Leftwich and Moore Offer Great Security and depth

Two of the biggest Steeler free agent signings in the off season were quarterback Byron Leftwich and Mewelde Moore. The injury to backup quarterback Charlie Batch in the preseason was a blessing of sorts. Now I respect Batch, but Leftwich has a better arm and better mobility. It is very hard for a starting quarterback to make it through a full season without missing a snap, Leftwich has confidence and mastery of the offense when entering a game. Leftwich in 4 game appearances is 14 for 24 passing for 223 yards. He has thrown 2 touchdowns and more importantly 0 interceptions. Leftwich has 117.2 Read more [...]

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin had a brief press conference following the 23-6 win over the Washington Redskins. Tomlin said more will be known about starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Tuesday. Tomlin stated that Roethlisberger could have returned to the game if needed, but Tomlin felt it was best to keep him on the sideline with his injured right shoulder. Tomlin said it was great having Willie Parker back at running back and thought he looked good. Tomlin will update all the injuries, including tight end Heath Miller, during his normal Tuesday press conference.

Steelers Defense Skins Washington 23-6

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Washington Redskins 23-6 behind the strong play of the defensive unit. The Steelers defense held the Redskins to 229 total yards and sacked Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell 7 times and intercepted him twice. The interceptions were Campbell's first of the season. The Steeler defense was put into a few tough spots, starting with the surprise opening on sides kickoff and an early Ben Roethlisberger interception on the Steelers opening offensive possession. The defense held the Redskins to just two field goals and no first downs on those early Redskin possessions. Backup Read more [...]

Retkofsky originally had been waived in June of this year. The Steelers also signed punter Ricky Schmitt to the practice squad on Tuesday just in case punter Mitch Berger does not respond to treatment on his hamstring.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media a little while ago from the Steelers South Side practice facilty. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes met with Tomlin on Monday and is back with the team and will practice and should play this week baring any suspension from the league. Running back Willie Parker worked out today and Tomlin described his status as day-to-day. Safety Ryan Clark will be doubtful this week with a shoulder separation. Linebacker Keyaron Fox is still recovering from a hamstring injury and his status is undecided. Nose tackle Casey Hampton is day-to-day with turf toe, but Read more [...]

The Steelers will bring in Jared Retkofsky for a workout Tuesday as they begin looking to replace injured long snapper Greg Warren, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s 21-14 loss to the New York Giants. Retkofsky has been on the Steelers’ preseason roster each of the past two seasons.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said in his post game press conference that long snapper Greg Warren tore his left ACL and will be lost for the season. The Steelers will bring in available long snappers next week for a look. Safety Ryan Clark dislocated his right shoulder and his status for next week is uncertain. Punter Mitch Berger injured his hamstring on his plant leg and he will be reevaluated on Monday. Tomlin said he will visit with wide receiver Santonio Holmes on Monday and his playing status for next week is uncertain at this time.

The Pittsburgh Steelers managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory Sunday against the Giants, losing 21-14. The Steelers defense played well, despite losing safety Ryan Clark to injury late in the game. The defense only gave up one touchdown and four John Carney field goals. The Steeler offense only managed a few big plays and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger once again was pressured and sacked too many times. The Steelers were only 1 for 10 on third downs and turned the ball over four times on offense. Running back Mewelde Moore rushed for 84 yards on 19 carries and was the lone bright spot Read more [...]

Steelers Week 8 Friday Practice Injury Report

The Steelers had four starters not at practice on Friday. RB Willie Parker (knee), T Marvel Smith (back), DE Aaron Smith (not injury related) and WR Santonio Holmes (not injury related). Holmes, practiced Wednesday and Thursday, but is absent today after being charged with possession of marijuana Thursday afternoon in Pittsburgh. Marvel Smith missed practice all week and isn't expected to play Sunday against the New York Giants. Aaron Smith has missed practice all week because of personal reasons. His status for Sunday's game is still undecided. The official injury report will be out shortly.

Steelers RB Willie Parker may not play on Sunday against the New York Giants. Parker, who hasn’t suited up since injuring his left knee in the loss to Philadelphia, was very limited at what he could do at practice on Thursday. It appears more and more likely that RB Mewelde More will make his third straight start at running back for the Steelers. After practice the Thursday practice session, Parker refused to speak to reporters. Parker did practice Wednesday, but apparently suffered another setback because he hardly practiced Thursday. Parker is likely to be held out of practice today.
