Fowler: DL Tyson Alualu Visiting Steelers Monday

Defensive linemen Tyson Alualu will visit the Pittsburgh Steelers today, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Alualu, the tenth overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2010 draft, never panned out as hoped for. In his seven year career, all with Jacksonville, he’s recorded 17.5 sacks and forced a pair of fumbles. He’s played in a 4-3 his entire career so he’d have to make a scheme change in Pittsburgh, though I imagine his role wouldn’t be too different. He profiles as a three tech pass rusher, something the team could add behind Cam Heyward, Stephon Tuitt, and Javon Hargrave.

He started ten games in 2016, finishing with 36 tackles and 2.5 sacks. At the Combine back in 2010, he weighed in at 6’2/3 295 pounds.

We’ll update you if he ends up signing with the Steelers later this afternoon.

  • Brian Tollini

I just remember his name being called and everybody saying “whaaaaaat?”

  • Spencer Krick

If the price is right, this could be a very nice signing. Would eliminate the need to address depth in the draft unless the value is too good to pass up on.

  • Anton Smolka

Basically what Mathews was supposed to be. Much needed depth

  • Mechanix

I remember that too. He was graded as a 4th round pick or something like that.

  • T3xassteelers

I like this!! Hope we sign him. Would be great depth and occasional rotation player. could help spell Tuitt and Hayward and that could pay dividends in the end!

  • Daniel

Trash only 2.5 sacks a season

  • TroymanianDevil

I liked what Ricardo Mathews did, I wish he would just be brought back. I can’t imagine his price is high, but who knows, maybe it is and that’s why he hasn’t yet.

If Ricardo is not brought back this guy looks decent

  • Daniel

This guy isn’t going to spell tuitt or heyward

  • stan

Would be nice to have a high-upside addition like that at DE. He has to be an improvement over Matthews, right? Second chance guys like this are how the Patriots keep adding playmakers. If he doesn’t work out, Maxey and Walton are still there for solid depth at DE.

  • steeler_george

I liked what Mathews did last year, maybe they are comparing the two… $ and talent.

  • T3xassteelers

Could* unless he plays more of a NT only

  • Steelers12

    could be nice addition

  • Steelers12

    why wouldn’t he?

  • Steelers12

yes because it seems we need to draft two Corners now and maybe even a safety

  • Spencer Krick

It’d be nice to be able to play some dime.

  • Steelers12

We got to in today’s pass friendly nfl

  • The Sun is Pro-Black

He should but under tomlin he likely won’t

  • Ralph Wagner

lualu, the tenth overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2010 draft, never panned out as hoped for.

Notice the similarity : Jarvis Jones who also never panned out as hoped for.

I guess this is the best Colbert and Tomlin can do.

    Go Steelers

  • steelburg

Your comment completely confuses me! This guy is being looked at as a back up. They aren’t going to use a first round pick or spend a ton of money at a position that has 2 young starters locked in. Hayward, Tuitt, and Hargrave are the 3 primary guys and Walton and along with a vet defensive lineman will be depth.

  • heath miller

seems thats the post are messed up.. not working properly .. anyone else having problems? seems to be ok as of about 125pm

  • heath miller

what is the high-upside .. the guys been in the league 7 years.. i would guess if he had an upside he would have hit it somewhere in the first 7 years? no? i see a backup that maybe we get on the cheap… an improvement over matthews? doubt that … i see it as a nothing pick up .. not good .. not bad… probably just cheap

  • heath miller

yep thats why jax is always jax… they jump on a solid 4th round pick in the first round .. 10th overall pick and hes just a back up… jax will be jax

  • Michael James

I think that’s a good depth signing. He certainly has some talent and he consistently got at least 2-4 sacks every season. We also have to take into consideration that he played for a messed up organization. In Pittsburgh he will have a great DL coach and he can concentrate on his limited snaps and give 100% every time he’s on the field.

  • RickM

Sounds like a good signing. Hope they get him.

  • The Sun is Pro-Black

    Your comment is trash

  • Alex Kozora

    What issue are you having?

  • Andrew

I’d take it. Good depth, pass rushing skills to compliment LT’s run stuffing ability

  • steelburg

This guy definitely doesn’t have upside left at this point. But he is definitely an upgrade over Mathews IMO. His 17.5 career sacks compared to Mathews 5 shows a player that is better at getting after the QB.

  • Petherson Silveira

He would play for us at the same position that he played for Jaguars. He would be a DT at Tec-3 in Nickel package. He played DT at Tec-3 for Jaguars in their base 4-3 package. He fits ours system.

  • Steelers12

i think Tomlin understands his scheme must change

  • The Sun is Pro-Black

    Think so?

  • AndyR34

I had one deleted earlier this AM.

