The 2013 NFL draft is finally here and this morning I will share the five things that will surprise me over the course of the next several days, not only with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the draft as a whole. 1. I have beat this horse to death and I will beat it one last time. The last time that two "true" guards were drafted within the first 16 picks of the first round was 30 years ago. I will admit, if ever there was a year that the trend could be broken, this would be the year, but it will still surprise me nonetheless. Should this indeed wind up happening it will really show how weak that Read more [...]
Former Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson, who was with the Pittsburgh Steelers throughout the preseason last year, was signed by Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday. Johnson appeared in three pre season games for the Steelers last year and was 14-of-21 passing for 236 yards with two touchdowns in very limited playing time. He was also sacked five times and ran for 36 yards on seven attempts. The Steelers chose to keep veteran Charlie Batch as their third quarterback over Johnson, who went on to play for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL after failing to be signed by another team following Read more [...]
The 2013 NFL draft will get underway in New York City Thursday evening, so it is now time for my final Pittsburgh Steelers mock draft of the year. Mock drafts are never satisfying to me as the odds of getting all of the picks correct really doesn't exist. The process, however, is satisfying, as I get a chance to watch a lot of tape and read a ton of material on several of the draft hopeful players. You will notice at the bottom of every selection there are nine additional players listed that I considered in each and every round. In round six, however, I duplicated the nine as both picks existed Read more [...]
All throughout the offseason I speculated that if linebacker James Harrison wanted to remain a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers that he would have to take $3 million in 2013. As it turns out, that is exactly the amount that he stands to pocket with the Cincinnati Bengals this upcoming season if he plays in all 16 games for them. Following the March release of the former Defensive Player of the Year, reports surfaced stating that the Steelers offered Harrison a 30 percent cut of his $6.57 million salary that he was scheduled to earn to remain in Pittsburgh. If indeed that was the case, Harrison Read more [...]
The details of the contract signed by former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison with the Cincinnati Bengals are in and the two-year deal maxes out at $4.45 million and included a $1.2 million signing bonus. The former Defensive Player of the Year will earn base salaries in 2013 and 2014 of $1.4 million and $1.1 million respectively and the deal also includes roster bonuses of $300,000 in the first year and $250,000 in year two, per an agent. Part of those bonuses are believed to be based on games played, so some of it is likely to be deemed NLTBE. In addition to roster bonuses, Read more [...]
By Chris DiMarino The 2013 NFL draft is so close that it's time for me to reveal my final mock draft. Keep in mind that this is educated guessing at best and use it for objective rather than just subjective analysis. I will do my best to address other players that I didn't pick that relate to each round or position as I can. For any that I leave out, that you are impressed with, let me know in the comment section and we'll see on draft day. I'll do my best to address as many of the comments as I can but for those of you who don't take the time to read the full article, don't expect me to take Read more [...]
Former Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison is now officially a member of the Cincinnati Bengals as of Tuesday and he talked to the media via conference call earlier today. Harrison, who spent nine seasons in Pittsburgh, admits he doesn't quite know yet how to feel about the change. "I wouldn't say it feels strange," Harrison said. "I guess when that time comes, I'll have a better understanding or feeling of exactly what it will be then. I'm just happy to be able to continue playing." Following his March release, several speculated that the former Defensive Player of the Read more [...]
Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones is already in New York for the 2013 NFL draft that will begin Thursday night and predicted that he wouldn't get past the Pittsburgh Steelers in round one should he even fall that far. Jones, who was partaking in some sort of promotion for Subway Tuesday morning, that included a bust of him made out chicken salad being unveiled, told Ian Rapoport on the NFL Network, " "If I even get to 17, I don’t think I get past the Steelers." https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/326727572702494720 https://twitter.com/MikeGarafolo/status/326715241960456192 The Read more [...]
Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was a guest Tuesday morning on 105 The X Radio and clarified his reasoning as to why the organization is more open to trading down in the first round of the NFL draft than up. His answer was not surprising, but it no way signified that they are guaranteed to move down on Thursday. "The first thing that you got to do is to look at our own team, and we had significant numbers of departures," said Colbert. "So, the only way that we can realistically replenish those departures is through the draft. There may still be some free agent signings, talking Read more [...]
Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert has been linked to the Pitttsburgh Steelers in several mock drafts this offseason as a possible first round selection. While it doesnt appaear that Eifert has made a pre draft visit to Pittsburgh, we will still pass on the draft profile that our scout buddy Dave-Te Thomas sent to us on him. In case you missed it, my podcast co-host David Todd had the Greg Cosell on his ESPN 970 radio show on Monday. It is a very good interview as Cosell talks linebackers, wide receivers, safeties and much, much more related to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the upcoming draft. In addition to the interview, Cosell also released his first round mock draft on Monday and has the Steelers taking Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner, which is a bit unusual. If you also have not seen them already, Cosell also has a series of draft positional videos up on the official website of the Philadelphia Eagles. These are Read more [...]
During his annual pre draft press conference on Monday, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was asked if he had ruled out tackle Max Starks and nose tackle Casey Hampton possibly returning this season. "No, we haven't shut the door on anybody, quite honestly, that was with us last year, because we don't know what we're going to come out of the weekend with," said Colbert. "There may be some signees from that group of players, and again, it depends on how we fare out this weekend. I think that they would prefer to wait as well, because they could sign a contract and end up behind Read more [...]
Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin held their annual pre draft press conference on Monday, and during the question and answer session, Tomlin was asked if Mike Adams was in the plans to be the starting left tackle this year. "Yeah, but Marcus Gilbert is left tackle capable as well," said Tomlin. "I think that one of the things that we've learned through the trials of the 2012 season, is both of those young men are capable of playing both spots and we'll use the spring and the summer to sort out where we'll play those two at. But, both guys have shown Read more [...]
Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin met the media on Monday to talk about the upcoming draft. Early on in the press conference, here is what Colbert had to say about the pool of players they are looking at. "The draft, as always, as it shaped up, we think that we're in real good shape," said Colbert "We're picking 17th and we'll be picking from a pool of 150 guys that we've identified. Realistically, I think there's probably, in this group, there's probably six to eight guys that we think are special players. Beyond that, there's a nice group of potential Read more [...]
Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin met the media for their annual pre draft press conference and below is the audio in case you missed it. I will be adding the key talking points covered during their talk after I go back through the audio, so make sure to check back throughout the day. Colbert opens by saying that they weren't good enough last year as their 8-8 indicated. The talent that they assembled was an 8-8 team. Colbert recapped all of the offseason moves and said that they are happy they retained restricted free agents wide receiver Emmanuel Read more [...]
Season 3, Episode 95 of The Terrible Podcast is up and co-host David Todd and I start off discussing the extension given to Pittsburgh Steelers nose tackle Steve McLendon following his visit with the Green Bay Packers. We also look back at the way the team handled all of their restricted free agents this offseason. James Harrison has now signed with the Cincinnati Bengals so we give our thoughts on that and also talk about the New York Jets trading cornerback Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday in addition. Was it a good move for both teams? Mike Mayock has now released Read more [...]
Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall has taken to the Huffington Post via a blog post to share his happiness of being in Arizona. The Steelers former first-round draft pick, who signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals early in the free-agent signing period, claims that, while only being settled in his new Arizona home for a short time now, that it has been "beautifully quaint, humbling, and simply joyful." Mendenhall, who was a bit of a head case during his five years in Pittsburgh, also writes that he enjoys the beautiful weather, the warm people and the local Read more [...]
Quite a few in the fanbase were hoping that the Pittsburgh Steelers would sign inside linebacker Rolando McClain after he was waived from the Oakland Raiders earlier this month. I insisted, that despite head coach Mike Tomlin once having high praise for the Alabama product, that the Steelers weren't likely to touch him, regardless of the price. McClain, who I pointed out has had several run-ins with the police since being drafted in the first round of the 2010 draft, has now been arrested once again. Nick Banaszak, of WHNT TV reports Sunday evening that McClain was arrested  Sunday in his hometown Read more [...]
