Following the lockout the Steelers offseason has been filled with the writing of several big checks with the latest being the new 4-year, 36.5 million contract for the all-everything safety Troy Polamalu that took place at the airport today, just before the Steelers left for Baltimore. The Steelers had a long laundry list of things to do in a short period of time and they proved that the salary cap and cash flow was not an obstacle for them.
Several people have asked me via Twitter and email just how much the Steelers have spent this offseason, so I thought I would break it down before the season

Now that the CBA has been ratified, the Steelers made several signings official and released several players for the needed roster spot. It was officially announced that cornerback William Gay, nose tackle Chris Hoke, running back Mewelde Moore and punter Daniel Sepulveda have all been re-signed to one-year deals as unrestricted free agents. Unrestricted tight end John Gilmore signed his one-year contract and long snapper Greg Warren, also an unrestricted free agent, signed a two-year deal. It was officially announced that quarterback Dennis Dixon signed his one-year restricted free agent tender

Jay Glazer is reporting via Twitter that the players have now ratified the CBA and that football is officially back. The Steelers pushed back the starting time of practice today in hopes that the labor agreement would get enough votes and overcome the HGH testing obstacle, so the Steelers 15 free agent players that have agreed to terms could finally begin practicing with the team. Until the ratification process was complete, signed free agent players were unable to take part in practice.
The Steelers ended up beginning practice at around 4:30 p.m. with several of the free agents ready to go

It was pretty uneventful day news wise on Wednesday, day 7 of Steelers training camp, but there still was a little to talk about.
First off, for everyone still interested in former kicker Jeff Reed, I told you yesterday that he was visiting the Seahawks and today it was announced that he was signed by them. This means that Skippy is set to return to Pittsburgh week 2 when the Steelers host the Seahawks. I suspect he will get an earful from a portion of Steeler Nation.
Rookie undrafted tight end Weslye Saunders joined David Todd and I for a mid morning interview and you can listen to that

Day 6 of Steelers training camp is in the books and this post will serve as your daily recap of the comings and goings from Tuesday at Latrobe.
The morning started with the announcement that long snapper Greg Warren had agreed to terms. The Steelers only had one long snapper in camp in the form of Derek Chard and Warren now appears to be the odds on favorite to continue his role as the long snapper. This now means that all of 2010 specialist are back on the roster in Warren, Daniel Sepulveda, Shaun Suisham and Jeremy Kapinos. Sepulveda is the odds on favorite to beat out Kapinos if indeed he

Another day and another Steelers unrestricted free agent is back in the fold as long snapper Greg Warren has agreed to terms this morning. Warren was originally signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2005. Warren has sustained a few serious knee injuries over the years, but continues to bounce back. The deal reportedly is for two years.
Warren makes the 9th unrestricted free agent the Steelers have signed this offseason. In total, they had 14 players that were labeled unrestricted, 2 players that were restricted. Both those players have signed their tenders as well now, so in total

I was planning to wait until after the first preseason game to post my first 53 man roster, but I have already had several requests to do it now. As many know I was able to nail the 53 man roster last offseason after the final preseason game. Here is the way this works. I will update my prediction from here on out after every preseason game leading up to the final roster cuts. There will be 5 of these in all with this being the first. I will notate in each update why I added or removed a player so you can follow my train of thought. There is no way this first one will be right, but here we go.

Here we are three days into training camp and although there has not been much to report on, I figured I would take this time to give a few of my own thoughts of early camp happenings.
I am not hopping on the John Clay bandwagon until I see him attempt to do the little things needed to contribute. There is plenty of film on him running through big holes and some more of him fumbling, but there is not much else. He looks like a one dimensional back right now and until I see that he can pick up a blitz or carry out assignments without the ball, I am with holding judgment. Of course if he picks up

The Steelers 2011 training camp has begun in Latrobe and here is a quick recap of what happened today in case you missed anything.
The day started with the official announcement that both tackle Max Starks and wide receiver Antwaan Randle El were being released. The surprising Starks news broke last night and the not surprising news on Randle El came this morning.
Art Rooney II joined the DVE morning show to discuss the release of Starks and also said he did not see either James Harrison or Hines Ward missing any playing time due to their recent incidents both were involved in. Rooney also

During the Steelers pre draft press conference today Steelers Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert said, "We're going to pick based on our team as it currently stands," Colbert said. "I don't know how it currently stands because there's different possibilities that exist. But when the lockout began this is our team as we know it, and we're going to draft accordingly."
What Colbert was of course eluding to are the several free agents the Steelers have that are up in the air. Most notably are the ones who's free agent status depends on the outcome of a new CBA like tackle Willie Colon,

Now that things have died down a bit before the draft, I figured it was a good time to look at the potential roster spots on the 53 man roster that one could consider as being unsettled at this point late in March. Several of these spots will close up quickly as soon as we know how the true status of the players that are unrestricted that might be deemed restricted. Also undetermined at this time is the future of free agent Ike Taylor and veteran Flozell Adams as well. Will there be 21 actually roster spot up for grabs? Highly unlikely. In fact when the dust settles I suspect it will be easy to

Long Snapper Greg Warren - Steelers 2011 Free Agent
Free Agent Classification: UFA (unrestricted free agent)
2010 Salary Estimation: $700,000 Base - $832,000 Cap Charge
Analysis: Picking up steam now with our breakdown player by player of each of the Steelers 18 free agents and up next up for analysis is long snapper Greg Warren. In 2010 you did not hear the name of Greg Warren mentioned that much and that is a good thing as a great majority of his snaps on field goals, extra points and punts were right on the money. Warren only had 1 tackle in 2010 on special teams and 1 assist. The Steelers

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Steelers are contemplating cutting Jeff Reed and plan on bringing in kickers for workouts on Tuesday. Reed had a vocal opinion to the media last night. Reed was franchised last off-season for $2.85 million. Reed expressed his unhappiness about his contract several times since training camp and this last outburst combined with his sub par performance this year may be all the front office can handle. It also could be a tactic to just scare Reed straight and see if he snaps out of it. If the Steelers were to make the move, they would likely do it on Tuesday

Opening Statement: So much has happened since the final 2009 season game against Miami and the start of the season must be a welcome sight for the Steelers players and coaches. The preseason was a bit of a blur and was overall a success until quarterback Byron Leftwich went down with a MCL injury in the final game against Carolina. The roster has been paired down to 53 and features 8 rookie draft picks and 17 players 30 years of age or over, 10 of which are defensive players.
The picture heading into the 2010 season is pretty clear for the Steelers as franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger

Steelers free safety Ryan Clark joined the FAN Morning Show on Tuesday and in studio for his first of what is expected to be a weekly Tuesday appearance on the station. Ryan talks on many subjects including the fact he is still getting hate mail from Dolphins fans.
The release for the week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons is up on Steelers.com and is complete with depth chart. One interesting nugget I uncovered yesterday is that Jonathan Scott is the backup long snapper behind Greg Warren with James Harrison now behind him. Position flexibility. Got to love it.
Scott Brown has a good read
