A tale of two Ryans

Steelers fans know who Ryan Clark is.  He’s usually the tandem safety with Troy Polamalu.  Clark has set himself apart this year by leading the team in tackles with 100 combined (71 total, 29 assisted).  Due to a sickle cell condition, Clark will not be able to play against the Broncos at Mile High Stadium on Sunday due to the altitude.  Head Coach Mike Tomlin discussed Clark’s condition with the team’s medical staff and made the final decision that another Ryan (Mundy) would play in Clark’s spot.  Clark said that he and his family would have prayed about it before-hand, but that he respected Read more [...]

William Gay To Start Again At Left Cornerback Against Colts

Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden will not start at left cornerback Sunday night against the Indianapolis Colts as Ed Bouchette reports that defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau stated today that he would stick with the same secondary he used against Seahawks this past week. That means that William Gay will make a second straight start outside and Keenan Lewis will come off the bench to play outside when the Steelers play the nickel. Gay would then slide inside to his accustomed nickel corner spot in those situations. McFadden has been slowed all preseason with his hamstring injury that forced Read more [...]

Steelers Ravens Week 1 Defensive Participation Chart

Below is the defensive participation chart for the Steelers week 1 game versus the Baltimore Ravens this past Sunday. The only real noticeable things in week 1 of course is the playing time that Larry Foote received in place of James Farrior. Foote was on the field for 22 of 61 non-penalty defensive plays. Jason Worilds also spelled James Harrison for a few plays and mostly at the end of the game after Harrison injured his knee. Rookie defensive end Cameron Heyward saw just 5 snaps, while Ziggy Hood saw just 10 snaps. I suspect both will get more playing time in week 2. Click on the image Read more [...]

Steelers Panthers Preseason Game 4 Defensive Participation Chart & Personnel

Below is the defensive participation chart for the Steelers fourth and final preseason game Thursday night versus the Panthers. The final preseason game is usually used to look at the bottom end of the roster and this game was no different for the Steelers as they rested several veteran starters like Aaron Smith, James Harrison, James Farrior and Troy Polamalu. Injured cornerback Ike Taylor sat out again as did Bryant McFadden. Jason Worilds saw extensive work at both right and left outside linebacker spots as he logged a team high 59 plays on defense. Mortty Ivy saw 47 snaps and Ryan Munday played Read more [...]

Steelers Panthers Preseason Game 4 Offensive Participation Chart & Personnel

Below are the offensive personnel packages, play counts and participation chart for the Steelers fourth and final preseason game Thursday night versus the Panthers. The fourth game is usually used to take a long look at the bottom end of the roster to gives players one last shot to make the roster. The starters only saw limited action and several veteran starters sat out all together. Nothing stuck out as far as the rotation went, but the most noticeable thing was the amount of plays that Emmanuel Sanders played. 26 plays is proof positive his feet have healed and he looked good while on the field. Steelers Falcons Preseason Game 3 Defensive Participation Chart & Personnel

Below is the defensive participation chart for the Steelers third preseason game Saturday night versus the Falcons. Like the offensive chart this week, nothing sticks out as far as the rotation into the game. The starters, as expected, saw a great deal of work as the starting linebackers and safeties topped out at 60 plays. Chris Carter is missing from this list as he injured his hamstring early on special teams. Crezdon Butler led the way with 75 well needed plays on defense. Steelers Falcons Preseason Game 3 Offensive Participation Chart & Personnel

Below are the offensive personnel packages, play counts and participation chart for the Steelers third preseason game Saturday night versus the Falcons. The third game is usually used as a dress rehearsal of sorts so it is no surprise that the starting unit received 27 plays of work. The order of the substitutions used after the starters exited also included no surprises. The only thing really to note, albeit not a surprise, was the fact that rookie Marcus Gilbert received a few snaps at right tackle after his night was done on the left side. Personnel package wise the Steelers used 5 wide receivers Read more [...]

