William Gay To Make Decision Soon On Where To Play In 2012

Pittsburgh Steelers unrestricted free agent cornerback William Gay wrapped up his third free agent visit on Wednesday with the Denver Broncos and announced on Twitter that he will be deciding soon where he will play in 2012. Judging by his tweet he has offers on the table from the Steelers, Broncos, Tennessee Titans and the Arizona Cardinals.

Should Gay choose the Cardinals he would be reunited with Ken Whisenhunt, the Steelers former offensive coordinator as well as with Ray Horton, who was the Steelers defensive backs coach prior to becoming the Cardinals defensive coordinator. Should Gay choose the Titans, he would be reunited with former Steelers wide receiver Nate Washington and possibly even former Steelers safety Chris Hope, who is currently an unrestricted free agent himself.

Gay is likely headed back to Orlando this evening, as he was training at the Wide World of Sports complex with Tom Shaw prior to taking his free agency visits. Gay has not said when exactly he will make his decision, but it could come by the end of this week.

Much improved player.. Hasn’t played his best football yet.. Contributes on special teams. I won’t be calling for him to start, but as a nickel corner he is one of the better in the league

For once I actually hope they bring him back

I want him to stay but Im afraid we have lost him. He has become a good Steeler CB.

Hope he returns. Would like to see him compete with Lewis and possibly even Allen for the starting job. Don’t get me wrong I hope he loses the competition but it would be nice to keep him around as depth and as a backup plan.

agree…he’s not a perfect CB, but he plays the game the right way

The Sporting news has actually had a couple of articles( one from a couple years ago and the other from this year, beginning of free agency) that praise Gay.

The older article is about the evolution of the nickelback in the ever increasing pass heavy NFL. It talks about how the traits for a prototypical corner differ from that of a nickelback and discusses how it has basically become a new position in the defense. The article compiles a list of the top nickelbacks in the league, according to an “anonymous” scout, and actually has Gay at the top of it.

The more recent article that was regarding this years free agency states that Gay used to be the leagues top nickel-corner.http://aol.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2012-03-13/top-nfl-free-agents-41-50

I think Gay’s performance last year earned him another year with the Steelers but unfortunately I see him elsewhere. With needing to address Wallace, TE, and potentially runningback I don’t think it will take much of an offer to draw Gay away because the Steelers won’t participate in any kind of a bidding war here. I thought he played well though and would like to see him back
