Steelers Six From Around The Web – Friday October 21st – Long Ball Edition

Yesterday I had a look at the long ball stats of Ben Roethlisberger from 21+ yards and Pro Football Focus has a look this morning at all quarterbacks in the league from 20+ yards. The 1 extra yard does not change the fact that Roethlisberger has had accuracy issues this year with his deep passes. Speaking of Roethlisberger, he joined Jim Rome this week on his television show to talk about the Steelers 4-2 start and the preferential treatment that quarterbacks get from the referees. Video is below. Left tackle Max Starks recently sat down with Teresa Varley for a long interview on the latest Read more [...]

Season 2, Episode 32 of The Terrible Podcast is up and since David Todd is still out in Las Vegas so Nick Richetta once again gets a helmet on the show. Nick and I start off this episode by looking at the injury report that Mike Tomlin gave on Tuesday and how it could affect the Steelers this weekend against the Arizona Cardinals. We also look at a few other comments Tomlin made during the presser. We move on to the hot news on Wednesday that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger wants to run the no-huddle offense more. Former Steelers CB Crezdon Butler Sidelined Indefinitely With Dislocated Ankle

Former Steelers cornerback Crezdon Butler suffered a dislocated ankle in practice on Thursday according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic and he could miss a significant amount of time with the injury. There are some rumblings that he could miss the rest of the 2011 season. The Cardinals aren’t commenting on the severity of the injury right now according to Somers. Butler was drafted in the fifth-round of the 2010 draft by the Steelers, but was waived during the final cut-downs earlier this month. Butler was claimed off of waivers immediately by the Cardinals and he was reunited with former Read more [...]

Steelers 2011 Game By Game Schedule Breakdown

The Steelers 2011 season kicks off this Sunday and I have purposely waited until now to post a game by game quick look ahead at the Steelers 2011 schedule. The free agent moves and final roster cuts have taken place around the league and it provides a much clearer look at where teams are at that the Steelers will face this year. I will not go too much into depth with each game and will try to capsulize each. So many things can change the further you get into the season and you never can predict injuries that may occur along the way. With all of those disclaimers out of the way, here is a quick Read more [...]

Crezdon Butler Claimed Off Waivers By Cardinals

It was easy to see coming and as I predicted following the Saturday release of cornerback Crezdon Butler, the Arizona Cardinals claimed Butler off of waivers today. The Cardinals were down to just 4 cornerbacks after their final roster cuts on Saturday and you had to know former Steelers defensive backs coach Ray Horton would be watching the Steelers waiver wire closely. Horton had Butler under is wing last year after Butler was picked by the Steelers in the 5th round of the 2010 draft. Horton said last year that Butler worked at both corner and safety and always seemed to have glowing reports Read more [...]

Analyzing The Final 5 Steelers Cuts

The Steelers final cuts are in and overall none are a huge surprise in my opinion. Crezdon Butler might be the one that most are scratching their head about, but he certainly was on the bubble. The Steelers stuck to their recent history of keeping six cornerbacks and when Cortez Allen finally hit the field Thursday night against the Panthers, he showed glimpses of why they drafted him. Butler had an easy interception return against the Falcons for a touchdown and while it was a splash play, it was an easy play to make and it was not enough for him to keep his job. Had he had the offseason mini-camps Read more [...]

DE Nick Eason Agrees To Terms With Cardinals

Another former Steelers player is headed to Pittsburgh West as defensive end Nick Eason has agreed to a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals according to John Clayton. Eason will be re-united with Ray Horton, the Steelers former defensive backs coach, who is now the Cardinals defensive coordinator. Eason signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent back in April of 2007 and played sparingly on defense during his 4 years in Pittsburgh. He started 11 regular season games during that span and was credited with 3 sacks and 63 combined tackles. Eason was an unrestricted free agent Read more [...]

Could Ike Taylor & William Gay Both End Up With The Cardinals?

The latest trade rumors on Friday came from ESPN reporter Sal Paolantonio who stated today on Sirius NFL Radio that the Philadelphia Eagles are no longer interested trading quarterback Kevin Kolb for 2012 draft picks, but instead now want a player who can help them win games now. The Eagles are needing a cornerback, but may not be willing to get involved in the feeding frenzy for Oakland Raiders free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. There is speculation for the last few days that the Eagles might covet Arizona Cardinals cornerback Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie to play opposite Asante Samuel and that Read more [...]

