While the 2012 compensatory draft picks will not be announced until the league meetings in March, it is pretty easy to guess that the Steelers at worst will receive two 7th round compensatory draft picks for the loss of unrestricted free agents, tight end Matt Spaeth and defensive tackle Nick Eason, last offseason. Compensatory picks are awarded based on a formula that takes into account salary, playing time and postseason honors of each lost free agent and the there must be a net loss of unrestricted free agents by the team to receive compensatory picks. The formula was developed by the NFL Read more [...]
The NFL handed out 32 compensatory draft picks for the 2011 NFL Draft that are awarded to teams that suffered a net loss of certain quality unrestricted free agents last offseason. The Steelers as expected did not receive any after receiving 3 last year. The compensatory draft picks will supplement the 221 regular picks in the regular seven rounds of the draft this April, with picks positioned within the 3rd through the 7th rounds based on the value of the free agent lost. Below are the compensatory draft picks awarded by round with overall selection in parentheses: 3 (97) Carolina Panthers 4 Read more [...]

Is 11 Picks 3 Too Many?

The Steelers have an unprecedented 11 picks in the upcoming 2010 NFL draft that starts on Thursday night and have not had that many in 11 years. The last time they had more draft picks than that was 1992, when they had 14 in a 12-round draft. Last year the Steelers had 9 picks a year ago and used every one of them, but one has to wonder if they will indeed keep all 11 this year. The draft is being touted as an exceptionally deep draft for both offensive and defensive linemen, positions that the Steelers certainly could use some youth and depth at. 11 picks though, may be just too many. Currently Read more [...]
A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2010 NFL Draft have been awarded to 19 teams, the NFL announced today. Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.  The 32 compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 223 choices in the seven rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft (April 22-24).  This year, the compensatory picks Read more [...]

Steelers Receive 3 Compensatory Draft Picks

The NFL announced today that the Steelers will receive three compensatory picks for the upcoming 2010 NFL draft. Just as I predicted the Steelers will get two 5th round picks and one 7th round pick for the 2009 free agent loses of wide receiver Nate Washington, cornerback Bryant McFadden and quarterback Byron Leftwich in free agency last year. Washington and McFadden both qualified as 5th round compensatory picks, while Leftwich qualified for a 7th round compensatory pick. The Steelers currently have 10 draft picks they can use in the NFL draft. Read more [...]
The Steelers will find out Tuesday how many compensatory picks they will receive in this year's draft. You can view my projections I did on our picks a while ago as they are expected to receive picks for losing wide receiver Nate Washington, cornerback Bryant McFadden and quarterback Byron Leftwich in free agency last year. Not surprising in the least is that the word came out on Sunday that the Steelers have a pre draft visit set with Idaho guard Mike Iupati. Iupati will be a popular guy prior to the draft as several teams will have him as one of their 30 players to visit with. Director Read more [...]

2010 Steelers Compensatory Draft Pick Projections

A few people have emailed me concerning how many compensatory draft picks the Steelers will be rewarded for the 2010 draft. You have to start first with what they lost free agency wise last offseason. The Steelers lost what looks to be three qualifying players in free agency and they did not sign any that qualified as replacements for those lost players. The three players they lost that should qualify were, cornerback Bryant McFadden, wide receiver Nate Washington and quarterback Byron Leftwich. All three should qualify. As far as the rounds go for the compensatory draft picks rewarded, below are Read more [...]

Draft Day Trades Likely For The Steelers

The Steelers currently have 9 draft picks for this weekends 2009 NFL draft, but do not be surprised if they come out of the draft with only 6 or 7 players. The likelihood of the Steelers trading away a few picks to move up in the early or middle rounds of the draft is a high probability. The Steelers are strapped salary cap wise and do not need the burden of having to sign 9 players. There will likely be a slew of 8 to 10 undrafted players signed after the draft as well. There are always teams willing to trade down in the middle of the first round and other teams like Dallas that want back in round Read more [...]
Today the NFL awarded a fifth-round compensatory pick to the Steelers for the upcoming 2009 April draft. They were awrarded the compensatory pick for losing guard Alan Faneca and linebacker Clark Haggans to free agency last year while only adding running back Mewelde Moore via free agency. The pick will come at the end of the fifth round and should in essence give the Steelers back to back picks in that round. That now means that the Steelers will have a total of nine draft picks as they received a seventh round pick for the trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that involved offensive lineman Sean Read more [...]

AdamJT13 has become a guru at figuring out compensatory NFL draft picks. Compensatory draft picks are awarded to teams that lose more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire, according to Adam. Adam gives a full explanation on his blog but in short it appears the Steelers could receive a third round compensatory 2009 draft pick for the loss of Alan Faneca. The official list from the NFL will be released very soon, so keep your fingers crossed that Adam is correct.
