Steelers Sign Former Penn State WR Derek Moye To The Practice Squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a practice squad move on Wednesday as Bob Labriola reports via Twitter that wide receiver Derek Moye has been signed and tight end Jamie McCoy has been released.

The move was likely made because of the ankle injury suffered by wide receiver Antonio Brown in the 24-20 win this past Sunday over the New York Giants. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday during his press conference that Brown is unlikely to play Monday night against the Kansas City Chiefs because of the injury. Also injured in the game was running back Chris Rainey, who is the emergency fifth wide receiver on gamedays.

The Steelers already have receivers David Gilreath and Toney Clemons on the practice squad, so this could be a sign that Gilreath might be promoted to the 53 man roster later on this week. Tomlin stated Tuesday that a forthcoming move could be possibly.

Moye is a Penn State product who went undrafted this past April and signed as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins. He was waived in June by Miami and was claimed by the New Orleans Saints. Moye was ultimately released by the Saints prior to the start of the season.

Smart move. Moye may not have been drafted but he is a solid young talent. Let’s see what he can do.

Moye is a good kid and a friend of a friend. Hope it works out for him.

Better believe the Steelers would have had him in training camp if he was available. Steelers always have their eyes on PA college products

During the preseason games, by the time preseason finished there appeared big dropoff of talent of WRs after our 4th WR which is Cotchery. That’s one of the factors which I think make Haley’s system a good fit for us right now – Haley’s reputation is he doesnt use 5 WRs much, instead Haley uses TEs & he likes to keep a legit fullback on roster, plus Haley prefers to keep a little RB/WR gadget guy (in our case Rainey).

Thats contrast to BArians etc. if we still had BArians, & our starting WR(s) get injured we would be automatically using Moye & Clemons instead of Will Johnson blasting & Rainey available.

Btw: I’m not saying Moye is a bum. I pulled for Moye because he’s a Penn Stater, & I was aware of Clemons’ size-speed combo, & slender Galreath was fun to root for such an underdog. And at TE I’m not convinced yet that we have any good TE other than Miller. I’m just referring to the advantage of try keep the best 53 regardless of position, & just based on watching our WR depth in preseason I think the best 53 is to use a FB & Rainey instead of forcing to move up our 5th & 6th WRs just because they are WRs.
