The Steelers reported to Latrobe on Friday and players straggled in all day per normal. Below are notes from reporting day. Ben briefly answered a few media questions, but nothing earth shattering to report. Tackle Max Starks met the media and addressed several things including the signing of Flozell Adams and said he will remain at left tackle and will compete with that Adams will compete at right tackle with Jonathan Scott. Starks had volunteered to move to right tackle, Read more [...]

The Steelers released linebacker Lindsey Witten, linebacker Johnny Williams, and long snapper Matt Stewart on Friday to make room on the 80 man roster for draft picks Maurkice Pouncey, Jason Worilds and free agent tackle Flozell Adams. Per our previous reports, sources have informed Steelers Depot that an agreement will be announced shortly of a 5 year contract with Steelers first round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey. The deal is believed to be an $18 million contract that includes $10.6 in guaranteed monies. We will not know the exact numbers or max escalators until the contract is filed with the NFLPA, but Pouncey should be in agreement by the 4PM deadline today. It is unclear when Pouncey will arrive at Latrobe and we will update this information as soon as we get it. Agent Joel Segal was reportedly looking for an initial contract Read more [...]

The speculation is now over as Max Starks said upon his arrival to training camp, that he will remain the Steelers left tackle and newly signed free agent Flozell Adams will move to the right tackle spot. Starks indicated that the coaching staff wants as much continuity possible on the offensive line. Starks said he volunteered to move back to the right side, but the coaches said no. In related news, Trai Essex has been told he will remain working at the right guard position and compete with first round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey for the starting spot.

The Steelers are inching closer to a contract with 1st round pick Maurkice Pouncey and agent Joel Segal, sources tell Steelers Depot. Negotiations have picked up steam the last few hours and have been aided by the recent signings of Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon and the Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain. Witherspoon was drafted one pick after Pouncey at number 19 overall and received a 5-year, $17.5 million max deal that includes $10.5 million in guaranteed monies. The Pouncey deal is expected to be 5 years and in the neighborhood total value of between 20 and 22 million dollars, sources Read more [...]

Steelers Top Six 2010 Training Camp Battles

When the Steelers report to Latrobe on tomorrow, so will begin several training camp battles that we will be keeping a close eye on. We have narrowed them down to six to match the six championships the Steelers have. They are as follows. 1. Quarterback - Byron Leftwich vs. Dennis Dixon - Mike Tomlin has let veteran Byron Leftwich receive most of the first team snaps since his re-acquisition from Tampa Bay. The Steelers will need a starter for at least 4 games with franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger suspended to start the season and Leftwich looks to be the guy unless Dennis Dixon can Read more [...]
John Harris talks to cornerbacks Bryant McFadden, Ike Taylor and William Gay about the need for the Steelers to make more splash plays on defense in 2010 and more specifically in the secondary. This group has been training together down in Florida. John Grupp, caught up with Steelers legend Frenchy Fuqua one day after former Oakland Raiders Pro Bowl safety Jack Tatum died from a heart attack, Fuqua, once again, declined to publicly discuss one of the most famous plays in NFL history. The two will be forever linked together by the Immaculate Reception in the 1972 playoffs at Three Rivers Stadium Read more [...]
The Steelers will announce on Thursday that they have reached an agreement with 2010 2nd round draft pick Jason Worilds on a 4 year, 3.7 million dollar contract believed to include 1.9 million in guaranteed monies. Per club policy, the official numbers will not be available until filed with the NFLPA, but the Virginia Tech product will be signed on time and ready to report to Latrobe on Friday for the start of training camp. The Steelers will need to release a player from the roster to make room for Worilds and speculation is that either linebackers Johnny Williams or Renauld Williams will be released. Read more [...]
The hearts of Steeler Nation go out to the Cowher family as most know that Kaye Cowher lost her battle with skin cancer on Friday at the age of 54. Mackenzie Carpenter has a great read on Mrs. Cowher in the Sunday PPG. Steelers, first-round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey had been training under the watchful eye of Tom Shaw at ESPN Wide World of Sports up until a few weeks ago. Pouncey is said to be in good shape and ready to report as soon as his contract is done. I have a good feeling it will be wrapped up late this week. Steelers second round draft pick, linebacker Jason Worilds, joined Troy Read more [...]
Ok, the mini camps and OTA's are now over and we are just 8 days away from training camp opening in Latrobe for the Steelers. On April 24th, I took my first offseason guess at the 53 man roster and quite a bit has changed over 3 months. Willie Colon is out for the year and draft pick Chris Scott looks to miss much of if not all of camp with a foot injury. I replaced them with Jonathan Scott and Tony Hills respectively and added Doug Legursky as it is evident Maurkice Pouncey is destined to work at guard initially. Nick Eason was scratched to make room for Crezdon Butler, who I now think will make Read more [...]
Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians says they need to run the ball better, but not necessarily more. Arians goes on to say he thinks it is the quality of the runs more than the quantity that worries him. This ought to get the blood pressure up of Steeler Nation on Thursday. Quarterback Dennis Dixon was back in Eugene, Oregon and gave KEZI an interview. Dixon says he is working on becoming more vocal and working on his leadership skills. He also said he expects head coach Mike Tomlin to name a starter after the first pre-season game. First round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey denied on Read more [...]

Yo Adrian, Don’t Unpack That Suitcase

As we just informed you in the last post, the Steelers signed journeyman lineman Adrian Jones to a one year deal on Wednesday to fill a spot on the roster vacated by Willie Colon. I just went back and did some film work and research on Jones and he probably shouldn't get too settled when he arrives at Latrobe for training camp. Jones was a was a fourth round selection by the New York Jets in 2004 and waived in 2007. The stay in New York also included a DUI in November of 2006 that landed him on the NFL offender list. Then Jets General Manager Terry Bradway raved about Jones ability to play tackle, Read more [...]
Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer has a press conference scheduled for this afternoon and will respond to allegations that former Gator lineman Maurkice Pouncey took $100,000 from the representative of a sports agent in December. The Pouncey family is reportedly holding off on a statement until Meyer addresses the media today. Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley is getting a bit more vocal about his contract situation and we have all the interviews and stories here. Mike Florio joined Seibel and Starkey on 93.7 The Fan to discuss the Woodley situation in depth. Florio says the Read more [...]
