The Steelers 2011 NFL Draft is now over and we have 7 new Steeler players to welcome to the fold and it consists of 7 seniors this time around. 5 of these 7 players made pre draft visits to Pittsburgh. Day 3 of the draft was as exciting as the first 2 days in my opinion and the draft seemed to move at a good speed. Steelers Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert clearly did not reach per his usual style at let the draft come to him as expected. Rounds 1 through 3 draft picks, Cameron Heyward, Marcus Gilbert and Curtis Brown were all quality need fills and the players drafted in rounds 4-7

Steelers practice squad running back Frank Summers, a fifth-round draft pick of the Steelers in 2009, signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers this week. Summers likely sees the writing on the wall that his chances to make the 53 man roster with the Steelers in 2011 was very slim. The move also gets him back closer to his roots in Oakland.
Steelers safety Ryan Clark joined 93.7 The Fan live in the studio to recap the Steelers loss in Super Bowl XLV, the seating debacle and said all the owners offers from the league concerning the labor situation are “totally ridiculous.”

In his weekly press conference today, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin did not sound too confident that starting tight end Heath Miller would be ready this week against the Bengals as he recovers from the vicious concussion he sustained Sunday night against the Ravens. In fact he termed Miller doubtful today. He did give some good news injury wise and said back-up tight end Matt Spaeth has been cleared to return from his concussion he suffered against the Raiders a few weeks back. The Steelers only other tight end on the roster is David Johnson. They also have running back Isaac Redman they can

Oh how things can change so quickly. One play of the preseason even. As it stands right now, it looks like Byron Leftwich has some MCL damage. Early reports say it is torn, but that is not confirmed. This 53 man roster prediction of mine assumes he will be placed on IR. If not, I get one mulligan before the cuts are made Saturday. Here is the 53 man prediction from last week and I will note the changes and why I made them.
First I added Kraig Urbik back because I feel he has improved greatly over the last 2 weeks. This takes me from 9 to 10 lineman. The next change is the releasing of Joe Burnett

The Steelers beat the Carolina Panthers 19-3 in the 4th and final preseason game of the 2010 season, but may have lost quarterback Byron Leftwich in the process. Below are my notes and nuggets I kept on the game along with my observations. I have much more coming on this game and am working through the night. These are initial reactions of mine as I am about to watch the game a second time and begin working up tape selections. Below are the notes I compiled throughout the game. remember these are initial reactions one time through the game.
Byron Leftwich injury looked like a whip to the knee.

It is getting down to crunch time and the Steelers are quickly approaching cut down day on September 4th, when they have to get down to 53 players plus the suspended Ben Roethlisberger. At this point, I am finding it hard to believe that either Frank Summers or Jonathan Dwyer will survive the final cuts. Dwyer is a project and Summers is a project that should be over. If indeed neither stick, the Steelers head into the 2010 season with only Rashard Mendenhall, Mewelde Moore and Isaac Redman as running backs. Combined all three have 700 carries for 3157 yards in the NFL and of course Redman has

A reader emailed me this afternoon and wanted to know of the 75 players on the active roster, which ones are eligible to be signed to the practice squad and what constitutes eligibility. First we go to the NFL rules on this:
What makes a player eligible for an NFL practice squad?
(a) The practice squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad: (i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL experience; and (ii) free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games during

The Steelers trimmed down to 75 players on Tuesday morning and now will need to cut 21 more by September 4th. Why 21 and not 22 you ask? This is because quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be moved to the reserve/suspended list, so technically that will not be a cut. I have listed 10 players that will likely be seeing the Turk soon and 16 players who could be considered on the bubble right now in my opinion. None of these are locked in stone mind you and this list is for entertainment purposes only, so no one get your feelings hurt until the cuts are made as ANYTHING can happen in these final days

Ok, we are now three games through the preseason games and the Steelers are licking their wounds after losing to the Broncos Sunday night. I have just finished watching the replay for a 3rd time and am ready to release my latest 53 man roster prediction. Below are the changes and the reasoning for the add and drops. The only real change I made this week from last week, is to add Jonathan Dwyer back to the 53 man roster and have cut fullback Frank Summers. It is not so much that Dwyer had a better showing last night, which he did, as much as Summers is not playing well and they just do not need

Veteran center Justin Hartwig said he is worried about his future with the team because he sees what is happening with rookie Maurkice Pouncey taking over his job. Hartwig, though, said he wants to remain with the Steelers. You can listen to his media interview from yesterday right here.
Speaking of Pouncey, it is a big week for him, but you would not know it by this interview yesterday. For a rookie, he is very relaxed and poised with the media. He also says he and former Steelers center Dermontti Dawson have reached out to one another.

I received an email asking me to post the cumulative pass target stats through the Steelers first two preseason games of 2010. I got these together in a hurry, so here they are for those that value them. You can see that rookie Antonio Brown leads the way with 5 catches of 5 targets thus far for 96 yards and 1 touchdown.

Let us hope Ike Taylor got that out of his system. Any how I gave Taylor the
