The questions are rolling in about the Pittsburgh Steelers 2012 free agents so I threw together a quick rundown of the restricted, unrestricted and exclusive rights free agents as the Steelers head into the offseason. The 6 restricted free agents will all certainly be tendered with only Mike Wallace receiving a first round tender. The other 5 will receive the lowest one year tenders. These amounts have not yet been released and I will post those amounts later in the offseason when they are made known. Both exclusive right free agents have no choice but to accept their tender offers and they can't

Well it did not take long for the Steelers to make a decision on injured right tackle Willie Colon today as he was placed on injured reserve this afternoon following his morning triceps surgery and free agent tackle Jamon Meredith was signed to the 53 man roster to take his place. Meredith, who is 6 foot 5, 312 lbs, played under Steelers offensive line coach Sean Kugler when both were with the Bills.
The Steelers also had worked out formers Seahawks tackle Ray Willis on Tuesday, but opted to sign Meredith instead. Meredith only has 4 career starts to his credit in the last 2 seasons after he

Mike Tomlin said during his Tuesday press conference that the Steelers would work out a few tackles today and Scott Brown now reports via Twitter that Ray Willis and Jamon Meredith are being worked out today.
Willis was selected by the Seahawks in the 4th round of the 2005 NFL Draft and played his college ball at Florida State. He started 26 games for the Seahawks at both right guard and right tackle over 5 seasons. He measures in at around 6 foot 6 and just over 300 lbs. He signed with the Dolphins after the lockout ended, but was released before the season started.
Meredith was drafted

The Steelers proved cash flow and the salary cap was not an obstacle this season and they managed to lock up several key components of their defense during the 2011 offseason as well as succesfully locking up their right tackle spot for several years to come. While the list of players that needed to be re-signed or extended was long and daunting this past offseason, it looks to be short and less intimidating next offseason.
I listed the Steelers 2012 free agents the other night and with Troy Polamalu now being scratched off the list today, it leaves wide receiver Mike Wallace as the highest

To finish up some housekeeping before the Steelers 2011 season gets underway, here is the list of Steelers players that will be free agents and whether or not they are restricted, unrestricted or exclusive rights free agents. All of these players are in the final year under contract in 2011. Exclusive free agents must accept the minimum tendered them, so that means Isaac Redman and Steve McLendon are almost certain to return if wanted. Mike Wallace will likely be given the highest tender possibly, while David Johnson, Doug Legursky, Ramon Foster, Keenan Lewis and Ryan Mundy tenders will depend

Steelers Digest is reporting that the Steelers have signed Trai Essex today and have released lineman Nevin McCaskill to make room on the 90 man roster. Essex was the opening day right guard last year for the Steelers, but ended up losing the job after he returned from an early season ankle injury.
Following the 2010 season he was an unrestricted free agent and did not appear to receive any interest from any other teams since the lockout ended. Essex did play guard and tackle for the Steelers over the course of the 2010 season and he will likely serve as a swing man once again should he make
