The Steelers beat the Carolina Panthers 19-3 in the 4th and final preseason game of the 2010 season, but may have lost quarterback Byron Leftwich in the process. Below are my notes and nuggets I kept on the game along with my observations. I have much more coming on this game and am working through the night. These are initial reactions of mine as I am about to watch the game a second time and begin working up tape selections. Below are the notes I compiled throughout the game. remember these are initial reactions one time through the game.

Byron Leftwich injury looked like a whip to the knee. Early reports are he is out for the year. Looked bad and saw doctors testing knee structure on trainers table.

Once again Lawrence Timmons was all over the field starting at right outside linebacker in place of James Harrison.

Panthers played mostly second teamers to open the game.

Opening drive by Ben Roethlisberger and company was off kilter. Got better in second drive.

Stevenson Sylvester and Patrick Bailey really had nice games at linebacker. Bailey was worked at both inside and outside positions. Not sure room for Bailey on 53 with all the linebackers. Sylvester is a keeper.

Kick coverage units looked inconsistent.

Jeff Reed is still dependable at Heinz Field.

Jonathan Scott injury was a freak ankle roll when he stepped on a Panthers foot.

Scott injury could save the job of Kraig Urbik who is noticeably improved.

Keenan Lewis looked back comfortable in relief of William Gay.

Joe Burnett I think has been kidnapped.

No way Frank Summers makes the 53 man roster. I will really be shocked.

David Johnson does absolutely everything. 3rd tight end and in on all special teams. Really works hard.

I will be shocked if Nick Eason is cut.

Kyle Jolly and Dorian Brooks both got tons of work tonight. I can't wait to go through the tape.

Isaac Redman and Mewelde Moore are ready for the season. Both play a ton on special teams as well.

Thaddeus Gibson and Jason Worilds show promise, but still look confused at times.

Rookies Emmanuel Sanders and Crezdon Butler both flashed tonight. Butler made one bone head play not wrapping up, but I think both will make the 53 man roster for sure.

No doubt rookie running back Jonathan Dwyer can run, it is the little things that will keep him on the practice squad.

It is getting down to crunch time and the Steelers are quickly approaching cut down day on September 4th, when they have to get down to 53 players plus the suspended Ben Roethlisberger. At this point, I am finding it hard to believe that either Frank Summers or Jonathan Dwyer will survive the final cuts. Dwyer is a project and Summers is a project that should be over. If indeed neither stick, the Steelers head into the 2010 season with only Rashard Mendenhall, Mewelde Moore and Isaac Redman as running backs. Combined all three have 700 carries for 3157 yards in the NFL and of course Redman has no NFL carry stats as of yet. It would not be out of the question for the Steelers to sign a running back off of waivers as other teams make their roster cuts. Below are 9 running backs/fullbacks that could get walking papers on Saturday and be in a Steelers uniform for practice next Wednesday. Feel free to add your guesses in the comments below!

Marshawn Lynch - There is no real indication he will indeed be cut and he will never win the NFL Man of the Year award either, but Lynch is an inside power runner, but not likely to chip in on special teams. Price tag would have to be low.

Laurence Maroney - Pretty much the same situation as Lynch. The Patriots are could very well still let him be the opening day starter for all we know. A fresh start may do him good.

Samkon Gado - Journeyman that has bounced all around. Pretty good nose for the goal line and short yardage situations and also able to cover kicks as well.

Michael Bennett - Another special teamer that has tons of tags on his suitcase. I could think of worse than him if cut by the Raiders.

Willie Parker - Sure, several say no chance of it happening, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I would not be shocked either way. Too easy to add him here, but it is, what it is.

Garrett Wolfe - If we buy the smoke signals that the Steelers scouts have been all over the Bears preseason games, Wolfe is an easy speculation target Probably one of the best special teams players on this list as well.

John Kuhn - Doubtful, but you have to throw the name out there. It has been a reunion year after all.

Earnest Graham - Another guy who had brief success. I believe he was on the Bucs roster when Mike Tomlin coached at Tampa as well.

Jason Wright - Merely the best of the rest. I could see it happening though.