  • Alex Kozora

You mean your comment right? Nothing wrong with the actual article/post, correct?

  • The Tony

    Your username is trash

  • Boots

Disqus was acting up. Wouldn’t load, couldn’t sign in. Seems fixed

  • Boots

I’ll keep saying it, Jared Odrick and Tyson Jackson are both still out there and I believe would be better fits!

  • Steelers12

    he better

  • The Sun is Pro-Black

Lol yea, don’t bet on it

  • Steelers12

i have more faith in Tomlin than most

  • The Sun is Pro-Black

I have faith that he’ll do a lot of things. changing isn’t one of them.

  • popsiclesticks

Might need both. I mean, Johnny Maxey played important snaps last year.

  • Steelers12

    But why?

  • The Sun is Pro-Black

That’s how the steelers are and I’m guessing that’s why they chose him.

  • mokhkw

Highly doubtful that he signs with the Steelers imo.

With the DL non-rotation there would hardly be any snaps left for him. Last season he played over 60%.

  • D.j. Reynolds

I think Aluala would be a rather significant upgrade over Mathews.

  • mokhkw

LIke Alualu I highly doubt either of those will come to the Steelers for less playing time than they would get elsewhere. We’re not an attractive option for any DL with the 2 DL scheme and Heyward/Tuitt taking 90+ % of the snaps.

  • steeltown

This would be a good signing, quality depth with tons of starting experience

  • D.j. Reynolds

I suspect the Steelers are looking for someone to take some of those regular season snaps away to save Heyward/Tuitt for the playoff run. Mathews didn’t, and I expect that is why they would prefer Alualu.

  • AndyR34

Yes…my comment…and it was in Matthew’s post about free agency improvement.

  • capehouse

He’s not gonna sign with us. Not enough cash or playing time. Just draft a guy.

  • Alex Kozora

Got it. Think it’s just getting caught up in the filter. Changed some stuff to combat the spam bots.

  • Jonny Panic

    Redacted

  • AndyR34

I just had another one deleted in Dave’s article on Sensabaugh. I get short ones to go thru, but longer ones seem to get held.

  • George Hareras

I’m amazed by some of these dumb comments people post. I swear if it’s not a high price tag player, people get pissed

  • TroymanianDevil

Fair enough. Haven’t watched Aluala. But that’d be very welcomed then b/c like I said Mathews was solid in his rotational spot so I at least want to maintain that standard. No more Cam Thomas signings

  • TroymanianDevil

Very likely what it comes down to .. $$$ talks

  • Nwall2

I would Ike a d-line of Heyward, Hargrave, Tuitt with Walton, McCullers and Walton as backups. Does anyone know if Ricardo Matthews was a one or two year deal last offseason?

  • RickM

Darn, he’s the guy I wanted to sign most today. No signing likely means it didn’t work. But, what guys say about his lack of likely snaps here is probably accurate. He can probably so better elsewhere.

  • steelburg

I agree. Everybody can’t be starters that should be obvious.

  • Spencer Krick

Google says discarded matter is trash.

  • mokhkw

Until the Steelers actually show that they will rotate DL players they’re going to have a really hard time signing any backups of note. We’re only attractive to lazy f**kers like Cam Thomas who are content to sit on the bench and get paid.

Matthews, until injuries hit, was never going to get a chance to play. I think he is a good backup but if they’re not going to be used it won’t matter.

  • heath miller

yes alex the article is greatttttttttttttttt as always .. i mean that i was not able to post a comment earlier today … it said please try later for about 10 minutes then it was fine.. thanks for the articles and the fast reply …

  • heath miller

disqus was down for a while earlier i think .. thanks alex

  • LucasY59

Mathews was one yr, he is a FA now

  • LucasY59

I agree they have to be less stubborn and allow some other players to get on the field it might be a short term downgrade (since the Starters are so talented) but a long term positive (keeps those talented players available and able to perform well later in games and the season)

  • LucasY59

there have been quite a few spam posts lately, easy to ignore (and I report all the ones I see) but could see them being a problem if they became even more common, there have been some funny replies to them as well (so at least most that get a spam reply have a sense of humor with them)

  • LucasY59

and then they picked a punter early as well

“just when you couldnt do anything STUPIDER you go and TOTALLY redeem yourself!”

  • Alex Kozora

It usually isn’t about the length of the comment but any words or phrases that might be picked up by the spam. Sometimes, innocuous stuff and unintentional things get flagged. I’ll keep a close eye on the pending comments to make sure they’re getting sent through for you guys.

  • Alex Kozora

Ha yeah, not a huge deal, but certainly not something we want visible on the site.

  • Conserv_58

McCullers has done nothing to justify he deserves that kind of consideration.
