It was a little bit of a shock this past off-season when the Steelers waived tackle Trevis Turner from the roster in mid May, but now we might know the reason why. Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports via Twitter that Turner, now a free agent, has been suspended for the first four games of the 2012 season for an unspecified reason.
Turner was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Steelers last off-season out of Abilene Christian and he spent his rookie season on the Steelers practice squad. Turner was signed back to the expanded off-season roster following the conclusion of the 2011 season and waived on May 18th when the Steelers signed cornerback Andre Freeman.
Prior to his release in May it looked like Turner might have had a very slim chance to make the Steelers 53 man roster as a swing tackle and at worst he would compete to make the practice squad again. Just prior to his release the Steelers signed tackle Kyle Jolly to the 90 man roster, which could have been a sign the release of Turner was forthcoming.
We have no idea why Turner was suspended or if he will appeal it at this time.
