Every year heading into the final cut-down week fans are curious as to what players are eligible to be placed on the Steelers practice squad. In the new CBA the rule has not changed as far as the player eligibility goes. As always, every draft pick and undrafted free agent are eligible as these players are rookies. The biggest question always revolves around players that are not rookies that may have served time on a practice squad or have even made a 53 man roster for a short period of time. Below is the rule on practice squad eligibility and a list of the players that are currently on the bottom

The Steelers are going to lose another practice squad body as rookie defensive lineman Al Woods will be signed off the Steelers practice squad by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after having to place their own rookie defensive tackle Brian Price on injured reserve. By NFL rules, Woods must be signed to the Bucs 53 man roster. Woods, originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round, was signed to the Steelers practice squad on September 7th after he was released by the Saints after training camp. He was termed a project and expected to be groomed as a 3-4 defensive end. Earlier in the day

The Steelers filled the opening on their practice squad on Tuesday as they signed linebacker Chris Ellis to their practice squad. The Buffalo Bills drafted Ellis in the third round of the 2008 NFL draft and waived him last month. He played defensive end at Virginia Tech while in college before Jason Worilds assumed the position. The Steelers will try to see if he can continue his transition into an outside 3-4 linebacker. The Steelers had an opening on the practice squad because they signed Steve McLendon on Saturday from the 8 man squad and released rookie linebacker Thaddeus Gibson to make room

As expected, the Steelers signed defensive tackle Steve McLendon back to the practice squad Monday morning after he cleared waivers following his release on Friday. McLendon was signed off the practice squad for the second time before the week 4 Ravens game as veteran backup nose tackle Chris Hoke was forced to miss the game with a MCL knee sprain. McLendon was active for th e Ravens game, but did not play any snaps on defense this time up. He only contributed on special teams in week 4 as starting nose tackle Casey Hampton took all of the snaps at nose tackle in non nickel defense formations.

As expected, the Steelers signed defensive tackle Steve McLendon back to the 53 man roster on Saturday from the practice squad and placed quarterback Dennis Dixon on injured reserve. McLendon will backup Casey Hampton at nose tackle Sunday versus the Ravens as Chis Hoke will sit out with a MCL sprain. Dixon was expected to be sidelined several more weeks following meniscus surgery on the knee he injured against the titans in week 2. The Steelers were hoping not to have to make the decision with Dixon until the suspension of starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was over, but when Hoke went down

Now that we have confirmed the Al Woods practice squad signing, I have done a little research on him and compiled a few nuggets and video on him.
First you can read New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton comments on the release of Woods.
The Saints traded with the Cardinals and moved up to take the former LSU standout defensive tackle in the 2010 draft by trading their pick in the fourth round and their sixth-round pick.
You can read his Saints bio right here while it is still up. Make sure to hit the MORE button to expand it.

A league source reports that the Steelers have signed former New Orleans Saints fourth-round defensive tackle Al Woods to their practice squad. It is unclear who was released from the practice squad if indeed Woods was signed today. Either Steve McLendon or Doug Worthington are the likeliest candidates as they both play defensive line. McLendon makes even more sense as he may still be slowed by the knee injury he suffered early on in camp, plus Worthington was a draft pick you would not think the Steelers would be willing to give up on just yet. We will get to the bottom of this soon as we are

A reader emailed me this afternoon and wanted to know of the 75 players on the active roster, which ones are eligible to be signed to the practice squad and what constitutes eligibility. First we go to the NFL rules on this:
What makes a player eligible for an NFL practice squad?
(a) The practice squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad: (i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL experience; and (ii) free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games during

The Steelers made a practice squad move on Tuesday as they released guard Jonathan Palmer and signed wide receiver Jason Chery. Chery was needed to help take reps because of the injuries to Hines Ward and Mike Wallace, who may be limited in the early week of practice. The release of Palmer also signified that guard Chris Kemoeatu got a good week of rest and should be ready to go this week versus Baltimore.

Steelers practice squad center Doug Legursky signed a two-year deal with the Steelers shortly after the team returned from Tampa Bay. The deal is predicated on Legursky making the active roster. The former Marshall Thundering Herd offensive lineman spent the 2008 season on the practice squad, but apparently made a good impression. “It’s just the standard two-year contract,” Legursky said. “I still have to make the team. I mean, they can cut you any time they want. But I plan on doing my best to make that roster.”
