The Pittsburgh Steelers released kicker Grant Ressel on Monday following the weekend rookie camp. Ressel had been signed as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri following the draft. The Steelers will certainly fill the roster spot with a kicker by next week as the first team OTA session gets under way.
Veteran kicker Dave Rayner was brought in for a visit this past week and the Steelers also had put in a claim for kicker Jake Rogers following him being waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Dallas Cowboys were awarded the waiver claim on Rogers instead.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed their fourth draft pick on Tuesday as second round tackle Mike Adams has come to terms according to Ed Bouchette on Twitter. Adams joins Alameda Ta'amu, Chris Rainey and Toney Clemons as draft picks signed thus far.
There was speculation that Adams would have part or all of his signing bonus deferred as part of the stipulations agreed to prior to the draft for Adams to get back on the Steelers draft board, but Bouchette states that was never a consideration. The financial details of the four year deal for Adams have not been released, but it is expected to total

I had a feeling that a few corresponding roster moves might be on the way soon as the Pittsburgh Steelers roster was over 90 players after the undrafted free agents had been identified. That indeed was the case on Wednesday as Mark Kaboly reports via Twitter that running back Chad Spann and cornerback Antonio Smith have now been released.
Spann was signed to the Steelers practice squad in mid December of last season and was promoted to the active roster for the AFC Wild Card game against the Denver Broncos after Rashard Mendenhall was lost for the season in the season finale against the Cleveland

The 2012 NFL Draft is no in the books and Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert announced during his post draft press conference that they will likely sign 10 undrafted free agents to fill out the 90 man roster. I will be tracking these names throughout the night and you should be warned that none of these names are official until they are announced by the team on Monday. Players have been known to back out of verbal agreements before signing.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are already making news on draft day as Ed Bouchette reports via Twitter that unrestricted free agent quarterback Byron Leftwich has been re-signed. Leftwich missed all of the 2011 season after breaking his left arm in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. He was placed on injured reserve at the start of the season as a result.
Leftwich also missed a majority of the 2010 season as well with a sprained knee suffered in a preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. He was not placed on injured reserve but only saw action in the season finale against the Cleveland

Another Pittsburgh Steelers unrestricted free agent has been re-signed as it was announced on Monday that veteran quarterback Charlie Batch will return on a one-year contract. The financial details have not been released but the contract is believed to be a veteran qualifying contract with a base salary of $925,000. The signing bonus is likely no greater than $65,000 and that means the reduced salary cap hit on Batch will likely be between $540,000 and $605,000 depending on the bonus given.
Batch was originally signed by the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent in 2002. Last season he completed

Scott Brown is reporting via Twitter that Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free agent lineman Doug Legursky has signed his one year restricted tender offer of $1.26 million. Legursky is the third restricted free agent now to sign his tender as Ramon Foster and David Johnson have also signed theirs this past week. That leaves Ryan Mundy, Keenan Lewis and Mike Wallace as the only three players yet to sign.
Mundy and Lewis are expected to sign their $1.26 million tenders at any time now, but it was reported on Wednesday that Wallace does not intend on signing his first round tender of $2.742 million

Immediately after it was announced that the Pittsburgh Steelers had signed unrestricted free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery to a two year deal I speculated on Twitter that I would be surprsiede if the contract totaled out over $3 million. Ed Bouchette tweets tonight that the deal does indeed total out at $3 million.
Will be surprised if Cotchery two-year deal totals out over $3 million. Signing bonus will be key number. 1 million maybe at tops. #steelers— Steelers Depot (@Steelersdepot) April 11, 2012

Howard Balzer of ESPN Radio in St. Louis reports Thursday via Twitter that Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free agent guard Ramon Foster has signed his one year restricted tender offer. Foster was one of six Steelers restricted free agents that were tendered one year contracts prior to the start of free agency. Foster was tendered at the lowest right of first refusal level of $1.26 million. Being as Foster had not been drafted, the Steelers would not have received a draft pick as compensation had another team signed Foster to an offer sheet and they decided not to match it.
Foster was originally

According to Geoff Coyle of West Virginia Illustrated, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former West Virginia wide tight end Will Johnson after after impressing Pittsburgh scouts at the West Virginia Pro Day this past Friday. Johnson measures in at nearly 6 feet, 2 inches and weighed 242 pounds. He did 30 reps of 225 at the WVU pro day and posted an unofficial 40 time of 4.49 seconds. Johnson reportedly had a few teams interested in him last year during his own pro day, but he never was signed. According to Pittsburgh Post Gazette beat writer Ed Bouchette, the releases of veteran wide receiver Hines Ward, defensive end Aaron Smith, linebacker James Farrior and guard Chris Kemoeatu were made official last Friday at 4 p.m. There had been some uncertainty of when it would be official, but now we know it is. That of course means that all four were free at that time to start negotiating with other teams, and as Bouchette reports, it appears that Kemoeatu and his agent Ken Vierra are already talking to a few teams.
Bouchette also said that Smith is expected to retire and that is not surprising

In some not so surprising news today, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they have released cornerback Bryant McFadden and wide receiver Arnaz Battle and officially announced that they have signed safety Myron Rolle, wide receiver Juamorris Stewart and linebacker Brandon Hicks to future contracts.
The release of McFadden and Battle were expected as the Steelers start to clear salary cap room for 2012. McFadden was scheduled to count nearly $2.667 against the 2012 cap and Battle was scheduled to count almost $1.3625 million. By releasing both players prior to June 1st, the Steelers will eat

Hicks was a teammate with Gilbert at the University of Florida and was signed by the Buffalo Bills after going undrafted last April. Ed Bouchette has confirmed a rumor circulating last night that the Pittsburgh Steelers have indeed signed former Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith to a future contract. Smith won the Heisman Trophy in 2006, his senior year with the Buckeyes, and was subsequently drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.
In his first 3 seasons with the Ravens, Smith started just 2 games. He was released by the Ravens before the start of the 2010 season and was quickly signed by the San Francisco 49ers where he started 6 games during his one season there. For his career Smith completed
