Now that we have seen the initial quarterback rotation during mini-camp. Which quarterback do you hope starts the season for the Steelers in place of the suspended Ben Roethlisberger? Please vote only once and remember that the poll is only up for 24 hours.

Here are some notes below I have collected from the Steelers Friday mini-camp practice.
Byron Leftwich worked as the first team quarterback followed by Dennis Dixon and then Charlie Batch.
Cornerback Bryant McFadden worked as the first team left cornerback ahead of William Gay while Gay worked as the nickel back and the first-team special teams gunner opposite special teams ace, Anthony Madison.
Andre Frazier worked first team outside right linebacker in place of the absent James Harrison, who was excused for a death in a family back home. Second-round pick Jason Worilds backed up Frazier.
Fourth-round

One day after acquiring quarterback Byron Leftwich in a trade with Tampa Bay, the Steelers extended his current contract. Leftwich had one year left on the two year contract he signed last year with the Buccaneers and the Steelers added one more year to the contract on Wednesday. This means Leftwich is now signed through the 2011 season. Leftwich was present at the Steelers South Side facility this morning, went through his physical evaluation and signed his new contract.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported this morning that the Steelers are indeed actively talking to teams about trying to get a top 10 pick for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the eve of the 2010 NFL draft. Schefter mentioned Oakland, Buffalo and Seattle as teams that are interested in dealing for the soon to be suspended quarterback. After the Tuesday trade for Buccaneers quarterback and former Steeler #2 signal caller, Byron Leftwich, the Steelers now have four quarterbacks currently on the roster.

Yesterday the Steelers sent a 7th round pick to the Buccaneers for our old friend Byron Leftwich. Was it a good deal? Sure it was as you know what you are getting in Leftwich and the Steelers basically are giving back a 7th round compensatory pick they received when they lost him via free agency after the 2008 season so to speak.
What the trade really reveals though is several things. First, the Steelers plan to be without Ben Roethlisberger for an extended amount of time. 4-6 games according to ESPN reports this morning at least. Also you still can not rule out a trade still. While not likely

Another familiar face is coming back to Pittsburgh as the Steelers traded one of their two 7th round draft picks to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for quarterback Byron Leftwich. The 7th round pick was18th pick of round 7 and the 255th pick of the draft. The trade now leaves the Steelers with 10 draft picks and another trade could indeed happen by or on Thursday. The trade now shores up the quarterback position a bit more with the looming suspension of Ben Roethlisberger. Leftwich will look to compete with Dennis Dixon for the number 2 role, while veteran Charlie Batch will likely be behind both Dixon

All of the Steelers brass is down in Orlando for the NFL owners meetings and the media is doing their best to catch back up with Art Rooney II, Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin. Tomlin shed light on many subjects, on Monday, that included the rumors of Bruce Arians being fired, running the football more in 2010, Dennis Dixon and Antwaan Randle El. The biggest statement was that he intends to find and use a fullback that can block like Dan Kreider did.
Scott Brown has a complete Q & A of the talk with Mike Tomlin on his blog.

The NFL announced today that the Steelers will receive three compensatory picks for the upcoming 2010 NFL draft. Just as I predicted the Steelers will get two 5th round picks and one 7th round pick for the 2009 free agent loses of wide receiver Nate Washington, cornerback Bryant McFadden and quarterback Byron Leftwich in free agency last year. Washington and McFadden both qualified as 5th round compensatory picks, while Leftwich qualified for a 7th round compensatory pick. The Steelers currently have 10 draft picks they can use in the NFL draft.

The Steelers will find out Tuesday how many compensatory picks they will receive in this year's draft. You can view my projections I did on our picks a while ago as they are expected to receive picks for losing wide receiver Nate Washington, cornerback Bryant McFadden and quarterback Byron Leftwich in free agency last year.
Not surprising in the least is that the word came out on Sunday that the Steelers have a pre draft visit set with Idaho guard Mike Iupati. Iupati will be a popular guy prior to the draft as several teams will have him as one of their 30 players to visit with.

With the latest Ben Roethlisberger allegations still going on and the 2010 NFL draft lingering right around the corner, I have been reading and hearing several comments from Steeler Nation suggesting the Steelers should draft Tim Tebow because of his altar boy like image. Yes, I am clearly aware that Ben's actions as of late have not been very Steeler like. I also am aware that Ben has not been charged with any crime. He has been judged already in the public opinion and regardless of the outcomes in Georgia and Nevada, Ben will always wear that scarlet letter right next to the Steelers logo.

A few people have emailed me concerning how many compensatory draft picks the Steelers will be rewarded for the 2010 draft. You have to start first with what they lost free agency wise last offseason. The Steelers lost what looks to be three qualifying players in free agency and they did not sign any that qualified as replacements for those lost players. The three players they lost that should qualify were, cornerback Bryant McFadden, wide receiver Nate Washington and quarterback Byron Leftwich. All three should qualify. As far as the rounds go for the compensatory draft picks rewarded, below are

Steelers free-agent backup quarterback Byron Leftwich has agreed to a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers according to ESPN. The deal is for $7.5 million according to John Clayton. Leftwich will be scheduled to make $2 million in 2009. He will also have a $3.5 million roster bonus in 2010 that has to be paid at the start of the NFL free-agency period. If the Buccaneers pay it, Leftwich could make $5.5 million in 2010. This leaves the Steelers with the option of re-signing Charlie Batch or going into the season with Dennis Dixon as the number two quarterback.
