Now that things have died down a bit before the draft, I figured it was a good time to look at the potential roster spots on the 53 man roster that one could consider as being unsettled at this point late in March. Several of these spots will close up quickly as soon as we know how the true status of the players that are unrestricted that might be deemed restricted. Also undetermined at this time is the future of free agent Ike Taylor and veteran Flozell Adams as well. Will there be 21 actually roster spot up for grabs? Highly unlikely. In fact when the dust settles I suspect it will be easy to

The 53 man roster is set for now and the Steelers are about to announce their practice squad and begin preparations to face the Altanta Falcons in week 1 of the 2010 season. Before the season starts, I wanted to take a look at the current players on the 53 man roster who are in their final year of their contract and schedules to be free agents in 2011, if a new CBA is reached and a lock out is avoided. Currently 18 players are entering the final year of their contract and I have a small blurb on each. we will revisit this list much later in the season as it surely will be changed.

The Steelers released 10 players from their preseason roster today in an effort to get down to the NFL’s 53-man limit for the regular season. None of the players released were surprising cuts as TE Eugene Bright, G Dorian Brooks, T Kyle Jolly, WR Brandon London, TE Sean McHugh, DT Scott Paxson, LS Matt Stewart, S Justin Thornton, RB Justin Vincent and LB Renauld Williams were all released. Although no official word yet, reports surfaced that Kraig Urbik was told he would be released and veteran C Justin Hartwig has been given permission to seek a trade or be released. The Steelers must release

Oh how things can change so quickly. One play of the preseason even. As it stands right now, it looks like Byron Leftwich has some MCL damage. Early reports say it is torn, but that is not confirmed. This 53 man roster prediction of mine assumes he will be placed on IR. If not, I get one mulligan before the cuts are made Saturday. Here is the 53 man prediction from last week and I will note the changes and why I made them.
First I added Kraig Urbik back because I feel he has improved greatly over the last 2 weeks. This takes me from 9 to 10 lineman. The next change is the releasing of Joe Burnett

The Steelers trimmed down to 75 players on Tuesday morning and now will need to cut 21 more by September 4th. Why 21 and not 22 you ask? This is because quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be moved to the reserve/suspended list, so technically that will not be a cut. I have listed 10 players that will likely be seeing the Turk soon and 16 players who could be considered on the bubble right now in my opinion. None of these are locked in stone mind you and this list is for entertainment purposes only, so no one get your feelings hurt until the cuts are made as ANYTHING can happen in these final days

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not be permitted to have contact with the Steelers once the season starts, but has said he plans to bring in his own with private quarterbacks coach, Steve Clarkson, from California to work with during his suspension.
The pregame notes for the Steelers final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers has been released and you can read it right here. The game is Thursday night at Heinz Field.
Head coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that inside linebacker James Farrior and cornerback Bryant McFadden, could miss Thursday's preseason finale against Carolina with

Sunday night the Steelers will travel to Denver to play the Broncos in the third preseason game of the 2010 season. Per my normal routine, I have listed below 10 things to look for Sunday heading into the game.
Brown Sanders Flip Flop X & Z - The education of rookie wide receivers Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders continues this week as both will play their opposite positions this week as Brown moves from the z flanker position to the x split end spot and Sanders moves from split end X spot to the Z flanker position. Sanders mostly played the slot and flanker in college and looks to be the

Mike Tomlin said on Wednesday that Antonio Brown will get more work this week as a punt and kickoff returner and punter Daniel Sepulveda also will kick off for the second consecutive game. Tomlin liked the work of each it appears.
Speaking of Sepulveda, yesterday we looked at his kickoff hang times, but PPG columnist Ron Cook looks at his hitting and tackling in an entertaining piece.
Keenan Lewis will start at left cornerback against Denver as Bryant McFadden will likely sit out Sunday after suffering a right pectoral muscle injury against the Giants.

The Steelers re-signed long snapper and linebacker Matt Stewart on Monday and released wide receiver Isaiah Williams to make room for him. It is a bit of a curious move unless current long snapper Greg Warren is having problems with his knees again. This is Stewart's second time on the roster this offseason as he was signed back in June and released right before training camp started. Another theory behind the move is that free safety Ryan Clark is likely to sit out the next preseason game versus Denver as a precaution and cornerback Keenan Lewis could be out as well after suffering a concussion

The Steelers reported to Latrobe on Friday and players straggled in all day per normal. Below are notes from reporting day.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger with his beefy offensive linemen in a caravan of Mini Cooper cars driven over from Pittsburgh. Ben briefly answered a few media questions, but nothing earth shattering to report.
Tackle Max Starks met the media and addressed several things including the signing of Flozell Adams and said he will remain at left tackle and will compete with that Adams will compete at right tackle with Jonathan Scott. Starks had volunteered to move to right tackle,

The Steelers released linebacker Lindsey Witten, linebacker Johnny Williams, and long snapper Matt Stewart on Friday to make room on the 80 man roster for draft picks Maurkice Pouncey, Jason Worilds and free agent tackle Flozell Adams. Williams was a practice squad hold over from the end of the 2009 season, while Witten was an undrafted free agent linebacker/defensive end out of the University of Connecticut. As soon as Pouncey arrives to sign his 5 year contract, the Steelers roster will be at the 80 man limit.

It looks like the Steelers are indeed done with contracts for the offseason and once the season starts, no new deals are likely to be done, especially with the cloudy NFL labor situation. To the best of my calculations, the Steelers have 25 of 81 players on the final year of their current contract. I did not prioritize them below, but it is not hard to pick out those that are high profile moving forward. Those players would be: LaMarr Woodley, Ike Taylor, Jeff Reed and Daniel Sepulveda in my opinion. Dennis Dixon, Willie Colon and Trai Essex are fringe at this point. I have included a blurb on

John Harris explains how he thinks the Steelers brass is not completely sold on head coach Mike Tomlin and why a contract extension has not been reached just yet. Harris goes on to suggest that if Tomlin is not extended by the start of the season, it's a vote of no-confidence in Tomlin.

The Steelers have released long snapper Jared Retkofsky and signed long snapper Matt Stewart to take his place on the roster. Stewart was a 2001 fourth-round draft pick by the Atlanta Falcons and was in training camp with both Arizona and Dallas over the last two seasons. Retkofsky played in 11 games for the Steelers over the past two seasons when Greg Warren went down injured.
