Now that day one is in the books and the Steelers addressed the offensive line in round one with the selection of Maurkice Pouncey from Florida. It is time to direct the attention to the Steelers 2nd round pick. In my mock draft, I had Kareem Jackson. I knew his stock was on the rise after talking to a few scouts, but thought there was still an outside shot he would slide to round 2. I was resigned to fact that it might take the Steelers moving up to an earlier round 2 pick to get him and feel they were prepared to at least attempt to do so. The Texans ended all of that by taking Jackson just 2 picks after the Steelers drafted Pouncey. While playing out all of the day 2 scenarios would be mighty tough, now that Jackson is off the board, we can at least look at some other choices the Steelers may make with their #2 pick. I really still think they draft a defensive back with this pick, so that means cornerback or safety. I will however not rule out other positions if players slide.
Below is a short list of players who I consider to be possibilities for the Steelers in round 2 and they should start going quick when round 2 starts. None of the below would surprise me as 2nd round draft picks:
FS Taylor Mays - Southern California
FS Nate Allen - South Florida
FS Morgan Burnett - Georgia Tech
CB Chris Cook - Virginia
CB Brandon Ghee - Wake Forest
ILB Sean Lee - Penn State
DE Alex Carrington - Arkansas State
T Rodger Saffold - Indiana
RB Toby Gerhart - Stanford
WR Golden Tate - Notre Dame
WR Arrelious Benn Illinois
Below is my 2010 Steelers mock draft for the upcoming NFL draft on April 23rd, 24th & 25th. Unless anything major happens in the next few days like trades, suspensions or earthquakes, I will be sticking with this mock draft as my official mock. Please feel free to comment below on why they will or will not draft the players below. Do not get pissy or upset. Do not let me know that guys will go earlier or later. I read everything, all the major media mocks as well as smaller ones. Yes, I know, I get it that you are a self proclaimed internet guru. This is where I see these guys going. Notice the "I", it is not a "You"! Get it?
On the flip side I hit 2 picks last year in Mike Wallace and Ra'Shon Harris. I like my odds at hitting at least 2 picks again this year. Anything I hit more then 2 and I will be ecstatic. Bitch if you want to as it is your dime, but I have nasty rebuttals ready as well.
Round 1 - C Maurkice Pouncey - Florida - Overall best center in the draft and can play guard if need arises. Groomed to take over center position. Seems like the surest of 1st rounders.
Round 2 - CB Kareem Jackson - Alabama - Could indeed slide or Steelers could go up to get him. Could be the best corner in the draft. Knows how to win and played under Nick Saban, who knows how to get kids ready for the NFL.
Round 3 - RB Toby Gerhart - Stanford - Yes, I drank the Kool-aid. You know you could see this guy in the Black & Gold. Could change his name to Steely McBeam. In all seriousness, he fits in every facet of what the Steelers do and is a high character guy.
Round 4 - T Selvish Capers - West Virginia - Could be the future at right tackle. Better run blocker than pass blocker. Very coach-able player who played at West Virginia.
Round 5 - WR Joe Webb - Alabama Birmingham - A pure athlete. The Steelers like drafting quarterbacks-turned-receivers. See Hines Ward and Antwaan Randle El as past examples. A great 5th round project that could make team as 5th receiver.
Round 5 - SS Larry Asante - Nebraska - Has speed and will hit. Could be groomed for future strong safety and future insurance for Troy Polamalu. Needs help in coverage skills, but fits a Dick LeBeau mold at strong safety and run supporter.
Round 5 - NT Jeff Owens - Georgia - Wide body nose tackle that could surprise and be the future behind Casey Hampton. Project player that needs coaching at the next level.
Round 5 - RB LeGarrette Blount - Oregon - Not the character you want, but has a chip on his shoulder and can power run. Short fuse and risky pick for sure. Steelers need running back depth.
Round 6 - ILB Pat Angerer - Iowa - Inside MIKE backer from Iowa that can hit, has speed and can cover. A true three-down player that is a bit undersized, but not in heart. Another kid that just looks right in Black & Gold.
Round 7 - OLB/DE Adrian Tracy - William & Mary - A classic tweener that could be a gem in the 3-4 defense. He is smart, instinctive, competes well versus the run and the pass. Also has good lateral pursuit.
Round 7 - QB Jevan Snead - Mississippi - Quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner attended his pro day. He is what he is, but Tom Brady was a 5th round pick. We all know the Ben situation. This is merely a gut selection by me. Taking a flier last round does not hurt.
EDITED: 4/20/10- Removed the Snead pick now that a 7th round pick has been traded to Tampa for Byron Leftwich.

