Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin gave his normal injury update today during his usual Tuesday press conference today, but he only ruled out guard Doug Legursky for the Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens so far. Tomlin tried to make it seem like linebackers James Harrison, James Farrior and LaMarr Woodley all have an outside chance of playing this week, but in reality that is likely far fetched based on the other reports floating around. Harrison himself has stated he will not play on Sunday and both Farrior and Woodley are rumored to miss several weeks. Farrior has a bad calf injury and Woodley Read more [...]

Steelers Week 8 Coverage Stats Versus Patriots

Below are the Steelers coverage stats for the week 8 Sunday afternoon game against the New England Patriots. They are broken down by play and include down and distance, line of scrimmage, direction, yards gained, yards after catch, personnel the offense used, defensive package, number of pass rushers and whether or not the defense blitzed on the play. The big thing that sticks out this week is how good the defense did for the most part at not allowing many yards after the catch against a team that has made a living off it this season. On 24 completions the Patriots had 91 yards after the catch, Read more [...]

More Steelers Patriots Observations

I have gone back through the Steelers game against the New England Patriots now a few times and jotted down some more observations that I did not include in the post game recap. I do this every week as it is impossible to see everything just one or two times through a game. Many will judge off of a stat sheet and it is what sets this site apart from the rest as we actually watch the games more than just one time. Here we go. The Patriots were so protective against the long ball early on that is opened up the middle of the field for Heath Miller and Ben Roethlisberger took it. The Steelers Read more [...]

Steelers Beat Patriots 25-17 – Game Recap

It was a great day in Steeler Nation on Sunday as the Steelers knocked off the hated New England Patriots today at Heinz Field 25-17. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was 36 of 50 passing on the day for 365 yards and 2 touchdowns and he attempted 32 of them in the first half alone. The touchdown passes were to running back Mewelde Moore and Antonio Brown, the first of his career in the regular season. Tight end Heath Miller was a huge factor early in the game as the Patriots poor pass defense concentrated early on taking away the deep pass from Mike Wallace. Miller caught 4 of his 7 passes Read more [...]
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin held his post game press conference following the 25-17 win over the New England Patriots today at Heinz Field. As far as injuries go, Tomlin said linebacker LaMarr Woodley suffered a hamstring injury, right tackle Marcus Gilbert had an ankle injury, cornerback Keenan Lewis injured his shoulder and cornerback Ike Taylor suffered a shoulder injury as well as a stinger. Tomlin says they will evaluate those guys in terms of moving forward for next week. Teresa Varley of Steelers.com recently sat down with the always entertaining Ike Taylor in latest edition of the Steelers Speak. Taylor talks about the upcoming Patriots game. Ken Laird has the transcripts up from the Thursday Bruce Arians and Dick LeBeau media session that is worth a read. 93.7 The Fan has some great interviews up with defensive end Brett Keisel, guard Chris Kemoeatu and center Maurkice Pouncey. Steelers left guard Chris Kemoeatu said today that he has been fined $25,000 for two personal foul penalties against the Cardinals this past Sunday. One was an illegal hands to facemask $10,000 fine and the second was $15,000 for a late hit. Both of those incidents came on the Steelers second possession this past week and extremely hurt the drive. Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday that he planned to encourage Kemoeatu that those types of penalties must stop. Four Steelers lineman have now been fined this year dating back to the preseason as Maurkice Pouncey, Doug Legursky and Ramon Foster have Read more [...]

The Steelers have several players you can vote for per the usual and here is the rundown of the players that can ve voted for on offense, defense and special teams. You can vote here. Season 2, Episode 34 of The Terrible Podcast is up and my co-host David Todd is back from Las Vegas without a face tattoo or a new wife, allegedly, just in time for our 100th episode as we recap the Steelers 32-20 win yesterday on the road against the Arizona Cardinals. We'd like to thank all our listeners for the fantastic support and helping us grow the show. We look forward to the next 100 and hope we get another deep playoff run this season in the process. We open this episode with an homage to Aaron Smith. Smith has been out the last three weeks with a foot injury, but while recuperating, Read more [...]

More Steelers Cardinals Observations

I have gone back through the game to do my initial breakdown and start some charting. Here are my expanded observations not mentioned in the game recap of the Steelers week 7 win over the Arizona Cardinals. What can you say about Mike Wallace that has not already been said and seen on tape? It amazes me how teams continue to give him free releases and fail to bracket over the top with a safety at times. The long touchdown Sunday was classic miscommunication it seemed and blown assignments mixed with Richard Marshall biting on play action. The Cardinals should have taken a timeout there as it Read more [...]

Steelers Week 7 Coverage Stats Versus Cardinals

Below are the Steelers coverage stats for the week 7 Sunday afternoon game against the Arizona Cardinals. They are broken down by play and include down and distance, line of scrimmage, direction, yards gained, yards after catch, personnel the offense used, defensive package, number of pass rushers and whether or not the defense blitzed on the play. The big number that sticks out is of course the 73 yard touchdown to running back LaRod Stephens-Howling after a 5 yard catch with James Farrior in trail. That truly inflated the yards passing allowed and was nearly half of the yards after the catch Read more [...]
The Steelers knocked of the Arizona Cardinals 32-20 today on the road to move to 5-2 on the season. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was 26 of 39 passing for 361 yards and 3 touchdowns to Mike Wallace, Heath Miller and Emmanuel Sanders. Roethlisberger was sacked twice during the game, but did a great job of spreading the ball around to several different receivers including the running backs. The running game produced 91 yards on 28 carries. Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb was 18 of 34 passing for 272 yards and was sacked twice by outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley. Woodley also forced a safety Read more [...]

They are broken down by play and include down and distance, line of scrimmage, direction, yards gained, yards after catch, personnel the offense used, defensive package, number of pass rushers and whether or not the defense blitzed on the play. Outside of a few plays the Steelers pass defense was once again solid against rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert allowing just 109 yards on 25 attempts. Ike Taylor gave up the touchdown to Jason Hill and almost gave up another big play had Gabbert Read more [...]

Steelers Escape Jaguars 17-13 – Game Recap

The Steelers started off good against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but could not put them away as the they escaped with a 17-13 win at Heinz Field today. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was 12 of 23 on the day passing and missed several easy throws as he finished with 200 yards passing. His lone touchdown pass went to Mike Wallace on a 28-yard pass in the second quarter. Running back Rashard Mendenhall returned from a one game absence and had 146 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown. Breaking Down The Woodley Hood Sack Against The Titans

Perhaps the most impressive sack this past Sunday was the 3rd down and 8 sack in the 2nd quarter that LaMarr Woodley and Ziggy Hood split. So much went on in that play that it is great to see via the coaches tape view from behind the play. You can watch the replay here. Below are screen caps from the play. Read more [...]
