Number of underclassmen to be granted draft eligibility sets record

With the NFL Combines closely approaching it is interesting to note that the number of underclassmen who’ve been granted draft eligibility is up for 2012. The 2012 NFL Draft will be held April 26-28 this year.  According to the NFL, 65 players met the NFL’s three-year eligibility rule, a jump from just 56 in 2011.  The new numbers show that this year’s numbers set an all-time high for underclassmen filing their written applications renouncing their eligibility by the Sunday deadline. With movement in NFL team offices across the league, it will be an important year for general managers as they Read more [...]

Is Aaron Williams Worth A Nickel To The Steelers?

I talked about Texas cornerback Curtis Brown the other day and today wanted to focus in on another Texas cornerback, Aaron Williams, in relation to the Steelers. Back in late December, Williams announced his decision to skip his senior season at Texas to enter the 2011 NFL Draft and since then the biggest questions that surround him is if he is best suited as a corner or free safety at the next level. Williams certainly has the measurables of a coveted first round cornerback outside of his 40 time. At the NFL Combine in February, Williams ran in the low 4.5 range, but recently improved that number Read more [...]

Steelers Mike Tomlin Present For Miami Hurricanes Pro Day

It should be no surprise that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is in South Florida today at the University of Miami Pro Day. Tomlin is for sure taking a closer look at cornerback Brandon Harris. Harris had a good showing at the NFL Combine recently and is certainly one of the top 5 corners in this years draft class. Harris most likely would contribute as a nickel corner first for any team that drafts him, with hopes of eventually moving outside. The Steelers most certainly will be in the market for one, if not two corners in the draft depending how free agency shakes out with Ike Taylor and William Read more [...]

Bettis was checking out the bowling alley as he is planning to open one in Pittsburgh. The big news on Monday was the announcement that former Steelers safety Carnell Lake was named the new Steelers defensive backs coach. Steeler Nation welcomes him back with open arms. Top 2010 NFL Cornerbacks NFL Combine Results Compared To 2011 Top CB Prospects

After every NFL Combine is over, everyone immediately starts looking to the combine results as a form of measurement of future success. We have seen time and time again how these numbers are often forced to hold too much water in measuring the potential success. With the Steelers certainly having a need at the cornerback position early in the 2011 NFL draft, I thought it would be good to research how the current top cornerbacks performed during their combine or pro days to sort of debunk just looking at these results. I started by first looking at the top 20 all-around cornerbacks from 2010 Read more [...]

Steelers Six From Around The Web – Thursday March 3rd – Hire Bruce Arians Edition

On Wednesday Mike Tomlin interviewed former Steelers safety Carnell Lake for the open defensive backs coaching job. Tomlin has been in no hurry to fill the position since Ray Horton left to take the Cardinals defensive coordinator position. Lake coached the defensive backs at UCLA for just one season as he stepped down because of family reasons. In other Steelers not so earth shattering coaching news, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians signed his one-year contract with the Steelers on Wednesday. Arians was promoted from wide receivers coach to his current position in 2007. Suck it haters. lol Read more [...]

Steelers Six From Around The Web – Tuesday March 1st – Get Your Stinkin’ Mind Right Edition

Our rumor about Hines Ward we posted last night has been confirmed. Ward will be on season 12 of Dancing with the Stars. Here is his bio page on the ABC official site. James Walker looks at what the Ike Taylor asking price might be. Taylor will be considered an unrestricted free agent in a few more days, but until the labor situation is solved, there will be no free agency so it buys the Steelers a little time at least. The money Stanford Routt got recently makes you wonder indeed how much Ike could get on the open market. I hope we do not have to find out. Teresa Varley continues her “At Read more [...]

Dale Lolley blogged his early thoughts on the Steelers upcoming NFL draft needs and pretty much thinks the Steelers top targets will be cornerbacks Jimmy Smith or Aaron Williams. On Sunday, Mike Bires gave his thoughts on the Steelers placing the franchise tag on outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley. Mike Wallace & Emmanuel Sanders Combine Numbers

A few people are asking about the combine stats for both Mike Wallace and Emmanuel Sanders. Seems several are trying to compare the two which is wrong to do. I aim to please so here are the combine results I have on both below. Sanders is a bit smaller as you can see and as good of leaper as he is, Wallace still out leaped him. Sanders will be groomed as a slot guy, a number 3 receiver so to speak. This year though expect him to be #5 or #6 on the depth chart for the start of the season.