Many fans and talking heads are linking the Steelers as a possibly landing spot for ex-Rams quarterback Marc Bulger, who was released yesterday, but the Bears makes much more sense. I do not think he will be signed by Pittsburgh.
The Steelers will entertain Iowa offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga for a pre draft visit today. Bulaga is 6-foot-5, 314 pounds, and primarily played left tackle, but did start five games at left guard as a freshman. That makes 14 visitors now to the South Side of the league allowed 30.
PFT has their mock draft up and color me unimpressed. I understand trying to be a little different, but quite a few of these picks make no sense. Silva has the Steelers drafting Kareem Jackson. I could see that, but more like in the 2nd round. Quite a few head scratchers, perhaps Silva is a drinker.

I little bit closer stab at a mock is the first one by Dale Lolley of the Washington Observer. Dale has the Steelers selecting Texas safety, Earl Thomas, which I could very well see happening. Although he does not add much reasoning on the other picks, it is a much more believable mock.
A police report states that the gun that Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers allegedly tried to carry through airport security last Thursday was cocked and in safe mode with seven bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber. Rogers could be on the outs soon in Cleveland.
Continuing on with the Steelers.com segment of draft day memories, back up nose tackle Chris Hoke shares how his hopes of being drafted were crushed. Hoke was signed as an undrafted free agent instead.

Thomas ran a 4.38 in his only 40-yard dash, but he tweaked his hamstring and didn't do any other drills. Thomas is scheduled to come to Pittsburgh for a pre draft visit as well.
Speaking of draft hopefuls, the Steelers hosted five more players yesterday at its South Side practice facility. The pre daft visitors were: Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson, Alabama cornerback Kareem Jackson, Maryland cornerback Nolan Carroll, Alabama-Birmingham wide receiver Joe Webb and Marshall linebacker Albert McClellan. We have the full list of pre draft visits updated daily here. South Carolina linebacker Eric Norwood and Wake Forest CB Brandon Ghee are expected to visit Steelers today.

Another day, another development in the Ben Roethlisberger story. The The 20-year-old female student who accused Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her will now meet with investigators, according to one of her attorneys. This is the same woman who yesterday was reported as being uncooperative in getting interviewed again by the authorities. She certainly isn't helping her case as of late.
Kelly Naqi of ESPN, reports another part of the he said, she said story. This story revolves around one of the men in Ben's entourage, guarding the door to the bathroom and not letting a friend of the accuser past him.
Tribune-Review writer Scott Brown wrote on his blog yesterday that running back Willie Parker could return to the Steelers as he has not not generated much interest on the free agent market thus far. I also wrote about this as well over a week ago. While it is still pretty much speculation on both of our parts, it certainly becomes more likely each day he is not signed elsewhere.
As I reported on Twitter yesterday, the Steelers have scheduled a pre draft visit with University of Maryland cornerback Nolan Carroll for next week according to sources. Ed Thompson has reported that William & Mary defensive end Adrian Tracy and cornerback Kareem Jackson from Alabama will also visit the Steelers in the coming weeks.
Steelers free safety Ryan Clark debated with Skip Bayless, on ESPN's First Take, about Ben Roethlisberger's off field issues and how much of a distraction it will or will not be. The video is below.
Steelers cornerback William Gay talked to Steelers.com Teresa Varley about offseason workouts and preparing for the 2010 season. Gay is a restricted free agent that the Steelers placed a tender on. So far he has garnered no interest from other teams as expected.
