Steelers Claim NT Hebron Fangupo Off Waivers From Seahawks

The Pittsburgh Steelers filled the 53rd spot on the roster on Saturday by claiming nose tackle Hebron Fangupo off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks.

Fangupo was originally signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent this season after playing his college ball at Southern California and Brigham Young after serving a two-year Mormon mission in Philippines.

The 6\'1", 323-pound nose tackle was signed to the Seahawks practice squad on September 11, 2012 after being released by the Texans prior to the start of the season. He was promoted to the Seahawks 53 man roster in Week 16, but waived by them on Friday.

At the combine back in February Fangupo did 36 reps on the bench and posted a 5.18 40 yard dash time to go along with a 4.62 20 yard shuttle.

The Steelers will now have Fangupo to compete with Alameda Ta\'aum next year in training camp and it might prevent them from spending a draft pick this coming April on another nose tackle.

Fangupo is expected to be one of the seven inactive players Sunday against the Browns.

    What about McLendon?

  • SteelerDave

Only problem is he seems to be more of a 4-3 DT than a NT. Could a change to a 4-3 be in the future for us?

  • SteelersDepot

Nothing changes with McLendon. What about him? Still the starter next year assuming Casey not back on one year minimum.

  • SteelSpine

Thanks for the info! Good time to get just get a wide body in now to give him offseason to think about it so he’ll have more of a fair chance to compete with Taamu next preseason. Big Snack, then Shamu, ahh now get ready for “The Fang” :)

  • Garrett Hunt

Sounds like we can have some good NT competition over the offseason. I hope Ta’aum benefits from it.

  • LouPGH

I’m good with this pick up. Many of the early mocks have us taking a NT in the First Round. I didn’t buy that and this would seem to support my position on the subject. Too many other holes to fill and McClendon has played well enough to earn the chance to start while we see if Ta’amu pans out.

  • SteelerDave

I agree. McLendon has shown himself to be a capable NT in the league – never going to be pro bowl caliper but he is good enough for NT to not be a weakness. No need to draft a NT in the top 5 rounds.

Thing is, at least how I see them, McLendon and Hood and now Fangupo are much, much more suited to play DT. If Bjoern Werner happens to fall down to us in the draft then I have so say take him and convert to a 4-3. Dion Jordan same thing. DL left to right – Werner/Jordan, Hood, McLendon, Heywood – LOLB Woodley, MLB Spence, ROLB Worlids

  • Phil Heidenreich

Where did TImmons go? Beyond that it seems like a pretty formidable defense.

  • Mikey Hoje

I’m confused at the article on top; shouldn’t Ta’mu have some sort of prison sentence pending? perhaps a year or so or more, eluding police?

  • Chris S

No thanks. Plus Woodley and Worilds would be more like DE’s than OLBs in a 4-3 (they were DEs in college…and are awful big to be OLBs in a 4-3). You’d have Timmons at OLB, Spence MLB and even Harrison at the other OLB for example.

  • mokhkw

Not happening while LeBeau is the DC, and I’d suggest that it’s the same when Butler takes over. The personnel we have on D was drafted for a 3-4; to change to a 4-3 would mean a lot of player turnover.

  • mokhkw

If Hampton wasn’t going to be brought back don’t you think McClendon would have been given more snaps this season? I get the feeling that the Steelers don’t see McClendon as a starter but more of a Chris Hoke type back-up; one who can start if needed but will contribute mostly on passing downs.

I think Hampton gets one more season & they draft a NT – Jesse Wlliams from Ala. in Rd.1 (homer pick as he’s from Brisbane, Australia and I’d love to see an Aussie playing for the Steelers) :)

Then again, NT does seem to be the one position where a rookie can start in LeBeau’s system; from memory Hampton is the only Draft pick from 2001-onwards who has started in year 1 (started 11/16 games). I expected to see McClendon starting by this season’s end if the Steelers were intending to let Hampton go and start McClendon next season.

I don’t watch college football so I don’t know the
level of talent they are up against but I’m liking what I see from
Fangupo’s tape over Ta’amu’s. He seems to finish plays better, have a
higher motor and is not so heavy footed. I hope both work out.

  • Jollyrob68

I thhimk they move on from Hampton who is a free agent.

  • Maurice_hill_district

I too wondering what is the status of criminal trial & when will be the sentencing of Ta’amu. I thought that would be part of the equation at backup NT. Maybe the criminal trial was postponed until after the season. Who knows.

  • zyzak

Hampton will be back he is playing better than ANY of the linemen

  • steeltown

WOW.. Awesome! I wanted the Steelers to draft this guy with one of there 7th Rd picks way back when.. I think the reason he slipped in the draft is he’ll be 28yrs old come next year. This guy is strong! Great pick up, even if its just to push Ta’amu… or, maybe Ta’amu will get charged and the Team will release him

  • steeltown

All players on this Defense have been groomed and suited to play 3-4.. it would take years to make that switch.. dont fix what isnt broken

  • steeltown

He’s 6’1 325lbs thats perfect 3-4 NT size and he’s extremely strong.. they’ll see what kind of push he gets up front

  • steeltown

There are too many other positions that need to be addressed this offseason, we have lots of FA’s, unless Hampton plays for a vet minimum he wont be back

  • steeltown

He has court on December 31, 2012

  • steeltown

Court on Dec. 31st…. my guess is this pickup is in case Ta’amu is charged and given prison time. So its a very smart move. He’ll either push Ta’amu in training camp… or he replaces him

  • steeltown

Yea but Hampton was a 1st Rd pick and was basically NFL ready coming out of college.. a beast.. not too many Casey Hamptons in the world

  • steeltown

Man, this is awesome.. if you wouldve told me before the season that we’d have Ta’amu AND Fangupo on our rsoter I’d have said youre crazy (of course Ta’amu might not be for long, pending his sentencing)

  • Maurice_hill_district

I appreciate that quick scoop. And all that makes good sense to me.
