Has CB William Gay Signed Back With The Steelers?

Has free agent cornerback William Gay re-signed back with the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Gay, who was released by the Arizona Cardinals on Friday, posted on his Twitter account Sunday that he is glad he didn\’t sell his condo in Pittsburgh. In addition to that, Gay has also changed his Twitter profile to reflect that he now plays for the Steelers.

I pulled a cached copy of his Twitter profile, and in it he list that he is with the Cardinals. Where there is smoke there is fire.

William Gay Cardinals Steelers

I posted following his release from the Cardinals that it would not be surprising to see Gay re-sign with the Steelers. He most likely would come cheap and would give the team experienced depth at the cornerback position. In addition to that, Gay has always been a solid contributor on special teams.

Gay was an unrestricted free agent last offseason and he decided to sign with the Cardinals after it is rumored that he turned down a lower offer from the Steelers. With Keenan Lewis currently an unrestricted free agent this offseason, bringing back Gay makes sense just in case Lewis is unable to be retained. Gay was a cap casualty for the Cardinals as his scheduled 2013 salary increased thanks to him hitting playing time incentives. In addition to that, defensive coordinator Ray Horton was not retained and has since moved on to the Cleveland Browns.

We will wait for the official word, but it appears the Steelers former fifth round draft pick is back with the team that drafted him.

ETA: No NFL transactions were reported by the league today, so that means Gay technically has not signed yet. Monday or Tuesday is when we will know.

Interesting…either that…or he is just celebrating/promoting his most well known Team/etc…and he’s moving back to Pittsburgh as he’d rather be there than live in AZ? Who knows anymore with some of these players messages.

Seems like a situation almost identical to that of Bryant McFadden. Hopefully if Gay is in fact brought back, it ends up working better than it did for McFadden.

This would be a smart move.. he would be cheap to sign and provide instant depth, especially should Curtis Brown not pan out. Plus we could use the help on special teams… Everyone remember the end of last season when Ike, Keenan and Cortez were injured and Victorian started… ouch…

Ike Taylor, Keenan Lewis, Cortez Allen, William Gay and Curtis Brown, thats great depth. However if this would be due to us not re-signing Lewis, I am not happy

  • Kusko_Ken

Signing Gay is a cheap insurance policy. I’m less optimistic than most that the Steelers will get a deal done with Keenan Lewis. Lewis, like Wallace, wants “his paper” and in the end i see a team like the Browns offering Lewis lots of “paper”.

  • Alex K

Good depth and insurance if we lose lewis.

  • RMSteeler

I hope we don’t have to give back the 7th Rd comp pick we supposed to get for him?

  • Shannon Stephenson

Lewis was making waves that something good was happening. I hope it was with the Steelers but time will tell. At this point in Ike’s career I would rather let Ike go to keep a much younger Lewis.

  • Kusko_Ken

I agree, i’d like to see Lewis sign with the Steelers. With Horton in Cleveland and that huge pile of cash things might get interesting. Honestly, i can see a scenario where Cleveland lands both Wallace and Lewis.

I’m surprised that some people seem to be assuming that the Steelers are letting Lewis go if Gay is coming back. Gay is a good backup and a great special teams player. While he’ll never be as good as Ike Taylor, Cortez Allen, or Keenan Lewis, having him means that the team can look elsewhere in the draft for players.

March 12th is the first time free agents are actually free to talk to other teams unless they have been waived by their own team first. Keenan Lewis was the primary target of the Steelers in free agency this year, and the Steelers have made a point of saying that he will not be waived, so if that tweet about Lewis’ “secret” that will be revealed later last week was about football, it about has to be about staying with the Steelers.

  • Good move, he’ll make a good nickel back

  • Ahmad

Great. Now we can blitz him off the edge again which was his best quality anyway.

  • RMSteeler

Maybe he’s pulling a Mike Wallace on everyone. Could have been renting in AZ and now is just glad not to be homeless!

I was thinking around the end of this season that the situation with Wallace and the Steelers could negatively influence negotiations with Lewis since they were high school teammates and close friends. so I would not be suprised if they ended up on the same team (I would also not be suprised if Lewis wants more $ than the Steelers can afford, like Wallace. hope that is not the case)
If the Steelers answer to losing Lewis is to resign Gay, then I am little worried about how this offseason will turn out, and that 8-8 might be repeated next season (or worse) I dont think Gay is a horrible player, but I dont understand why they would bring back a guy they didnt have much interest in keeping last year?

