To make room for the recently signed draft picks and get down to the league mandated roster limit of 80, the Steelers released 7 players on Tuesday. Those players released were: wide receiver Jason Chery, kicker Piotr Czech, linebacker Derrick Doggett, punter Adam Graessle, nose tackle Cordarrow Thompson, center Bradley Vierling and cornerback Trae Williams. The Steelers have 4 draft picks yet to be signed and are currently down to 79 players under contract on the active roster with wide receiver Limas Sweed on the injured reserve list.

I was asked via email why the Steelers now have 91 players on the roster. That 91 really is a floating number. NFL teams are only allowed 80 signed players on a roster at any given time. You see, the Steelers drafted 10 players, but none of those 10 players are under contract yet. The Steelers have now signed 9 undrafted free agents after today's signing of Bradley Vierling. As I noted this morning in my around the web segment, it appeared as if Vanderbilt center Bradley Vierling would be signed as an undrafted free agent. According now to the Tennessean, Vierling signed a free-agent football contract with the Steelers on this morning.
