In 2005, the Pittsburgh Steelers won a Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks with receivers Hines Ward, Antwaan Randle El, and Cedrick Wilson. Again in 2008, the Steelers captured their sixth Lombardi against another NFC West opponent in the Arizona Cardinals with Ward, Santonio Holmes, and Nate Washington. Wilson, Randle El, and Washington were solid, Holmes was clutch, and Ward is a future Hall of Famer. Outside of Washington, none of these guys were burners who could successfully get vertical, but they were all reliable and able to be depended on for earning crucial first

Below are the Steelers coverage stats for the week 5 Sunday afternoon game against the Tennessee Titans. They are broken down by play and include down and distance, line of scrimmage, direction, yards gained, yards after catch, personnel the offense used, defensive package, number of pass rushers and whether or not the defense blitzed on the play.
The Steelers pass defense was solid as they used quite a bit of dime in passing situations. On non-penalized plays, the Steelers allowed 29 completions on 49 attempts for a 59% completion percentage. While they gave up 262 yards passing, the defense

Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau had a great scheme on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans and he made sure it featured his best play maker in the lead role. I suggested in my 7 things to look for article that the Steelers should utilize Troy Polamalu down in the box more against the Titans in hopes of providing some run support and help out against the short routes of a tight end or a running back scheme. What LeBeau ended up doing was to break out the dime package (big nickel) and use Polamalu more as a dime back/linebacker on Sunday.
The Steelers played their normal base defense

The Steelers are half way to playing with house money for the first four games after slipping past Atlanta last week in week 1 of the NFL season. The win was huge and takes a ton of pressure off of the team immediately as they head out for their first road game of 2010. A win in Nashville would be epic and put the Steelers in a fantastic position heading into week 3. Per my usual here, below are 7 keys to the game that I believe the Steelers need to focus on to beat the Titans and a game prediction at the end.

All of the Steelers brass is down in Orlando for the NFL owners meetings and the media is doing their best to catch back up with Art Rooney II, Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin. Tomlin shed light on many subjects, on Monday, that included the rumors of Bruce Arians being fired, running the football more in 2010, Dennis Dixon and Antwaan Randle El. The biggest statement was that he intends to find and use a fullback that can block like Dan Kreider did.
Scott Brown has a complete Q & A of the talk with Mike Tomlin on his blog.

The NFL announced today that the Steelers will receive three compensatory picks for the upcoming 2010 NFL draft. Just as I predicted the Steelers will get two 5th round picks and one 7th round pick for the 2009 free agent loses of wide receiver Nate Washington, cornerback Bryant McFadden and quarterback Byron Leftwich in free agency last year. Washington and McFadden both qualified as 5th round compensatory picks, while Leftwich qualified for a 7th round compensatory pick. The Steelers currently have 10 draft picks they can use in the NFL draft.

The Steelers will find out Tuesday how many compensatory picks they will receive in this year's draft. You can view my projections I did on our picks a while ago as they are expected to receive picks for losing wide receiver Nate Washington, cornerback Bryant McFadden and quarterback Byron Leftwich in free agency last year.
Not surprising in the least is that the word came out on Sunday that the Steelers have a pre draft visit set with Idaho guard Mike Iupati. Iupati will be a popular guy prior to the draft as several teams will have him as one of their 30 players to visit with.

A few people have emailed me concerning how many compensatory draft picks the Steelers will be rewarded for the 2010 draft. You have to start first with what they lost free agency wise last offseason. The Steelers lost what looks to be three qualifying players in free agency and they did not sign any that qualified as replacements for those lost players. The three players they lost that should qualify were, cornerback Bryant McFadden, wide receiver Nate Washington and quarterback Byron Leftwich. All three should qualify. As far as the rounds go for the compensatory draft picks rewarded, below are

Head coach Mike Tomlin said on Thursday that second-year receiver Limas Sweed does not have the inside track on the No. 3 wide receiver spot and in fact said the No. 3 receiver job vacated by Nate Washington is wide open. When asked who else is in the mix, Tomlin said, "All the guys other than Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes."
Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith, nose tackle Casey Hampton, linebacker James Farrior safety Troy Polamalu and safety Ryan Clark were all absent from this week's OTA session.

Sunday will mark the third time this season the Steelers and Ravens have played this season. This year, the Steelers swept both of the previous games – barely. They won in overtime 23-20 on September 29 and then 13-9 on December 14. If the Steelers win Sunday, it would be only the 12th time in the 56 instances that teams have met three times in a season since 1970 that a three-game sweep occurred.
This game will match two teams that are almost mirror images of each other. Both teams rely heavily on their defenses and both offenses try to establish the running game and use the passing game

The San Diego Chargers visit Heinz Field to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers this evening. The Chargers will likely be without the services of running back LaDainian Tomlinson and will rely on a mixture of running backs Darren Sproles and Michael Bennett. The Steelers run defense is ranked second in the league, allowing just 80.2 yards a game. Quarterback Philip Rivers will look to work the ball into tight end Antonio Gates underneath and receivers Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers along the corners. They key to the Chargers on offense will be to get Sproles involved in the screen and keep the