The Gay sighting in PIT could mean these things:

    1. Keenan Lewis’s asking price is way out of our range.
    2. Coach LeBeau and Carnell Lake have no faith in Curtis Brown as the nickel
    3. Kevin Colbert is just doing his due diligence by bringing in an adequate player under 30 without an injury history who is familiar with the Steeler system.

As long as Gay doesn’t start, I am good with it. I prefer the DB rotation be Lewis and Ike Taylor starting, Cortez Allen at nickel, and Gay be the dime. However, chances are we are going to lose Lewis to big money free agency, which means Allen and Ike will start and if he signs, Gay will be the nickel and Curtis Brown (if he stays on the team) will be the dime.

Damn, now I wish I wouldn’t have deleted my tirade in the comments section of the other post about Gay. The hate on this dude is seriously unjustified.

As an aside, the difference in intelligence of the opinions offered via the comments section and those offered via Facebook comment is astonishing.

  • LouPGH

Going to go ahead and point out (again) that Gay had as many takeaways last year as Cortez Allen (2 Int, 3 FF), which was only two fewer takeaways than all the Steelers CBs combined (including Allen, obviously).

I’m not saying the guy is a shut-down, stone cold, Pro Bowl stud, but if they signed him for the minimum, it’s a solid addition.

  • SteelSpine

Yep. Hope it’s to avoid relying on Victorian instead of a hedge for Keenan.
    – Victorian: Starting him was a nightmare; tried hard but was out of his league.
    – VanDyke: LeBeau used rookie Victorian at CB insteda Van Dyke, that says all I need to know about Van Dyke’s ability to play CB (or readiness for CB).
    – Gay: He is the same player as thusfar Curtis Brown.
    – Curtis Brown: He no-doubt sees opportunity now if Keenan doesn’t return, I think Brown needs to make splash plays to gain or re-gain confidence.
    – Keenan learned our D & started having the swagger Ike has, I’d hate to lose a guy we invested a #2 pick then 3 seasons developing him for some other team.
    – Keenan this offseason being the league’s best FA CB available, top CB in offseasons get big fat deal which Brandon Carr got last offseason as top FA CB. So depends on whether any team w cap space thinks Keenan is as ready as Carr was.
    – If we lose Keenan & gained Gay, LeBeau better use LeBeau’s magic this year.
    – Gay is OK if/for only dime CB or nickel & STs. A way I remember his limitations is in open field running backs/TEs ran over him like a steamroller, heheh.

  • Intropy

Gay was marginal as a starter, but pretty solid at nickel. I don’t have any idea how his game has developed in AZ.

  • LouPGH

Yeah, I don’t see him returning as a starter. To my mind, they still need to get a deal done with Lewis. And they have to be excited about Cortez Allen, of course. From what I saw out of Curtis Brown though, he didn’t look ready to be in the mix. I can’t honestly say I watched many Cardinals games last year — Gay’s passes defensed were down — but otherwise his numbers are comparable to, or better than, when he left.

  • disqus_5IWNhVT8DI

Please no William Gay. He is aweful. I cant believe he played as long as he did with the steelers.

  • steeltown

I think Van Dyke was injured and eventually placed on IR mid-late December, at the time Curtis Brown and Victorian were starting.

Dont forget, Revis’ name is being thrown around the trade talk.. and you have Cary Williams, Rodgers Cromartie, Cox and Talib testing the market as well.. and Nnamdi Asomugha will asked to take a huge paycut in Philly, otherwise he might be released

But, either way lets just hope Lewis and the Steelers have discussed and have all but signed a long term agreement

  • Michael Mazanowski

Some of these posts make me sick! I mean come on get rid of LeBeau?!! WTF?! We have had amazing defenses over the last few years and people want to see LeBeau go. . .really? Really?

The signing of William Gay is not the end of the world! Even if we lose Lewis we will be ok! A decent pass rush this year it would certainly help our defensive backs–you could throw in Tim McKyer and we wld be ok with a decent rush!
Remember the Steelers have had good DB’s leave and go elsewhere only to struggle not being in LeBeau’s system. LeBeau makes everyone better!

  • Michael Mazanowski

    Now where’s the tylenol?!

  • Michael Mazanowski

Agreed! Finally someone who is rational!!

  • Michael Mazanowski

Hey, Steeltown did you know the sky was falling?!

  • Michael Mazanowski

I’m just concerned that we signed Gay to a 3 yr because we are going to lose Lewis. Remember Lewis isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread either…um sliced bread!!
