Observer-Reporter writer Dale Lolley has a snapshot article for SteelCityInsider.net on undrafted free agent Lindsey Witten. Witten is trying to make the team as an outside linebacker after playing defensive end for the University of Connecticut. According to Lolley, Witten has bulked up to 250 pounds and is ready for camp to start. If you missed it yesterday, I posted my thoughts and reasoning on why the Steelers will not let outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley just walk away next year. Hopefully it calms your nerves. Steelers Leaning To Moving Essex To Left Tackle?

NFL.com reporter Jason La Canfora is reporting on Twitter that the Steelers are seriously considering moving right guard Trai Essex to left tackle and current left tackle Max Starks to the right tackle spot in place of the injured Willie Colon. Colon had surgery this morning on his right Achilles and is lost for the season as most know. The Steelers had brought in free agent tackle Flozell Adams on Tuesday for a look, but could be asking as much as 4 million a year, which is way out of line for what the Steelers would want to pay him. I mentioned several options myself at right tackle, but La Canfora Read more [...]
As it stands at this early stage, things do not look good for right tackle Willie Colon. Colon suffered a right Achilles injury today while working out at Steelers' headquarters. Colon left the facility on crutches and the ever important MRI results are now awaited. If he has indeed torn Achilles tendon, he will be lost for the season and might have played his final game in the black and gold. If indeed he misses any time, the Steelers have several options. Jonathan Scott was signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Bills in the offseason where he started eight games under new offensive Read more [...]
We have yet to hear back from Jordan Woy, the agent for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, but have no reason not to believe our contract report of 3 years, 2 million is not correct. (((Should be 1.8 million - Bad math and 3 years versus 4 years others received))). The picks just ahead of and just behind Sanders had signed and the contract numbers slot perfectly between Earl Mitchell of the Texans and Corey Peters of the Falcons. The only difference is both those players received 4 year deals. The Steelers have a long history of signing players drafted round 3 or later to only 3 year deals and Read more [...]
Kicker Jeff Reed said on Wednesday that his chances to sign a long-term contract with the Steelers by July 15 are 50-50. If he does not have a new deal in place by that time, he will play out his existing franchise tag, one year deal and become a free agent after the 2010 season. Reed claims he wants to stay in Pittsburgh and I think this deal will get done as long as he keeps his nose clean the rest of the Summer and is not a distraction. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation released audio and video taped statements on Wednesday from the closed sexual assault investigation of quarterback Ben Read more [...]
The biggest news on Thursday was that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell advised the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger that he is cleared to return to team activities beginning next week. No word on if the suspension has been shortened to 4 games yet, but there is no hurry for that word to come down. The Steelers resume practices on June 1st. Art Rooney II also issued a short statement on the matter. Scott Brown has a story on new Steelers special teams coordinator, Al Everest. Everest uses an interesting analogy in describing special teams play. "I always say if there's 20 hostages, and you save Read more [...]

Steelers 2009 Offensive Line Stats

I had a few emails this past week asking about the Steelers offensive line stats for the 2009 season. I finally got around to compiling them thanks to Stats.com. I have ranked the lineman by sacks allowed. I also included the sack yardage allowed, penalties as well as penalty yardage. Player Games Started Pen Pen Yards False Starts Holding Sacks Allowed Sack Yards Max Starks 16 16 7 55 3 4 8 44.5 Willie Colon 16 16 6 40 4 2 8 38.0 Justin Hartwig 16 16 3 31 0 3 7 49.0 Chris Kemoeatu 12 12 4 35 1 3 4.5 37.5 Trai Essex 16 16 3 20 2 1 1.5 21.5 Ramon Read more [...]
Two of the most pressing offseason things the Steelers will need to do, outside of the draft and free agency, is to get contract extensions done with wide receiver Santonio Holmes and linebacker LaMarr Woodley. Both players enter 2010 with it being their final years on their contracts. Both Holmes and Woodley put up career numbers with Holmes falling 1 reception short of 80 on the season and Woodley closing out the 2009 season by registering at least a half a sack or better for the final 8 games. The contract extension that Holmes is likely to receive will be somewhere in the neighborhood of Read more [...]
The contract signed by offensive tackle Max Starks on Tuesday, will reportedly create about $2 million in salary-cap room for this year. Speaking of the Steelers salary cap, I have updated my salary cap numbers to reflect the current cap situation. These numbers are not exact, but should be close. Currently I have the team at around 9 million under the cap. Mike Bires thinks the Steelers will likely try to finalize a new deal soon with tight end Heath Miller, who’s in the last year of his contract. Hopefully this can be wrapped up by training camp. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is looking Read more [...]

The Steelers signed veteran offensive tackle Max Starks to a new four-year contract on Tuesday that will keep him with the Steelers through 2012. Financial terms of the contract were not officially released, but it is rumored to be a $26.3 million, four-year contract, according to a source. Included in the deal is $10 million in guaranteed money, the source said. We will have the official numbers to pass along in a few days.

According to the Dale Lolley blog, the Steelers are continuing contract talks with offensive tackle Max Starks and tight end Heath Miller among others. The Register-Herald has a story on offensive lineman, Doug Legursky, and his quest to make the Steelers roster again in 2009. Legursky has been working at center and has also played both guard spots. Dale Lolley also caught up with rookie defensive lineman Ra’Shon “Sonny” Harris. Harris says he got a dose of reality when the team released six players to trim its roster to 80 last week. Steelers Owner Dan Rooney is in Washington, D.C. Read more [...]
