2011 Steelers 90 Man Roster With Early Training Camp Notes

Now that the CBA has been ratified and the official moves are out of the way, we have a good starting point for the 2011 Steelers 90 man roster to move forward with. Below is the roster and some early camp notes on each player. The Steelers will carry 90 players on their roster until the first cut-down date which is Aug. 30 and at that time they will need to cut to 75 players. The final roster cut is Sept. 3 and that is when they will need to trim down to their 53 man roster. # Name POS Notes 7 Roethlisberger, Ben QB Ball and chain and Netflix will be good for him 4 Leftwich, Read more [...]

Steelers 2011 Roster As It Stands Today – Players Under Contract

During the Steelers pre draft press conference today Steelers Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert said, “We’re going to pick based on our team as it currently stands,” Colbert said. “I don’t know how it currently stands because there’s different possibilities that exist. But when the lockout began this is our team as we know it, and we’re going to draft accordingly.” What Colbert was of course eluding to are the several free agents the Steelers have that are up in the air. Most notably are the ones who’s free agent status depends on the outcome of a new CBA like tackle Willie Colon, Read more [...]

A Look At The Unsettled Roster Spots On The Steelers 53 Man Roster

Now that things have died down a bit before the draft, I figured it was a good time to look at the potential roster spots on the 53 man roster that one could consider as being unsettled at this point late in March. Several of these spots will close up quickly as soon as we know how the true status of the players that are unrestricted that might be deemed restricted. Also undetermined at this time is the future of free agent Ike Taylor and veteran Flozell Adams as well. Will there be 21 actually roster spot up for grabs? Highly unlikely. In fact when the dust settles I suspect it will be easy to Read more [...]

Steelers Have Players With Super Bowl Experience On Their Side

The Green Bay Packers might be favorites to win Super Bowl XLV by the early odds makers but it is not because of experience. The Steelers have 25 players on their current 53 man roster than have played in the big game as opposed to just 2 Packers players that can say they have played in a Super Bowl. The Steelers have several more that traveled with the team on the 53 man roster to a Super Bowl, but did not play in the actual game. The toughest part outside of the actual game is the frenzy of the media, family and festivities leading up to the big game. Media day is an experience in itself and Read more [...]

Steelers 2010 Contract Year Players & Players Under Contract Update

It is time to take an updated look at the current players on the Steelers roster and what season is there final year of their contract. The two big names that will talked about in the offseason of course will be outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley and right cornerback Ike Taylor. I would not expect the Steelers to do anything with any of the players until hopefully a new CBA is agreed upon. Hopefully a franchise tag will also once again be in the picture as well. In 2011, several big names will enter their final contract year in the form of strong safety Troy Polamalu, inside linebacker Lawrence Read more [...]

Steelers 2010 Salary Cap Analysis Of Roster

Now that the 53 man roster is set and the 8 players have been signed to the Steelers practice squad, it is time to look at the players under contract and how the payroll shakes out heading into week 1. as most know, there is no salary cap in 2010, but the Steelers made it known that they will treat the payroll and roster as if the salary cap was in place to help in future years when and if a new CBA is reached. These contract numbers and amounts are not exact, but should be close as I keep close look out on the numbers from the NFLPA as they come in and am constantly updating my spreadsheet. I Read more [...]

Byron Leftwich Was Not Eligible For PUP List

I received an email asking why Steelers quarterback Byron Leftwich was not placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to start the season with his MCL injury. I was confused about this as well as it has been several years since I read up on it. Players must be placed on the PUP list at the start of training camp for not passing any part of their physical before they practice for the first time with the team. Once the player is cleared to practice, he can no longer be placed on the PUP list and if injured, must be placed on the injured reserve list, released with some sort of settlement Read more [...]

The Steelers will now look to put together their 8 man practice squad after players clear waivers. Players released over the last two days that are eligible for 2010 Practice squad are  Worthington, Urbik, Read more [...]

Did Jonathan Dwyer Make The 53?

Although not a verified Twitter account, I have followed the presumed Jonathan Dwyer Twitter page for quite a while now. On Friday the latest status update reads, “Thank you Lord” and one can only assume that Dwyer was told he has made the initial 53 roster. After a very shaky start to training camp, Dwyer ran well during the final two preseason games. His details outside of carrying the ball need quite a bit of attention and if indeed he has made the 53 man roster, you can expect him to be a game day inactive for quite a while baring an injury to the other three running backs on the roster. 2010 Steelers Final 53 Man Roster Prediction

Oh how things can change so quickly. One play of the preseason even. As it stands right now, it looks like Byron Leftwich has some MCL damage. Early reports say it is torn, but that is not confirmed. This 53 man roster prediction of mine assumes he will be placed on IR. If not, I get one mulligan before the cuts are made Saturday. Here is the 53 man prediction from last week and I will note the changes and why I made them. First I added Kraig Urbik back because I feel he has improved greatly over the last 2 weeks. This takes me from 9 to 10 lineman. The next change is the releasing of Joe Burnett Read more [...]

Steelers Current Players On Roster Eligible For Practice Squad

A reader emailed me this afternoon and wanted to know of the 75 players on the active roster, which ones are eligible to be signed to the practice squad and what constitutes eligibility. First we go to the NFL rules on this: What makes a player eligible for an NFL practice squad? (a) The practice squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad: (i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL experience; and (ii) free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games during Read more [...]

10 Steelers Players With Turk Appointments & 17 Bubble Boys

The Steelers trimmed down to 75 players on Tuesday morning and now will need to cut 21 more by September 4th. Why 21 and not 22 you ask? This is because quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be moved to the reserve/suspended list, so technically that will not be a cut. I have listed 10 players that will likely be seeing the Turk soon and 16 players who could be considered on the bubble right now in my opinion. None of these are locked in stone mind you and this list is for entertainment purposes only, so no one get your feelings hurt until the cuts are made as ANYTHING can happen in these final days Read more [...]

2010 Steelers Preseason Week 3 53 Man Roster Prediction

Ok, we are now three games through the preseason games and the Steelers are licking their wounds after losing to the Broncos Sunday night. I have just finished watching the replay for a 3rd time and am ready to release my latest 53 man roster prediction. Below are the changes and the reasoning for the add and drops. The only real change I made this week from last week, is to add Jonathan Dwyer back to the 53 man roster and have cut fullback Frank Summers. It is not so much that Dwyer had a better showing last night, which he did, as much as Summers is not playing well and they just do not need Read more [...]

2010 Steelers Preseason Half Way Point 53 Man Roster Prediction

Ok, we are now half way through preseason games and training camp has officially broken. We have had quite a bit of game footage and information to digest and I am ready to revamp my 53 man roster prediction as the Steelers head into week 3 of the preseason against the Denver Broncos. Below are the changes and the reasoning for the add and drops. There is no need to keep Justin Hartwig now. I wrote about this way back on July 1st that he was not a lock and it looks like it is coming to fruition. Maurkice Pouncey is ready and Doug Legursky can back him up. Sure, Hartwig played guard before, but Read more [...]

2010 Steelers Pre Training Camp 53 Man Roster Prediction

Ok, the mini camps and OTA’s are now over and we are just 8 days away from training camp opening in Latrobe for the Steelers. On April 24th, I took my first offseason guess at the 53 man roster and quite a bit has changed over 3 months. Willie Colon is out for the year and draft pick Chris Scott looks to miss much of if not all of camp with a foot injury. I replaced them with Jonathan Scott and Tony Hills respectively and added Doug Legursky as it is evident Maurkice Pouncey is destined to work at guard initially. Nick Eason was scratched to make room for Crezdon Butler, who I now think will make Read more [...]
