Here we are three days into training camp and although there has not been much to report on, I figured I would take this time to give a few of my own thoughts of early camp happenings. I am not hopping on the John Clay bandwagon until I see him attempt to do the little things needed to contribute. There is plenty of film on him running through big holes and some more of him fumbling, but there is not much else. He looks like a one dimensional back right now and until I see that he can pick up a blitz or carry out assignments without the ball, I am with holding judgment. Of course if he picks up Read more [...]
On Saturday, day 3 of training camp started off quickly again as Plaxico Burress was at Latrobe to visit with Mike Tomlin, Kevin Colbert, Omar Kahn and spend some time with his former teammates. Burress was at training camp most of the day Pittsburgh Tribune-Review beat writer Mark Kaboly had a PlaxWatch going throughout the afternoon with great coverage. Burress looked very comfortable per reports and appeared to have a one-on-one with Colbert and Kahn to perhaps talk numbers. Afterwards he was seen making several cell phone calls and smiling quite a bit. It would be easy to speculate that a deal Read more [...]

Steelers Re-sign Practice Squad Defensive End Sunny Harris

A day after safety Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith was re-signed to the offseason roster, the Steelers have also announced they have re-signed practice squad defensive end Ra'Shon Sunny Harris to their offseason roster on Thursday. Harris was originally drafted by the Steelers in the sixth round (205th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft, but was released prior to the start of the season. After spending time on the Carolina Panthers active roster and practice squad, he was released and re-signed to the Steelers offseason roster. He was with the Steelers again for the 2010 training camp, but once again failed Read more [...]

The Steelers have re-signed practice squad safety Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith to their offseason roster on Wednesday. Cromartie-Smith spent the entire 2010 season on the Steelers practice squad and was originally signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent last April after playing his college ball at UTEP. He is the cousin of current NFL cornerbacks Antonio Cromartie of the New York Jets and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie of the Arizona Cardinals. Cromartie-Smith is mostly regarded as a strong safety type.

A reader emailed me this afternoon and wanted to know of the 75 players on the active roster, which ones are eligible to be signed to the practice squad and what constitutes eligibility. First we go to the NFL rules on this: What makes a player eligible for an NFL practice squad? (a) The practice squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad: (i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL experience; and (ii) free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games during Read more [...]
The Steelers trimmed down to 75 players on Tuesday morning and now will need to cut 21 more by September 4th. Why 21 and not 22 you ask? This is because quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be moved to the reserve/suspended list, so technically that will not be a cut. I have listed 10 players that will likely be seeing the Turk soon and 16 players who could be considered on the bubble right now in my opinion. None of these are locked in stone mind you and this list is for entertainment purposes only, so no one get your feelings hurt until the cuts are made as ANYTHING can happen in these final days Read more [...]
The Steelers continued their rookie draft pick signings on Wednesday as 5th round draft pick and tackle Chris Scott signed a 3 year contract worth around $1.355 million dollars with a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $140,000. Scott was the first of three 5th round picks the Steelers had in the draft and the 151st player drafted overall. At Tennessee, Scott started the final 39 games of his career and helped block for a rushing attack that averaged 157 yards per game and 19 touchdowns in 2009. To make room on the roster for Scott, the Steelers released undrafted rookie safety Da'mon Cromartie Read more [...]

Steelers Undrafted Free Agent Signings

The draft as over and the Steelers will now begin the process of signing 5-7 undrafted free agents. Check back here and I will pass along the un-drafted free agents as I get them. Please note that none of these are official and will not be until announced on Steelers.com. These reports come in fast from various sources and sometimes are just invites to work out. UPDATE: Daryll Clark reports that he has not agreed yet with Steelers. As I warned these come in from various sources, so be warned. Colbert said 5-7 UDFA's will be signed. I currently have 7 on my unconfirmed list, so that may be about Read more [...]
