough improvement to justify him beating out McClendon then he never will.

  • Spencer Krick

    I have points! Woo!

  • The Truth

Oops, I misread the question. I thought it asked would the Steelers draft a TE in one of the first two rounds.

  • LucasY59

I probably wont until after the combine, will have a better feel for players then, everything right now is just remembering names and seeing who people are talking about, but at this point its so early that rankings and projections are kinda hard to have much accuracy with (so you arent really behind much)

  • LucasY59

dallas will need a backup QB when they get rid of Romo (unless they keep sanchize) jerryworld does make sense

  • Phil Brenneman II

Wonder if this victory will get me free yearly membership for the Depot.

  • Phil Brenneman II

    Thank you.

  • Phil Brenneman II

    Thank you.

  • Phil Brenneman II

    You need my Paypal? Lol.

  • Steve

Had the same problem myself. Had to go back and reread, then change my reply.

  • Jim McCarley

    1. best edge rusher available.
    2. keep anyone that contributes until you get someone better.
    3. 2
    4. I do not think landry would leave to be a backup somewhere else, so he stays in Pittsburgh.
    5. bring back McClendon to compete, then cut whichever one deemed inferior.

  • 1. BPA not sure who yet
    2. If they think they can’t upgrade from him then yes
    3. 3
    4. Wow, ummmm,,,, Chicago, lol idk
    5. I wouldn’t be against it. Wish McCullers would just make it hard to get rid of him though

  • Brian Tollini

And Sanchez is a FA I believe, plus I am sure they’re familiar with him since he played close by in college.

  • Josh Gustad

    1. My answers are amateur at best when it comes to college players and draft prospects. I know people aren’t high on Jabrill because they don’t know where he fits, but Steelers love those kind of players. The guys that can kind of do everything. He has the ability to return kicks which relieves Antonio Brown, and I love the athleticism of Peppers. Dude can ball. I wouldn’t be mad if we took Kizer in round one if available as well. Do what Green bay did with Rodgers.
    2. Mathews had to fill in a lot last year and I thought he played relatively well. I’d sign him on a 1 year deal.
    3. 3-4 TEs.
    4. Arizona. I mentioned that to Alex a couple weeks ago when people were unsure if Carson would return.
    5. I would LOVE getting McClendon at the minimum. Offers way more than McCullers.

  • PaeperCup

    1) I’ve got 3.
Dawuane Smoot DL/OLB. Good combination of size, speed, moves.
TJ Watt OLB. just because I think effort and motor is highly underrated when counting players.
Adam Shaheen TE. Just and intriguing prospect. HUGE, 6’7” 277 lb, but he can flat out run and catch. However small school, not much tape, not much competition, but dominated those he faced.

    2) Yes, DL depth is always a concern, I rather re-sign that have to use a draft pick on DL or find another in FA.

    3) 4-5. TE depth is crazy this year. But I noticed a lot of them are just oversized WR. There is a trend. I hope Steelers get one.

    4) LA Rams…then maybe he’ll get a chance to start.

    5) Nah. I like him, but I love Hargraves, and Mccullers has been good for us. I don’t think financially it’s worth it in reality….but if it’s for dirt cheap, he is an upgrade over Mccullers.

  • PaeperCup

Good season! I look forward to doing this next season. Thanks for doing this Beav

  • John21

    1. Love Tim Williams OLB Alabama if he can stay clean off the field. Favorite underdog Eujan Price – OLB Pitt (Mini Me of #92 or Dummervil) Best name Weston Steelhammer Safety Air Force
    2. Mathews for Vet Minimum – Yes
    3. TE drafted – 3 seems right; someone reaching could make it go to 4
    4. Buffalo – they will not pay Taylor
    5. Yes – old #90 would be an improvement over Big Dan. Thought Mitch could unleash the grizzly inside the teddy bear but I guess not

  • Joe Main

    1. Demarcus Walker
    2. Not really
    3. 4 or 5
    4. Vikings
    5. I guess he could help out
