Now that the Pittsburgh Steelers have their entire 2015 draft class signed, it is a perfect time to look at the team’s current salary cap situation.
As of today, the Steelers have 90 players under contract and I currently have them as being $6,332,634.66 under the cap. Let me note, however, that I am accounting for a $1.125 Veteran Cap Credit Payback Charge in addition to $561,600 in projected Workout Bonuses and thus my amount under the cap will be slightly different than the $7,453,473 under that the NFLPA is currently showing. While all of my numbers might not be exact, they are very close as I’m unsure about a few debits for injury settlements the team has had.
Keep in mind that the team will be using roughly another $2 million in cap space to accommodate the 52nd and 53rd players on their roster in addition to a 10-man practice squad.
Now, the Steelers are expected to extend the contract of defensive Cameron Heyward between now and the start of the regular season and that should lower the 2015 cap charge of $6.969 that he currently has by about $3 million. additionally, the team could decide to extend the contracts of tackle Kelvin Beachum and nose tackle Steve McLendon prior to the start the season. An extension for Beachum would likely increase his current 2015 cap charge by a few million while an extension for McLendon could actually lower his current 2015 cap charge by a little more than $500,000.
As you can see, the Steelers appear to be in fine cap shape right now as they can still afford to do a few extension between now and the start of the regular season and still have enough cushion for in-season injuries. We’ll update these numbers again for you whenever any significant moves are made.
