Recapping Rooney – No Real Surprises

Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II sat down with a few members of the Pittsburgh media on Tuesday for a half hour interview to discuss the Steelers past season and look ahead to 2012. You can read the question and answers here on the Post-Gazette blog. When you read through everything there were not too many surprises if you ask me, but I will go over the main talking points below with my own comments and view points added to a few of the things that Rooney said. Even though we do not usually learn too much from these interviews every offseason, it is just good to hear some of the things Read more [...]

Steelers Could Have 2012 Salary Cap Wiggle Room With Woodley & Timmons Contracts

When you look at the daunting salary cap issues that the Pittsburgh Steelers have facing them in 2012, there seems to be some wiggle room on at least a couple of the high priced contracts of linebackers LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons and it comes as a result of how the new contracts each signed prior to the start of the 2011 season were structured. In 2012 Woodley has a $5.5 million roster bonus due to go along with his $3.4 million base salary and his amortized portion of his signing bonus which is $2.6 million. His 2012 cap hit is currently scheduled to be $11.5 million. The Steelers Read more [...]

The Terrible Podcast – Falcons Pregame Episode

Season 2, Episode 10 of The Terrible Podcast is up and David Todd and I discuss what has been a very quiet camp for the Steelers thus far. Fortunately there has only been one significant injury (to 7th round pick RB Baron Batch) and very little of the off-field drama that we have seen in seasons past. With such a veteran roster there really is only one starting position up for grabs, right guard, and probably only 3-5 roster spots on the 53-man roster open to competition. While it certainly makes for less news and intrigue, I’m sure the Steelers would be prefer it be like this every year. Since Read more [...]

Omar Khan Strikes Again With New Timmons Contract

The new 6-year contract with inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons was announced by the Steelers on Tuesday and once again Steelers Business & Football Administration Coordinator Omar Khan has proven why he is the best in the business at getting smart deals done. Timmons was heading into his final year under contract and was still owed around $1.4 million or so on his rookie deal. His new deal tacks on 5 more years now and it includes $18 million in total bonus of which only $12 million is guaranteed. $10 million of the new deal was signing bonus with another $7 million of the $18 million bonus Read more [...]

Calming The Panic Of The Steelers Still Being Over The Salary Cap

Steeler Nation is panicking this morning over the tweet by Adam Schefter that the Steelers are still roughly $11 million over the salary cap. The reason why that number is so high is presumably because the Steelers have not made the restructures official of players like Ben Roethlisberger, James Harrison, Chris Kemoeatu, Brett Keisel and Heath Miller. Had these players signed their restructures, they would not have been allowed to practice until the proposed date of the new ratified CBA, which is still scheduled to take place today at some point. In addition, the only re-signings the Steelers Read more [...]

Hali Contract Right In Line With What Woodley May Receive

Last night it was announced that the Chiefs signed outside linebacker Tamba Hali to a 5-year $60 million dollar contract with $35 million of it guaranteed. It is unknown early on how the contract is structured, but it most certainly will lower the 2011 tag charge of $10 million that Hali has been walking around with. If that scenario sounds familiar, it is because it is. Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley is walking around with the same tag and the Steelers reportedly have opened up negotiations with him on a long term deal, but it is nowhere close to getting done yet. “We just have Read more [...]

Steelers 2007 Free Agency Timeline Of Alan Faneca Contract Talks

There seems to be several misunderstandings out there of the timeline of events that eventually led to the Steelers not re-signing guard Alan Faneca and letting him walk following the 2007 season. I wrote a few days ago that it was a good decision based on the money wanted by Faneca and the attitude he had. I have assembled a timeline of the offseason prior to the start of the 2007 season below so everyone has a firm grasp of how those events transpired. It should be noted and no surprise that the Steelers like to extend their potential free agents the offseason before they are to enter the Read more [...]

Could Delayed Free Agency Drive The Price Tag Up On Ike Taylor?

The 2011 NFL Draft will take place just two weeks from today and it looks almost certain that the free agency signing period, if there is one, will take place after the draft. During a normal offseason the signing of the bulk of the higher profile free agent players has already taken place and teams can then fill in their needs and holes on the roster on draft day. This year it looks like the process will be flip-flopped and several teams will be forced to draft blind so to speak, not knowing the status of their own free agents as well as others. The Steelers certainly fall into this area with Read more [...]

Clock Ticking On Pouncey And Worilds Contracts

With just 10 days left until players report to Latrobe, the Steelers still do not have their top two draft picks under contract as of yet as Maurkice Pouncey and Jason Worilds remain unsigned. Should that be of a concern? Absolutely not as Vladimir Ducasse of the Jets remains the only player signed of any of the draft picks selected in the first two rounds of the 2010 draft. The biggest factor right now with the 1st and 2nd rounders is the uncertainty with the NFL and the CBA. Players and agents are wanting big deals and owners are wanting not to over pay. When the dominoes start falling, they Read more [...]

Steelers Six From Around The Web – Friday June 4th – Big Oprah Couch Needed For Big Ben Edition

Jason La Canfora speculates that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger could have a sit down type interview with Oprah Winfrey or Larry King to get all of the laundry aired out before training camp. I think the Winfrey or King angle is a bit over the top myself, but perhaps a Jim Gray or Jeremy Schaap taped interview would be more in line. Roethlisberger only took two of the many questions the media had on Thursday. Ed Bouchette says that quarterback Dennis Dixon has not practiced with the first team much of any and it has become obvious that Byron Leftwich will open the season as the starting Read more [...]

Steelers Six From Around The Web – Tuesday January 19th

Steelers GM and Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert sat down with Bob Labriola from Steelers.com for part one of a candid interview. It looks as if the Steelers will be able to keep executive and salary cap guru, Omar Khan, as Green Bay Packers director of football operations John Schneider has been chosen as the new general manager of the Seattle Seahawks, league and team sources said. Even though the Steelers will keep Khan, defensive back coach Ray Horton could be the next defensive coordinator of the University of Houston after interviewing with the school last Friday. Steelers Six From Around The Web – Wednesday July 1st

Steelers running back coach, Kirby Wilson, told the B.C. Lions player personnel director Roy Shivers they can forget about getting running back, Stefan Logan back. “Kirby told me to forget about him,” Shivers said at the Lions training camp Friday. “They like him and they’ve moved him to slotback. The idea is that they can get him the ball in space and everything. He’s opening some eyes. The veterans have gravitated toward him because he’s shown stuff in mini-camps. And they plan to use him as a kick returner, too. Kirby told me, ‘You’re probably not going to get him back.’ ” Dale Lolley gives Read more [...]
