Steelers Ravens Series – Explosive Plays & Turnovers – Fox Tox Stats

One stat that former Ravens head coach Brian Billick brought to the attention of stats enthusiast a few years back was what he termed as the Fox-Tox rating. Basically the stat takes the differential of explosive plays, a play of 20 yards or more and adds it to the differential of the turnovers gained and lost to come to come up with this rating. The video below describes it in more detail, but it is pretty simple. With the Steelers set to take on the Ravens this Sunday, I thought we would look how this stat shakes out in individual games in the series dating back to the 2000 season. The two Read more [...]

Ben Roethlisberger talked to the media on Tuesday and Scott Brown noted how he responded carefully when asked about the NFL’s personal conduct policy as it relates to the recent news that Patriots defensive end Albert Haynesworth will not be suspended initially by Roger Goodell after pleading no contest to simple assault charge. Roethlisberger was also careful in criticizing rules designed to better protect quarterbacks this season. Tim Benz of 105 The X caught up with offensive linemen Doug Legursky and Jonathan Scott on Tuesday to talk about the upcoming game against the Panthers. Legursky Read more [...]

Examining The True Market Value Of Ike Taylor

When trying to put a market value on Ike Taylor, the best place to perhaps start would be what the projected franchise tag amount is, which is determined by the average of the top 5 salary cap numbers at each position. The cornerback position was estimated to be between $14-$15 million for 2011. That amount alone was probably why the Steelers chose to franchise LaMarr Woodley instead of Taylor. The top 5 paid cornerbacks that figured into the average where, DeAngelo Hall, Champ Bailey, Tramon Williams, Dunta Robinson and Marcus Trufant. Between those 5 players they have a combined 15 Pro Bowl selections Read more [...]

Could Delayed Free Agency Drive The Price Tag Up On Ike Taylor?

The 2011 NFL Draft will take place just two weeks from today and it looks almost certain that the free agency signing period, if there is one, will take place after the draft. During a normal offseason the signing of the bulk of the higher profile free agent players has already taken place and teams can then fill in their needs and holes on the roster on draft day. This year it looks like the process will be flip-flopped and several teams will be forced to draft blind so to speak, not knowing the status of their own free agents as well as others. The Steelers certainly fall into this area with Read more [...]

The Steelers wrapped up practice preparation on Friday for the week 4 game on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. Not practicing once again were NT Chris Hoke (knee), G Trai Essex (ankle) and QB Dennis Dixon (knee) and all were ruled out on Friday on the injury report. Doug Legursky will make his second straight start at right guard in place of Essex and in all likelihood, Steve McLendon will be elevated from the practice squad to back up Casey Hampton at nose tackle with Hoke being out. Speculation remains that Dixon could be placed on IR to make room for McLendon if indeed he is will be signed Read more [...]
