Could Bruce Arians Give Us A Pony This Year?

You may have read the nugget Ed Bouchette wrote in a recent post about the Steelers using the Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman Saturday night against the Giants in a Pony backfield reminiscent of the the way Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier were used in the same backfield in the 70's. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians used the Pony backfield while coaching in Cleveland and threatened to use it after Mendenhall was drafted in 2008. The drama of this week is over before it ever got started, as according to Post Gazette beat writer Ed Bouchette, linebacker Lawrence Timmons told a group of reporters on Monday that free safety Ryan Clark will sit out this weeks preseason game in Denver as a precaution. Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will start tonight in the second preseason game versus the Giants and New York and may play two series depending on how long the first series goes. Overall he is expected to play 12-15 snaps. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced today in his weekly press conference that rookie 6th round draft pick running back Jonathan Dwyer is doubtful to play Saturday night versus the Giants with a shoulder injury he suffered against Detroit last week. Dwyer has not participated in the hitting portions of practice this week and continues to miss valuable practice time in the process. Neither Maurkice Pouncey nor rookie running back Jonathan Dwyer is expected to be sidelined very long with their hamstring problems. Guard Ramon Foster could resume light workouts as early as today. The biggest news today is that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has agreed to a three-year contract extension. Tomlin's new contract extension will carry him through 2014. His original contract when the Steelers hired him in 2007, had one year and an option left on it.