Steelers Assistant Coaches Get Little Love In Latest ESPN Power Rankings

The bloggers on ESPN.com are at it again with their latest power rankings. They are running out of things to rank and have resorted to ranking the rising assistant coaches around the NFL now. Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and Cowboys new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan topped the rankings of rising assistant coaches and Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler finished tied for last among coaches that received at least one vote. It is no surprise that the lone vote for Butler came from AFC North blogger James Walker. The purpose of this latest power ranking reportedly was to develop Read more [...]

Lake May Be Just What Keenan Lewis Needs To Turn The Corner & Become A Corner

The Steelers named Carnell Lake as their new defensive backs coach on Monday and it looks like a solid hire from the outside. I documented the job Lake did in his one season coaching the UCLA defensive backs last week and Lake certainly has the resume as a former player. Lake played both safety and cornerback for the Steelers and played under Dick LeBeau as well, so he knows the basics of the defensive scheme. [flv:http://prod.video.steelers.clubs.nfl.com/PIT/video/Super_Bowl_XLV/030811_carnell_lake_vignette.flv 425 349] One of the biggest projects that Lake will have as the new secondary Read more [...]

Steelers Hire Carnell Lake As New Defensive Backs Coach

It was just announced a little while ago that former Steelers safety Carnell Lake has been hired to replace Ray Horton as the new defensive backs coach for the Steelers. Lake played 10 seasons with the Steelers and was a five-time Pro Bowl safety from (1989-98). Lake interviewed last Wednesday with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin for the job that vacated when Horton took the defensive coordinator job with the Cardinals shortly after the Super Bowl. Lake coached the defensive backs at UCLA in 2009, but had to step down after one season due to personal issues. In the one year with UCLA he did a great Read more [...]

Steelers Six From Around The Web – Thursday March 3rd – Hire Bruce Arians Edition

On Wednesday Mike Tomlin interviewed former Steelers safety Carnell Lake for the open defensive backs coaching job. Tomlin has been in no hurry to fill the position since Ray Horton left to take the Cardinals defensive coordinator position. Lake coached the defensive backs at UCLA for just one season as he stepped down because of family reasons. In other Steelers not so earth shattering coaching news, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians signed his one-year contract with the Steelers on Wednesday. Arians was promoted from wide receivers coach to his current position in 2007. Suck it haters. lol Read more [...]

Steelers Interviewing Chuck Cecil For Secondary Coach Position

ESPN reporter John Clayton is reporting that the Steelers are interviewing former Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil for the teams open secondary coach position. Former secondary coach Ray Horton left to become the defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals last week. It was announced on January 20th that Cecil would not be retained as the Titans defensive coordinator under new head coach Mike Munchak. Cecil was in the news this past season after being caught on camera giving officials the middle-finger gesture while protesting a neutral zone infraction call against one of his Read more [...]

Head coach Mike Tomlin wants to retain both Dick LeBeau on defense and Bruce Arians on offense and does not plan changes at any other coaching positions. Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley hasn’t been told formally yet, but expects to be designated as the team’s franchise player within the next two weeks, according to a source. Steelers secondary coach Ray Horton is now the Arizona Cardinals new defensive coordinator and he had his presser yesterday you can watch here. Former kicker Jeff Reed was back on Pittsburgh radio yesterday morning talking about the Super Bowl and how things Read more [...]

Steelers Six From Around The Web – Wednesday February 9th – Flozell Future Foggy Edition

Ed Bouchette was on 93.7 The Fan yesterday morning and talked about the future of Bruce Arians, his thoughts on the Steelers free agents and why the Steelers will not go after cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Steelers secondary coach Ray Horton is the favorite to become the new defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals and the deal could be finalized by Wednesday. Mike Bires reports that right tackle Flozell Adams isn’t sure whether he’ll he come back for his 14th season or call it a career. Dale Lolley suggest the Steelers should seriously consider moving Maurkice Pouncey to left Read more [...]
