Season 2, Episode 74 of The Terrible Podcast is up and David Todd and get the Super Bowl preview show started by addressing a few reader emails to start off with. Next David and I run down the list of finalist again for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and give our final predictions on who we think will be in the class of 2012 when it is announced Saturday. Steelers Six From Around The Web – February 1st – Polamalu 6th Most Marketable NFL Player Edition

Troy Polamalu is the 6th most marketable player in the NFL, according to an exclusive survey of sports business execs, analysts and media members conducted by Street and Smith’s Sports Business Daily. Ben Roethlisberger finished tied for 20th on the list. US Ambassador to Ireland and President Emeritus of the Pittsburgh Steelers Dan Rooney has a Youtube video message for the Irish aimed at explaining the sport to the Irish. Gerry Dulac thinks the interview given to Todd Haley was made very public for a reason and thus he thinks the chances of Haley getting the offensive coordinator Read more [...]

The Rooney-Mara Connection

With the New York Giants in the Super Bowl this year, there will undoubtedly be some speculation regarding whether or not the Rooney family, majority owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be rooting for them against the New England Patriots or not.  The reason:  The Rooneys and Maras have a connection that is steeped in family connectedness. The relationship between Art Rooney “The Chief” and Tim Mara goes as far back as the late 1920s and early 1930s, and it didn’t necessarily relate to football, although both men were creating franchises that would go on to produce World Championship teams. Art Read more [...]

If Blue-collar Identity Means Running More, I Am Not Buying It

The recent report by ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen suggest that Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II did not retain offensive coordinator Bruce Arians for 2012 because Rooney wants the team to shift the offense back toward its blue-collar identity of years past. Well, what exactly does he mean by blue-collar identity? That could mean several things, run more, work ethic, etc. I know what Mortensen is likely implying here and of course the media and fan base will jump right to the idea of running more as he hints in his report. First, there remains a ton of speculation to the Read more [...]

Super Bowl XLVI – New England Patriots Versus New York Giants

Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis is now set as the New England Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 in the AFC Championship game earlier in the day and the New York Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 in the late NFC Championship game. It now sets up a rematch of Super Bowl XLII that the Giants won 17-14 in Glendale, Arizona. Both championship games were very entertaining and each were decided basically by one play. In New England, Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff missed a 32-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in the game to give the Patriots the win. The Ravens took possession of the Read more [...]

AFC & NFC Championship Game Previews & Picks

Championship Sunday is here as the Baltimore Ravens take on the New England Patriots in the early AFC Championship game and the New York Giants take on the San Francisco 49ers in the late NFL Championship game. Here are my previews of both games and predictions for each. AFC Championship Game: Ravens at Patriots Preview: The Ravens want to slow this game with running back Ray Rice in hopes of keeping the Patriots high flying offense of Tom Brady off the field much like the Pittsburgh Steelers were able to do earlier this season. Ball control and time of possession will not be enough for the Read more [...]

Ryan Clark Will Try To Change Number To 21 If Mewelde Moore Does Not Return

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark announced on Twitter tonight that he will attempt to change his number from 25 to 21 if running back Mewelde Moore does not return in 2012. Moore will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The number switch is a tribute to Sean Taylor, a good friend and former teammate of Clark’s when he was with the Washington Redskins. Taylor died from critical injuries due to gunshots suffered during a home invasion back in November of 2007. Taylor was just 24 years of age. Clark honors the memory of Taylor by wearing 21 during Steelers practices and has Read more [...]

Don’t Look Back; Look Ahead

By Jeremy Hritz Right now, it still hurts for Steelers fans. Two of our most hated opponents will battle for the AFC crown that we proudly wore last year. And in the NFC, we have to watch the other hated Harbaugh and the Eli Manning-led New York Giants. While Sunday will no doubt be agonizing as it reminds us of what could have been, it is time to move on. And what better way to do so than taking a closer look at the 2012-2013 Steelers’ opponents. Opponents’ 2011 Records: 103-105 (.495) 2011 Playoff Opponents on 2012 Schedule: 4 – Baltimore, Cincinnati, Denver, New York Giants Divisional Read more [...]

The Terrible Podcast – Divisional Round Talk Plus Steelers Roster Talk Episode

Season 2, Episode 69 of The Terrible Podcast is up and with David Todd back in the co-host chair we talk about the playoff games this past weekend in the Divisional Round and continue to cry about the Steelers loss to the Denver Broncos in the Wild Card round. It is still very hard to get over and will be for some time. The first half of the show we talk about how close the Houston Texans were to beating the Baltimore Ravens despite their turnovers and how San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith answered the critics against the New Orleans Saints. Although I did not pick the New York Giants Read more [...]

Steelers Six From Around The Web – January 17th – Roethlisberger Almost A Giant Edition

Peter King wrote in his MMQB piece how the New York Giants would have been fine drafting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger if San Diego Chargers GM A.J. Smith had played hardball with then-Giants GM Ernie Accorsi as the clock wound down on the fourth overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft. Hines Ward was on NFL Total Access yesterday and talked about losing to the Denver Broncos and how he still wants to continue to play for the Steelers. Tackle Marcus Gilbert talked with Teresa Varley of Steelers.com at the end of the season about what he learned his rookie season. Mike Bires asked wide receiver Read more [...]

Divisional Round Week TOX Stats – 2011 Season

The Divisional Round of the 2011-2012 playoffs are now in the books and the TOX stat did not let us down this week as the winning teams all had a plus 2 TOX number or better. The Baltimore Ravens let the Houston Texans beat themselves with the 4 turnovers and the Ravens defense allowed just 1 explosive play which was a 28 yard run by Arian Foster. Texans quarterback T.J. Yates could not stretch the field and made several ill-advised throws deep. The Texans were still in this game up until the end, but could never make the big play when they needed it. The New York Giants used a good balance Read more [...]

It’s Time For Some Time

By Jeremy Hritz There is going to be much debate moving forward about which current Pittsburgh Steelers free agents will return to the for the 2012 season. The debate will be much less about which soon to be free agents on other NFL teams will join the black and gold next year. Historically, the Steelers are wary of signing coveted free agents, opting for mid-tier to somewhat above average guys such as Jerricho Cotchery this year, or a few years back, Cedrick Wilson. Some of these offseason free agents have worked out well for the Steelers in longtime captain James Farrior, who came from the Read more [...]

Wild Card Week TOX Stats – 2011 Season

The Wild Card weekend of the playoff has come and gone and it is time to look at the TOX results from the 4 games. The Houston Texans had a plus 5 TOX and easily took care of the Cincinnati Bengals. The New York Giants had a plus 3 TOX against the Atlanta Falcons and easily won. The Pittsburgh Steelers did not reach the magic plus 2 number. Had they had one more explosive play or turnover, or allowed one less of each, they likely win that game against the Denver Broncos. How fitting that the final play was explosive as the Steelers were plus 2 at that point. The New Orleans Saints and the Detroit Read more [...]