Thursday night the Steelers play the Carolina Panthers in the fourth and final preseason game of the 2010 season. Per my normal routine, I have listed below 10 things to look for Thursday heading into the game.

Manny Time On Returns? - According to head coach Mike Tomlin, rookie wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders will get his turn to show what he can do in the return game. Manny better be perfect, because any bobble might allow Tomlin to give Antonio Brown or Stefan Logan the remaining reps. Also just because Tomlin said that was the plan, means absolutely nothing.

The Amazing Crezdon - 2 years from now, Crezdon Butler may be considered the second best pick in this draft next to Maurkice Pouncey. Butler has been worked at both corner spots, nickel, dime and at safety all through camp according to reports. He is very close to perhaps grabbing the 52nd or 53rd spot on the roster and a strong game versus Carolina could seal it. We could use an heir to Ike Taylor, hopefully Butler is it.

Dwyer Details - We know Jonathan Dwyer can run, but as I have shown you, it is the other details that will likely keep him off of the 53 man roster and headed for the practice squad. I do not expect things to be fixed in just a few days, but any improvement will be noticeable for him as I expect he will get quite a long look.

Kan Keenan Komeback? - After a horrid first preseason start at left cornerback, Kennan Lewis will likely be the 2nd man in behind William Gay this week with Bryant McFadden expected to sit again. Hopefully the second year kid can get his confidence back before the season starts. An pick six would do wonders for his mental state.

Hotel Part 4 - Flozell Adams showed considerable improvement against Denver albeit against questionable foes. Thursday will be the final tune up for Adams to get the move to right side finalized. He likely will only get 12 or so snaps as well, so every one of them must be quality.

Getting Ziggy With It - After all the hype this training camp on Ziggy Hood, I was hoping to see much more than I have seen from him this preseason. He is just not flashing over the competition thus far. He has not been bad mind you, I just want to hear is name called more.

Practice Squad Lineman Audition - Hopefully Dorian Brooks and Kyle Jolly get playing time this week. They have only seen a handful of snaps on the line through 3 games with most coming against Detroit. One if not both of these guys could make the practice squad and it would be nice to have some more tape on them.

Bennis Batwich Monster Rotation - The four headed quarterback monster made up of Ben Roethlisberger, Byron Leftwich, Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch will be another surprise rotation this week for sure. Perhaps Hines Ward, Antwaan Randle El and Mewelde Moore can get an attempt in as well.

Jeff "Robo Skippy" Sepulveda - Perhaps our other two headed kicking battle will get another workout this week as well. Somewhere Roy Gerela and Craig Colquitt are shedding tears at the money these two make and neither can kick it out of the endzone.

No John Norwig or Dr. James Bradley - In case you did not know, John Norwig is the Steelers Head Athletic Trainer and Dr. James Bradley is the Steelers team Orthopedic Physician. Hopefully this is the last time you hear these names until preseason game 4 next year.

The Steelers beat the New York Giants 24-17 in the 2nd preseason game of the 2010 season. Below are my notes and nuggets I kept on the game along with my observations. I have much more coming on this game and am working through the night. These are initial reactions of mine as I am about to watch the game a second time and begin working up tape selections. Below are the notes I compiled throughout the game.

The team overall looked a little sluggish getting started. Camp finally breaking and traveling did not help.

Let us hope Ike Taylor got that out of his system. Any how I gave Taylor the unanimous decision.

Post snap penalties have to stop by start of season.

I will break down both Flozell Adams snaps and the early snaps of Jonathan Scott at right tackle, but Flozell failed again in my opinion. Athletic defensive ends can beat him on the edge with ease. Hard to see him sticking right now for the price he demanded as 2.5 million should buy a better free agent product. Scott looked adequate on the surface, but I sure would like to see him start next week to see how he fares.

Max Starks looked tired and going through the motions tonight. Trai Essex looked like Trai Essex. Enough said.

Maurkice Pouncey will be your opening day center in my opinion. I do not think he took any snaps tonight at right guard and was 3 times the center Hartwig was. What is sad is I thought Hartwig showed more fight for his job tonight. Pouncey was moving two at a time on some plays.

