Audio: Breaking Down The Steelers Initial 53 Man Roster

Wanted to throw down my quick thoughts on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ initial 53 man roster. Run through each position group and give my opinion on the group and decisions the team made. We also run through the practice squad additions as well.

As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. If you have any issue with audio, give me the heads up too.

Alex great job this offseason – you Da Man. Thanks to all the Depot Staff- Dave and Matt, and Josh and Beav and any one else I left out. This was a pretty cool and unusual offseason and training camp, most exciting i can ever rember.

  • Dorian James

This is off topic and I guess I should have waited for you guys to post this but why would they re-sign Stephen Johnson, after putting cam Sutton on injured reserve didn’t they need that spot for the safety??

  • Dorian James

Yeah, this site is my best and favorite source of Steelers information

  • nutty32

    someone was “banging the table.”

  • Shannon Stephenson

Do not know if I can add to much as my thoughts are similar. I am most upset at the lose of Ayers and find it odd that we did not keep a blocking TE on the 53…maybe the Steelers have something in mind as a alternate. Allen only made the roster because of the injury to Sutton IMO. I do feel overall that the Steelers made great moves and puts us right where we need to be as a Super Bowl contender.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Seems like Danny would always be banging something.

Alex, you’ve very efficiently covered all aspects of the Steelers this offseason, in relation to comparison to different players/ positions, etc. except maybe one. Is there any chance you doing a comparison of our overall/ position coaching staff in relation to the NFL overall- like how do you rate w/ our HC, STs, WR, QB, OC, etc. to the other coaches in the League? Or would that be too dicey?

  • Alex Kozora

Thanks Jaybird! Thanks to all of you for hanging with us. Lot of fun.

  • Alex Kozora

Maybe they didn’t find anyone worth that spot. Maybe they’re comfortable with the group. I dunno.

  • Alex Kozora

It’s a good idea Craig but to be honest, I get a lot less exposure to other teams/coaches. So it’s hard for me to compare other teams because I’m not as comfortable with their roster, how their guys are playing etc.

Good recap on everything Alex. Got a couple of things to run by you if you have the time.

    1. My man MK Reynolds is probably the president of the Daniel McCullers fan club. He insists he is eating up double teams and getting good push when he is in the game. Full disclosure, I haven’t paid a ton of attention to Big Dan this offseason. Does MK have a point and you all are being a bit too hard on him or is MK missing the point?

    2. How much do you think the potential of Brian Allen being sniped played into the decision to move Cockrell and keep him? I know conventional wisdom says sniping doesn’t happen too often but he does have crazy measurables and did have a good preseason. I tend to lean towards players not being snagged but I was in a debate with someone who was pretty sure Allen would have been in danger.

I still lean towards the idea that it is weird to move Cockrell when they seem to be making “win now” moves if you will. If the idea is to win now, you move Allen to the PS and keep Cockrell as a solid backup even if his ST play is limited. So with that in mind, I think I may actually be buying into the idea that they were really worried about losing Allen.

I’m curious is Golson was offered PS and turned it down. I’d think it’s a no lose prop for Steelers. Get a look at him on the PS and if an injury happens he’s the first up.

Would the steelers take a safety first in 18# draft? The way the roster looks now?

  • Alex Kozora

Maybe McCullers is secretly Irish? That’s about the only way I understand Michael’s fandom, lol.

I’m sure the truth is somewhere inbetween. And while the Steelers top 5 DL is really good, good as it’s ever been really, the 6th spot was weak after Maxey fell out of favor. I just see the same Dan McCullers and thought it was time to move on.

I don’t know if him being sniped was the concern. Allen just fits the mold better. He’s got the size, speed, length. Cockrell isn’t a press-man guy. And you look at special teams ability, Allen is a big winner there. That’s why Cockrell is gone. His role was so niche. Can’t be a #1 corner, can’t be a backup. He’s the #2 or bust.

  • Alex Kozora

I have no idea but I doubt that’s the case.

  • Phil Brenneman II

Good reasoning on Cockrell but despite that, I still can’t help but feeling like he is a better “win now” option over Allen if you could feel safe keeping Allen on the PS. I mean, we watched Ross have success last year as a starting corner so even if he is limited you would think he would be a good backup to have around.

I keep saying, I am not mad at the move or anything, just feels like the move clashes a little with the other moves. Bring in Haden to upgrade and then bump Cockrell back while keeping Allen on the PS to develop.

  • Alan Tman

Alex you would rather give (talent) Ayers to NE to replace Edelman than cut Feiler?

  • Jeremy Barbati

A weary Alex is still a good Alex. Really appreciate all the work. Not as thankless work as a basement blogger might be

  • Craig M

Thank you for responding, and keep up the excellent work- lifeline to the Steelers.

  • Alex Kozora

I thought Feiler’s play deserved it. I would cut McCullers for Ayers, if you’re making me rework the roster.

  • Alan Tman

I would put Ayers on the 53 right now, by cutting one of them. Probably the 9th Offensive lineman as opposed to the 6th Defensive lineman. I wouldn’t give the evil empire a replacement part for Edelman. You guys are doing a fabulous job. Especially you and Matthew. Keep up the good work.
