Dejan Kovacevic reports via Twitter this morning that Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley informed him that the team has approached him about getting a multi-year contract done with him. Kovacevic said that Woodley did not go into specifics, only to say it is a long term deal discussion. Steelers Place Franchise Tag On LB LaMarr Woodley

Jason La Canfora reports that the Steelers have officially placed the franchise tag on linebacker LaMarr Woodley as expected and will announce the move later today. It has long been speculated that Woodley would be franchised as the team works towards getting a long term deal with the left outside linebacker. 2010 was the final year of Woodley's rookie contract in which it paid him $550,000 in base salary and with bonus money, he was a around a $900,000 cap charge. Steelers Place Franchise Tag On Max Starks

The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed the franchise tag on tackle Max Starks on Thursday, a move that will keep him from entering free agency and guarantee him $8.451 million in salary for the 2009 season. The Steelers will now attempt to work out a long-term deal with Starks, who started 11 games last season at the left tackle position. This is the second season in a row that the Steelers have used a tag to keep Starks from becoming an unrestricted free agent. He was given the transition tag last season and was paid $6.9 million.

The NFL Players Association has released the 2009 NFL Franchise/Transition tender amounts.