Byron Leftwich to Mike Wallace was a great all around play. Line blocked well, Leftwich sold it. Wallace will win all foot races.

Leftwich I think is your starter with packages mixed in for Dennis Dixon. For only 4 games you can play to both quarterbacks strengths.

I think Ben Roethlisberger will be fine. I do not think he forces that ball up in the regular season. He looked relaxed, but thought he stayed in a series too long.

Too many negative plays on the night.

Rashard Mendenhall should be able to run up the middle this year especially if Pouncey starts.

Frank Summers still is slow off the snap and leading to the hole. Still getting acclimated to the NFL.

Brett Kiesel is hot and cold at times. Will certainly need snaps off this season.

Bryant McFadden is a better left corner than right corner. Not sure the reasoning he was moved over there after Taylor was ejected other than to get Keenan Lewis into the game earlier and not take snaps away from BMac.

Troy Polamalu showed some burst, he also showed he still can miss a tackle or two. Regardless, he is still the best strong safety in the league.

I liked the effort to get the ball more to Antwaan Randle El this week along with Heath Miller. These two will get plenty of chances to contribute this year. Miller may even lead the team in catches. Miller did wiff on a block. It happens.

Outside linebacker play tonight was pedestrian, especially from the rookies Thaddeus Gibson and Jason Worilds. Oh, and wave goodbye to Patrick Bailey. God forbid he ever had to start at left or right outside linebacker.

There is nothing wrong with the motor of Lawrence Timmons. Larry Foote and James Farrior looked more focused this week as well. Inside linebacker play was good overall on the night.

I think Nick Eason is still ahead of Sunny Harris. I will look closer in the next 8 times through the game, but Harris has not taken the roster spot in my opnion.

Will Allen is an upgrade over Tyrone Carter from last year. His recognition and quickness are still there and he is great on special teams.

Joe Burnett caught him one. Corners need more plays like that. Burnett does get cauight out of position at times.

Daniel Sepulveda did an adequate job kicking off. I need to time the hang times though before I can give a true assesment. He did make a huge tackle though. You want that to happen never though.

Antonio Brown did a great job on returns. Stefan Logan still seems adequate as well. It will come down to the progress of Brown as a receiver in my opinion. I think Emmanuel Sanders will get his chance returning next week in Denver. Logan needs to really make himself uncut-able and has yet to do it.

I really was hoping Ziggy Hood will be a little more dominating than he has been in the first two games. I am not too worried though.

Casey Hampton can still plug up the middle.

Tony Hills on the surface looked good again in the snaps I was watching him specifically. The tape will not lie though. I reserve my judgment until I get a closer look.

I do not see how Kraig Urbik makes the 53 man roster without an injury. 3rd round pick wasted.

I can do without seeing Byron Leftwich run. He makes Dan Marino look like Usain Bolt.

I like the way Dwayne Wright runs. It will not matter though.

Mewelde Moore is one of the best blitz pickup backs around. Fearless and will take 3rd down snaps away from Mendenhall again.

Isaac Redman has become a complete running back. His work on special teams is improving.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced today in his weekly press conference that rookie 6th round draft pick running back Jonathan Dwyer is doubtful to play Saturday night versus the Giants with a shoulder injury he suffered against Detroit last week. Dwyer has not participated in the hitting portions of practice this week and continues to miss valuable practice time in the process. This is the second injury since camp started for Dwyer, who by all reports was a little out of shape upon arriving at Latrobe. Dwyer first battled a hamstring strain right as camp started and was just getting back in the flow when he hurt his shoulder last week.

Dwyer is no longer battling for a spot on the 53 man roster, but is now in jeopardy of not even being healthy enough to make the practice squad. If Dwyer can not get back healthy in the next couple of weeks, the Steelers might place him on the reserve PUP list or even on injured reserve. Both of those situations are extreme, but all players on the practice squad need to be able to contribute. When asked about Dwyer on Thursday, Tomlin said, "The reality is that he’s not on the field so he’s not helping himself."

