The Pittsburgh Steelers made a surprise move today as steelers.com reports that they have decided to release second-year tight end Weslye Saunders.
Saunders returned to the team on Monday after serving his four gamer suspension for testing positive for a banned substance. It was believed by many that veteran Leonard Pope would be the odd man out as his playing time has decreased the last two weeks.
Saunders was signed as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina last season and he recorded four receptions and one touchdown as a rookie.
The Steelers had to make a roster move by 4:00

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially announced on Friday the signing of free agent cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke and placed rookie right guard David DeCastro on the injured reserve list as the designated player to return after 8 weeks.
DeCastro injured his right knee in the Steelers preseason game against the Buffalo Bills and has since had surgery. The new injured reserve rule allows for one player to be designated for return 8 weeks after being placed on the list. DeCastro can begin practicing with the team in 6 weeks time, but once that takes place, the Steelers have 21 days in which to put

PFT is reporting via Twitter Thursday evening that the Pittsburgh Steelers will be signing cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke, who was waived by the Oakland Raiders just a few days ago.

Van Dyke was originally drafted by the Raider in the 3rd round of the 2011 NFL Draft after playing his college football at the University of Miami. At the 2011 NFL combine Van Dyke reportedly ran a 4.28 40-yard dash, which tied him for the third-best ever.
The speedy corneback struggled during the preseason and he was beaten twice on deep passes in

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced their eight man practice squad on Saturday and it included several names that we expected to be on it. Signed today were guard Ryan Lee, linebacker Marshall McFadden, cornerback Josh Victorian, safety Damon Cromartie-Smith, wide receiver David Gilreath, wide receiver Toney Clemons tight end Jamie McCoy and guard John Malecki.
Lee had a great preseason at left guard albeit late in the games that he played in. McFadden also looked like he showed some promise late in games and with the Steelers currently thin depth wise at the position, he earned the spot on the

Besides activating linebackers James Harrison and Jason Worilds from the Active PUP list on Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers also waived running back Jason Ford, who was signed just prior to the second preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts. Ford carried 8 times for 42 yards in that game, but also apparently suffered a hamstring injury that forced him to be unable to play this past Saturday against the Buffalo Bills.
With wide receiver Mike Wallace signing his tender on Tuesday, the Steelers had to make a corresponding move, so Ford was more than likely waived injured with some sort of

The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached an injury settlement with running back John Clay and he has been released according to Ed Bouchette on Twitter.
Clay, who was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin last year, suffered a torn quad a week ago this past Sunday. Clay had been waived injured originally and placed on injured reserve according to reports.
Clay spent the better part of his rookie season on the Steelers practice squad. He was promoted to the 53 man roster late in the season and saw his first action against the St. Louis Rams in week 16. On his first NFL

Another day and another player waived injured as the Pittsburgh Steelers have waived injured running back John Clay and signed former Illinois running back Jason Ford to the 90 man roster to take his place, according to Bob Labriola on Twitter.
Jim Wexell reported earlier on Tuesday that Clay, who was carted off injured during practice on Sunday, was fearful that he tore his quad and now that indeed seems to be the case. Clay will be placed on injured reserve once he clears waivers.
Ford, who measured in at his pro day at 5103, 251 pounds, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a roster move on Friday as cornerback Terry Carter was placed on the waived/injured list presumably because of a hamstring injury that he suffered early in the week. To take his place on the 90 man roster the Steelers signed free agent cornerback Josh Victorian out of Louisiana Tech.
Victorian, who reportedly measured in at 5-10, 190-pounds, went to training camp last year with Baltimore Ravens after signing as an undrafted rookie free agent. Following his release, Victorian spent time on the practice squad of the New England Patriots. He was with the New Orleans

Some surprising news on Friday as it has been announced that the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed wide receiver Antonio Brown to a five-year, $42.5 million contract extension.
Brown was entering the final year of his rookie contract and would have been a restricted free agent following the 2012 season. Brown busted onto the scene in 2011 by registering 69 catches for 1,108 yards. The team MVP also added 737 yards on 27 kickoff returns and another 325 yards on 30 punt returns.
Brown was drafted by the Steelers as their second of two selections in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL draft out of

Not only did the Pittsburgh Steelers sign first round pick David DeCastro on Monday, but they also signed free agent offensive lineman Bridger Buche out of Eastern Michigan to the roster as well.
Buche measured in at 6033 at his pro day back in March and weighed 305 pounds. He did 20 reps on the bench and ran the 40 in a reported 5.43 seconds to go along with a reported 4.78 short shuttle time.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released tackle Jonathan Scott today in a move that has long been anticipated. Scott spent the past two seasons with the Steelers and started 14 of 28 regular-season games and three of four postseason contests.
The Steelers will save $2.2 million in salary cap space by releasing Scott and that money will most definitely be needed if the Steelers are to work out a long-term deal with restricted free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace.
Scott became expendable when the Steelers signed veteran Max Starks back to the roster on Tuesday. Starks had been recovering from

Now we know why the Pittsburgh Steelers signed former LSU linebacker Ryan Baker today as Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports via Twitter that the Steelers have waived former University of Pittsburgh linebacker Brandon Lindsey. This means that the roster remains at 89 players right now following the release of Troy Smith earlier this week.
Lindsey was signed as an undrafted free agent following the draft and he took part in all of the Steelers OTA sessions and mini-camp practices where he lined up for the most part as the second-team right outside linebacker with both James Harrison

Last week I speculated that the Pittsburgh Steelers would likely be releasing one of their five quarterbacks soon and Monday we got word that former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith has been released.
The move now means that the Steelers have decided to take Jerrod Johnson to training camp with them as their fourth quarterback. Carrying five quarterbacks in camp was just not likely as there just aren't enough reps to go around. Smith was a longshot at best to beat out Charlie Batch for the number three job, and although Johnson is also a longshot, he has practice squad eligibility should he

In addition to that move that was made official today, the Steelers also announced that linebacker Brandon Johnson has been signed and that tight end Wes Lyons has been released. Johnson, who was brought in for a visit in early May, was originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft after playing his college football at Louisville.
