Pretty much as expected, defensive lineman Corbin Bryant cleared waivers following his release on Saturday and has been re-signed back to the Steelers practice squad today. Bryant was waived Saturday to make room for linebacker Mortty Ivy, who was promoted from the practice squad to the 53 man roster. The Steelers needed the inside linebacker depth with James Farrior down with a calf injury and with the recent news that Farrior could be down for a few more weeks, Ivy is likely to stay on the roster for a while. Steelers Promote Mortty Ivy, Waive Corbin Bryant

The Steelers have promoted linebacker Mortty Ivy from the practice squad today with veteran James Farrior suffering from a calf injury. There is no word who was released to make room for Ivy on the 53 man roster.

Ivy was resigned last week to the practice squad after Farrior injured his quad against the Cardinals.

UPDATE: Corbin Bryant was waived to make room for Ivy on the 53 man roster. Bryant will likely be re-signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Steelers Place Aaron Smith On Injured Reserve

We now know the second half of the transaction of Corbin Bryant being promoted to the active roster as veteran defensive end Aaron Smith has been placed on injured reserve with his foot injury thus ending his season and perhaps career. 2011 was slated to be the final year under contract for Smith, but he restructured prior to the signing of Max Starks and an extra year was added. The Steelers made a few practice squad moves today as they released running back Tristan Davis and linebacker Mortty Ivy and signed safety Da’mon Cromartie-Smith and defensive tackle Elisha Joseph to take their places. The merry-go-round of Steelers transactions continues today as recently released offensive lineman Chris Scott has cleared waivers and has been signed to the Steelers practice squad today according to Steelers Digest. Scott was released on Wednesday to make room for tackle Max Starks on the 53 man roster. As expected the Steelers also announced a practice squad move this morning as safety Damon Cromartie-Smith was released from the 8 man practice squad and running back Tristan Davis was signed to take his spot. The Steelers signing of Davis is due to the injuries to Rashard Mendenhall and Mewelde Moore. Mendenhall has a strained hamstring while Moore has a bad ankle. Davis will be used this week to emulate Titans running back Chris Johnson in practice. Steelers Sign Max Starks, Release Chris Scott

The Steelers re-signed tackle Max Starks today to the active roster and released 2010 5th round draft pick Chris Scott to make room for him on the 53 man roster. Starks was originally drafted by the Steelers in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft and started 68 games for the Steelers over a seven year span. Starks suffered a season-ending neck injury last season that cost him most of the year. He was released prior to the start of training camp this year with two years remaining on his contract. The Steelers have signed back tight end Jamie McCoy to the practice squad and have released recently signed Dorin Dickerson on Thursday. Dickerson was just signed on Monday after working out for the Steelers last week following his release from the Texans. Dickerson is a product of the University of Pittsburgh and was originally drafted by the Texans in the 7th round of the 2010 NFL draft. The early word is that Dickerson may have left the team, but that has yet to be confirmed. Steelers Place T Colon On IR, Sign T Meredith

Well it did not take long for the Steelers to make a decision on injured right tackle Willie Colon today as he was placed on injured reserve this afternoon following his morning triceps surgery and free agent tackle Jamon Meredith was signed to the 53 man roster to take his place. Meredith, who is 6 foot 5, 312 lbs, played under Steelers offensive line coach Sean Kugler when both were with the Bills. The Steelers also had worked out formers Seahawks tackle Ray Willis on Tuesday, but opted to sign Meredith instead. Steelers Sign Dorin Dickerson To Practice Squad

Scott Brown is reporting via Twitter that the Steelers have signed former University of Pittsburgh tight end Dorin Dickerson to the practice squad today. Dickerson worked out for the Steelers last week after being released by the Texan during the final roster cuts. The Texans drafted Dickerson in the 7th round of the 2010 draft and worked to convert him to wide receiver. A day after the Steelers trimmed down the roster the 53 players they announced the 8 player practice squad signings as well as the team captains. The eight practice squad players signed were running back John Clay, wide receiver Tyler Grisham, tight end Jamie McCoy, tackle Trevis Turner, center John Malecki, linebacker Mortty Ivy, defensive end Corbin Bryant and safety Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith. Steelers Get Down To 53 With Release Of 5 More Players

The Steelers finished making their final roster cuts on Saturday with the release of 5 more players. The roster now stands at 53 players after offensive lineman Tony Hills, punter Jeremy Kapinos, cornerback Crezdon Butler, tight end John Gilmore and defensive end Jarrett Crittenton were released. The Steelers released 21 players on Friday and placed quarterback Byron Leftwich on injured reserve. No surprise players were released yesterday. The Steelers roster cuts have started as the team starts the march towards gettuing down to 53 players from the 80 currently on the roster. The first two names to surface this afternoon are kicker Swayze Waters and linebacker Mortty Ivy. Waters was a long-shot to beat out Shaun Suisham for the kicking job after Suisham was signed to a 4-year deal just a matter of weeks ago. Waters showed a strong leg during camp on both kickoffs and field goals, but missed a 27-yard field goal against the Eagles in the second preseason game. The Steelers made their needed cuts Tuesday morning to get in compliance with the league's mandated 80 man roster deadline of 4 p.m. ET today. Released this morning were nose tackle Anthony Gray, wide receiver Terrence McCray, cornerback Niles Brinkley and linebacker Chris Ellis. The roster now stands at 80 players. Just weeks after signing outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley to an extension, the Steelers announced today that they have signed linebacker Lawrence Timmons to a new 6 year - $50 million deal. The new Timmons deal is just a hair under the deal the 49ers gave inside linebacker Patrick Willis. Willis signed a 7 year - $53.51 million deal last year. Steelers Digest is reporting that the Steelers have signed Trai Essex today and have released lineman Nevin McCaskill to make room on the 90 man roster. Essex was the opening day right guard last year for the Steelers, but ended up losing the job after he returned from an early season ankle injury. Following the 2010 season he was an unrestricted free agent and did not appear to receive any interest from any other teams since the lockout ended. The Steelers broke camp this morning with a couple of roster moves as wide receiver Limas Sweed was waived injured and tight end Eugene Bright was waived off of the PUP list. To take their spots on the roster, the Steelers signed defensive backs Kevin Dockery and Macho Harris. Sweed has had a litany of problems since being drafted by the Steelers in the second-round of the 2008 NFL draft and he could not stay healthy again this year in camp.