As it looks right now the Steelers will likely only carry 3 running backs and one fullback when the season starts. Rashard Mendenhall, Mewelde Moore and Isaac Redman are all locks at that running back spot and the Dwyer injury certainly helps the chances of Frank Summers getting the fullback spot. The Steelers could also watch the final cut down transaction wire to see if any running back peaks their interest. The name of Willie Parker continues to surface should he be released from the Redskins, but Ed Bouchette reported a few days ago that sources told him the Steelers have no interest in bringing back Parker, so that should end that speculation.

Everyone knows Dwyer can run North and South, but the knock on him is the other things that go along with being a complete running back in the NFL. The best thing for Dwyer right now is to spend a full year on the practice squad and give it another shot next year in camp. Dwyer goes by the nickname of Diesel, but for now it appears he needs a serious tune-up. The Steelers have a perfect mechanic in running backs coach Kirby Wilson and I think he can get the Diesel running on all cylinders by mid season or by training camp 2011 at the latest. Regardless, Dwyer needs to get out of the tub and on the road before anything can happen.

By Chris Gates

Surprisingly enough, fumbles weren’t directly responsible for any of the seven losses the Steelers suffered in 2009.

Not one loss was the result of a fumble going the other way for points to win the game.

Nevertheless, fumbles happened frequently and the 2010 preseason has been no different. Running backs Rashard Mendenhall and Mewelde Moore — both expected to carry much of the load in the Steelers ground attack — fumbled balls away in the first half against Detroit Saturday.

Isaac Redman also appeared to fumble, but video review determined he was down before the ball came out.

After 2009 — season plagued by mistakes — Saturday was really disappointing to watch. Especially when you consider Mendenhall, who knows the one major knock on him is how frequently he puts the ball on the ground.

Wasn’t he constantly carrying a ball around to correct this problem? That sure worked.

The running game has to be the Steelers strength. It has to be the one thing this team can rely on.

The Steelers will play at least four games without Ben Roethlisberger — maybe six — and, by the looks of it, his fill-in will be shaky.

Byron Leftwich was anything but impressive in his start, completing 6 of 10 passes for just 43 yards. Dennis Dixon came in and was exciting to watch but fled the pocket too early at times because of nerves and inexperience. And keep in mind: he did his damage against Detroit’s reserves.

Neither quarterback will light defenses up throwing the ball. So clearly the running backs need to step up.

Situations such as Mendenhall fumbling inside the Minnesota 10-yard line in Week 7 only to see Brett Favre march 18 plays down to the opposite end of the field can’t happen. Lucky for Mendenhall, Brett Keisel sacked Favre and forced a fumble that Lamarr Woodley picked up and ran 77 yards for a touchdown.

Neither can a situation like Stefan Logan’s in Week 4 when he fumbled a punt that was returned for a touchdown by San Diego to cut the Steelers’ lead to 28-14. Lucky for him the Chargers couldn’t pull off an unthinkable comeback in that second half, falling one touchdown short, 35-28.

And it’s lucky for Mendenhall, Moore and Redman that it’s just preseason game No. 1. They have a lot of growing up to do in a short period of time.

The real Week 1 isn’t far away.

And when it gets here, those fumbles could be more damaging than they were in 2009.

The Steelers beat the Detroit Lions 23-7 in the 1st preseason game of the 2010 season. Below are my notes and nuggets I kept on the game of my observations. I have much more coming on this game and am working through the night.

Isaac Redman ran consistent and hard, especially between the tackles. Also improved greatly at pass blocking. He should have no problem making the 53 man roster.

Maurkice Pouncey is the real deal. Got lots of time at center and can move some flesh as well as get to the second level. Played some right guard late in the game, but looks like he could very well start week 1 at center. Very impressive for first game and had a few bone crushing blocks.

Maurkice Pouncey with a slobber knocker block.

Maurkice Pouncey with a slobber knocker block.

Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown both played well above the line. Sanders understands that Steelers receivers have to block and looks willing to do so. Brown is excellent after the catch. Sanders will make the 53 man roster for sure and Brown made a week a strong case as well.

Emmanuel Sanders blocking.

Emmanuel Sanders blocking.

