When the Steelers report to Latrobe on tomorrow, so will begin several training camp battles that we will be keeping a close eye on. We have narrowed them down to six to match the six championships the Steelers have. They are as follows.
1. Quarterback - Byron Leftwich vs. Dennis Dixon - Mike Tomlin has let veteran Byron Leftwich receive most of the first team snaps since his re-acquisition from Tampa Bay. The Steelers will need a starter for at least 4 games with franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger suspended to start the season and Leftwich looks to be the guy unless Dennis Dixon can

John Harris talks to cornerbacks Bryant McFadden, Ike Taylor and William Gay about the need for the Steelers to make more splash plays on defense in 2010 and more specifically in the secondary. This group has been training together down in Florida.
John Grupp, caught up with Steelers legend Frenchy Fuqua one day after former Oakland Raiders Pro Bowl safety Jack Tatum died from a heart attack, Fuqua, once again, declined to publicly discuss one of the most famous plays in NFL history. The two will be forever linked together by the Immaculate Reception in the 1972 playoffs at Three Rivers Stadium

The TO Show has arrived in Cincinnati on Tuesday as free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens signed a one year deal to play for the Bengals in 2010. Owens joins fellow reality TV teammate Chad Ochocinco and the two together look to strike fear into AFC North secondaries. Everywhere in the AFC North except for Pittsburgh, that is. The Steelers have handled both Owens and Ochocinco relatively well respectively over the recent years. Below I have listed Owens stats for his last 2 games versus the Steelers as well as the stats of Chad Ochocinco since 2004 versus Pittsburgh. I stopped at 2004 as it was

Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer has a press conference scheduled for this afternoon and will respond to allegations that former Gator lineman Maurkice Pouncey took $100,000 from the representative of a sports agent in December. The Pouncey family is reportedly holding off on a statement until Meyer addresses the media today.
Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley is getting a bit more vocal about his contract situation and we have all the interviews and stories here.
Mike Florio joined Seibel and Starkey on 93.7 The Fan to discuss the Woodley situation in depth. Florio says the

It looks like the Steelers are indeed done with contracts for the offseason and once the season starts, no new deals are likely to be done, especially with the cloudy NFL labor situation. To the best of my calculations, the Steelers have 25 of 81 players on the final year of their current contract. I did not prioritize them below, but it is not hard to pick out those that are high profile moving forward. Those players would be: LaMarr Woodley, Ike Taylor, Jeff Reed and Daniel Sepulveda in my opinion. Dennis Dixon, Willie Colon and Trai Essex are fringe at this point. I have included a blurb on

Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau was spotted wearing a Aaron Smith's jersey during Thursday's OTA session after wearing James Farrior's on Wednesday. LeBeau is a master at motivating his players, earning their respect and sending them messages.
Nick Fierro of the Morning Call has an article on the opportunity former Steelers 2009 draft pick A.Q. Shipley has to make the Eagles roster. Shipley is a Penn State grad.
Ed Bouchette caught up with current #3 quarterback Charlie Batch to find out about his thoughts on possibly being the starter. Batch is the consummate professional, but

Here are some notes below I have collected from the Steelers Friday mini-camp practice.
Byron Leftwich worked as the first team quarterback followed by Dennis Dixon and then Charlie Batch.
Cornerback Bryant McFadden worked as the first team left cornerback ahead of William Gay while Gay worked as the nickel back and the first-team special teams gunner opposite special teams ace, Anthony Madison.
Andre Frazier worked first team outside right linebacker in place of the absent James Harrison, who was excused for a death in a family back home. Second-round pick Jason Worilds backed up Frazier.
Fourth-round

The Steelers brought back a familiar face on Saturday as the acquired former starting cornerback Bryant McFadden from the Arizona Cardinals for a fifth-round pick (No. 155). The Steelers also received a sixth-round pick (No. 195) in the deal. The Steelers didn't take a cornerback in the top half of the draft and now we know why. McFadden left Pittsburgh after signing a free-agent deal with the Cardinals following the 2008 Super Bowl season. Although it's early, there is a real good chance McFadden will go back to his role as the starting cornerback ahead of William Gay. Gay played well in the nickel

Another day, another development in the Ben Roethlisberger story. The The 20-year-old female student who accused Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her will now meet with investigators, according to one of her attorneys. This is the same woman who yesterday was reported as being uncooperative in getting interviewed again by the authorities. She certainly isn't helping her case as of late.
Kelly Naqi of ESPN, reports another part of the he said, she said story. This story revolves around one of the men in Ben's entourage, guarding the door to the bathroom and not letting a friend of the accuser

If you missed the official news from the last few days on the Steelers restricted free agents, Steelers.com has all of the info on the tendering of Willie Colon, William Gay, Daniel Sepulveda and Matt Spaeth. The only player we do not have clarification on yet is exclusive rights free agent Patrick Bailey.
Do not stay up late tonight says Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert. Colbert has said it will "be business as usual" for the Steelers when the new NFL year starts Friday. I doubt there will be a huge flurry league wide anyways. Teams will be much more calculated with the

The Steelers tendered two more restricted free agents on Wednesday as they gave both cornerback William Gay and tight end Matt Spaeth the lowest tenders of $1,101,000 for 2010. Free agency begins midnight Thursday and guard Darnell Stapleton and running back back Carey Davis will become unrestricted free agents at that time. Both are not expected to receive tender offers from the Steelers. No word yet on exclusive rights free agent Patrick Bailey, but all signs are pointing to him being retained at a third year players salary.

Since being offered the second-highest tender to restricted free agent, the agent for Steelers right tackle Willie Colon, is posturing for a team to trade for or sign Colon away at a higher price tag than the tender of $2.521 million. You can't blame Joe Linta for trying, it is his job, but this is not likely to happen.
Not much is going on with free agent safety Ryan Clark with the clock ticking down. Clark's agent, Joel Turner, told National Football Post that, "Right now, communication is open. We've agreed to stay in touch. Neither party has shut the door." Sounds like the Steelers think

I wanted to clarify a few things for my readers regarding the 2010 Restricted Free Agents for the Steelers. First off, the Steelers have 6 restricted free agents and 1 Exclusive Rights Free Agent. The Exclusive Rights player is linebacker Patrick Bailey and he only has 2 accrued seasons, meaning the Steelers can keep him by offering him the minimum salary for a 3rd year player and he must accept the offer. The other Restricted Free Agents are then gauged by their accrued seasons. An accrued season is defined by a player having 6 or more regular-season games on a club’s active/inactive roster,

The Steelers 2009 season showed many holes that the Steelers need to address during the 2010 NFL draft. Below I will list I what I feel the draft needs are going into the draft. These are in no particular order and I will have my mock draft up pretty soon in the coming days.
Nose Tackle - Regardless if the Steelers decide to franchise Casey Hampton or not, the Steelers need a young 3-4 nose tackle in waiting. There are rumblings a future shift to a 4-3 defense may be coming in future years, but I do not see this happening while Dick LeBeau is still in charge of the defense. If one is drafted,