Steelers Eagles Preseason Game 2 Offensive Participation Chart & Personnel

Below are the offensive personnel packages, play counts and participation chart for the Steelers second preseason game Thursday night versus the Eagles. Not too many things stick out as far as play counts go. Tony Hills and Jonathan Dwyer received extended playing time as expected. Personnel package wise the Steelers added the 13 package this week with the use of one running back and three tight ends as well as the 20 and 22 personnel package that uses two running backs on the field. Seven Players That I Think Are Battling For Last Four Roster Spots

Offensive lineman Tony Hills has thrown a wrench into where I am at with my 53 man roster projection. I released version 2.0 on Sunday and feel I am pretty close as far as nailing it down once again. It is not uncommon to be a few players off after just one preseason game and I feel that is exactly where I am at right now. The 50th, 51st, 52nd and 53rd players are the toughest ones to figure out right now and baring another signing or unexpected injury, I feel 49 of the 53 roster spots are pretty much sewn up at this point. I firmly believe after the Monday & Tuesday practice this week that Read more [...]

Steelers Redskins Preseason Game 1 Defensive Participation Chart & Personnel

Below is the defensive participation chart for the Steelers first preseason game Friday night versus the Redskins. Not much sticks out as far as a first preseason games go. Aaron Smith started over Ziggy Hood as expected and he saw more snaps than what I figured he would. Chris Carter spelled Jason Worilds at right outside linebacker while Worilds was getting coached up on the sidelines. I doubt Carter was scheduled to enter the game so soon. Ryan Mundy and Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith saw extensive action due to the shortage of safeties and the same went for cornerbacks Keenan Lewis and Donovan Warren Read more [...]

Steelers Redskins Preseason Game 1 Offensive Participation Chart & Personnel

Below are the offensive personnel packages, play counts and participation chart for the Steelers first preseason game Friday night versus the Redskins. Not much sticks out as far as a first preseason games go. The most noticeable thing would be the amount of snaps that Chris Scott played. In addition, Jonathan Dwyer clearly has the lead for the 4th running back spot right now based on the amount of snaps he received. The thing to watch is if John Clay gets more reps than Dwyer next week. I doubt he will. Arnaz Battle and Tyler Grishan are clearly in a battle for the 6th receiver spot, should the Read more [...]

Playing With The Moving Offensive Line Variables Post Starks

The news late Wednesday that Steelers left tackle Max Starks would be released on Friday came as a pretty big surprise and it threw a bit of uncertainty into how the Steelers 2011 offensive line will look. We have only scratched the surface of the free agent period and today will bring several more cuts around the league and perhaps a few by the Steelers. In addition, there likely will be a few signings included in the transactions. Right now there are so many fluctuating variables with the Steelers offensive line that all we can do is speculate on those moving variables and that is exactly Read more [...]

Chris Scott – The Forgotten 2010 Draft Pick

A little over a year ago the Steelers drafted Tennessee tackle Chris Scott in the 5th round of the 2010 NFL Draft with hopes he could provide some depth at both the tackle and the guard position. Offensive line coach Sean Kugler said immediately after the selection that Scott is a physical player that has some position flexibility at both the tackle and guard position. Kugler noted that Scott, who was primarily a left tackle at Tennessee, could also play on the right side as well. The position flexibility that Kugler mentions stems from the fact that Scott broke into the Volunteers lineup at the Read more [...]

Post Draft Looks Good For The Return Of Chris Hoke To The Steelers

Everyone knew the Steelers would be addressing the defensive line during the draft, but the only question was to what degree they would do so. Prior to the draft defensive end was the most apparent need with nose tackle being a distant second along the defensive front. While it would have come to no surprise if the Steelers would have drafted a young nose tackle to groom behind Casey Hampton, they didn’t. Hampton signed a new three-year contract last February and his play in 2010 was well above the line. He logged just over 500 snaps on defensive last season including the playoffs and only Read more [...]