Dennis Dixon benefited greatly from yards after the catch, but looks a ton calmer. Led a couple of good drives and knows when to use his legs. Do not read too much into his stats tonight, but it certainly was above the line. I am not ready to declare him the starter as it is way too early. Let the coaches do their job.

Keenan Lewis and Joe Burnett are making a leap it seems. Game seems to be slowing down. Touchdown on Lewis could of been offensive pass interference. Both showing great signs thus far.

Tony Hills! Yes Tony Hills. Showed up on a bad ankle and played well at left tackle. Not a starter by any means, but at least he is fighting for his roster spot.

Mewelde Moore is a guy you want on this roster one more year. Bone crushing block on the Dixon run that almost went for a touchdown and he is still an excellent special teams player and tackler.

MeMo doing what MeMo does.

MeMo doing what MeMo does.

1st team defense moved around well. Ryan Clark intercepted a tipped ball. Troy Polamalu seems to still have his quickness.

Thaddeus Gibson and Stevenson Sylvester seem to semi understand things. They are a long ways from starter ready, but the talent is there. Gibson got sucked in a few times, but that happens. Showed he can recover quickly. Sylvester is quick to the ball.

Ball security by the running backs. Enough said here.

Rashard Mendenhall still looks timid at times and the fumble was pure carelessness. Week 2 I expect much better.

Jeff Reed still can not kickoff deep. Had a touchback, but I think it was helped by a tail wind. Regardless his kicks were inconsistent Reed was money on his field goals.

Flozell Adams needs more snaps at right tackle. Seems to be struggling mostly with his foot work on pass rushes. Jonathan Scott actually had a better night than the Hotel.

Ike Taylor needs to hit the tackle dummies.

Jonathan Dwyer can not make the club in the tub. Already will get limited reps in the preseason. Shoulder injury forced him out again. Needs to get lower as he is taking too many square hits.

Anthony Madison continues to have his name called on special teams.

Patrick Bailey looked lost at outside linebacker a few plays. I will be surprised if he makes the roster.

Keyaron Fox can sniff out a ball carrier. Underrated linebacker.

No huge special teams gaffs. Enough said.

Players seem coached up good overall.

We all knew running back Willie Parker would not be re-signed this past offseason. The writing was on the wall and he clearly is not the same running back he once was. The league must of thought the same thing as it showed with the lukewarm reception he got in free agency. The Redskins ended up being the landing spot for Parker as he signed a one year contract laced with incentives and only a $850,000 base salary.

The Redskins posted their first updated training camp depth chart on its Web site Monday afternoon, the same chart that hangs in the team's locker room. According to it, Parker appears slated to enter the team's first preseason game as the Redskins No. 4 running back, behind Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Ryan Torain. Parker is no special teams warrior, so as it stands right now, Willie could be back on the streets again in a few weeks looking for a job.

The Steelers current running back depth chart has very limited NFL game experience and as it looks right now will consist of 3rd year man Rashard Mendenhall, veteran third down back Mewelde Moore and undrafted practice squad hold over Isaac Redman. Rookie draft pick Jonathan Dwyer can't really be thrown in the mix right now as he has missed early time in camp with a hamstring injury and is in a battle to merely make the 53 man roster at this point. He may be better suited for the practice squad as it looks right now, but there is quite a ways to go before that decision needs to be made.

Back to Fast Willie. It begs asking whether or not the Steelers would be interested in bringing back Parker should he be released from the Redskins in 4 plus weeks. Parker might be a bit more humbled after his free agent experience and be willing to come back on a one year deal to back up Mendenhall. Parker has a bad taste in his mouth, but clearly understands know he is no longer an every down starter in the NFL. He does however know the Steelers system and could help add some veteran presence at the position if he tucks his pride down deep.

Do I think it will happen? A little over a year ago, I wrote about how he would be running out of town following the season. I am not willing to say he will now be running back to the Steelers by no means, but it makes the most sense if indeed the Steelers are not happy with the depth at the position. Regardless, I do not think this post will be the last one you read before week 1 that links Parker back to the Steelers. Stay tuned! Poll question below.
