Steelers Free Agent RB Rashard Mendenhall Signs One-Year Contract With Cardinals

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now lost two of their unrestricted free agents to other teams as running back Rashard Mendenhall has signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday.

Mendenhall, who was reportedly expected to sign with the Denver Broncos, chose instead to reunite himself with Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, the Steelers former offensive coordinator.

The one-year deal is good for both sides. Mendenhall gets a chance to prove that he is fully healthy and back to being the running back he was prior to the ACL injury that he suffered in the 2011 season finale against the Cleveland Browns and the Cardinals only have one year committed to him should he not perform.

A solid year by Mendenhall would allow him to test free agency again next off-season as he obviously didn\’t have many suitors this off-season due to the current question marks associated with him.

The Steelers lost wide receiver Mike Wallace to the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday. Both Wallace and Mendenhall could produce compensatory draft picks in 2014.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Oh no. Oh no. He gained almost 200 all purpose yards last year. How will we ever replace him?

  • steeltown

    Ha!

  • James

Very surprised that he signed only a 1-year deal and didn’t make the trip to Denver just to see what they would offer.

  • steeltown

    Me too

It’s either our OL SUCKS or Mendy’s a dancer, which is which? ( don’t forget your Chefon dress, anyone, agree?)

  • SG

What a complete shock that he went to Arizona, I did not see that coming! I wonder when Cards fans will finally get sick of all the Steeler cast offs and retreads.

  • Kenneth Wilt

Mendy must be a glutton for punishment. He got misused in all the years that Arians was here by running right into the back of the lineman, so what does he do in his “showoff” year contract….he goes right back to it.

  • K.S. Ziegler

I’m not convinced that the Steelers handled the Mendenhall situation very well. I would have liked to have seen a healthy Mendenhall (unlike last year) with the new zone blocking scheme. Evidently, he wasn’t very expensive.

  • dgh57

Why was it a shock to you? With Bruce Arians in charge now I was expecting it! I just wonder why it was only a 1 year deal! Willie Colon may end up there also. There or in Buffalo where they already have Kraig Urbik, Keith Williams and Chris Scott all ex-Steeler o-linemen!

  • Mikey Hoje

he wrote it as mockery. Subtext.

I’m sure his agent has ball-park numbers to throw around from various teams and this was probably the best deal (numbers wise) he could get. He’s not coming off a stellar year. Little downside risk for Arizona and Mendenhall has a chance to put up respectable numbers and enter FA next year for a better deal.

  • Bradys_Dad

I truly wish him well. All things (past issues) aside, he was a nice guy and deserves a chance.

  • dgh57

    Okay I’ll except that!!

  • Clint Martin

I don’t think he is going to have fun running behind that O-line.

  • Mr irrelevant.

In other rb news We dodged bullet. Wells was in for physical. “Bad knees, damaged goods”. Whew

  • steeltown

Looks like the Foote contract is around $1.8MIL per season… good deal!

People know that the O-line’s been a problem in recent years, yet they blamed Mendenhall for not being productive enough… WTF? He had decent years despite the O-line and got dumped before he could return to full strenght. I don’t like this at all… Colbert, Tomlin et al. better make a smart plan for RBs this year… Don’t count on Redman and Dwyer showing much more than they have already.

  • http://www.facebook.com/trace.gamble.5 Trace Gamble

agreed… he’s a patient runner and has good burst when there’s an opening. he has the speed to stretch the play and get to the edge. so much for that with the committee in place now.

  • Jefferson_St_Joe

It always appeared to me that there was a clear distinction between the games where Mendenhall was motivated to run hard and those where he wasn’t. Not all of the inconsistency was O-line related and I’ll be surprised if he is still in the league 2 years from now. My other issue with him was that he did not secure the ball. His touch to fumble ratio may have been acceptable, but that never gave me much assurance when the ball was swinging 8 inches from his body as he went through the line.

  • westernsteel

I am surprised some fans think he deserved another chance with the Steelers. Even if he is cheap, he was a bit of a headache, was benched once and suspended for not showing up for a game. Not worth keeping around in my opinion. He was a decent back, but defiantly replaceable.

  • JohnnyV1

Well, since he didn’t get the huge payday, hopefully he’ll gain 1,200yrd and start all year, so at least it will improve our 2014 compensatory pick! Mendenhall wasn’t a bad RB, but not showing up for a game makes him a bad teammate.

  • mghjr88

Mundy is scheduled to visit the Giants. They must not be able to retain Kenny Phillips.

  • Lamarr56

    We also went 8-8 soo…

  • Kusko_Ken

i agree and think the organization could have handled things better, especially tomlin during the browns “fumble-rama” game. however, i really don’t think mendenhall wanted to be a steeler anymore, or live in pittsburgh for that matter. i can only imagine what kind of letters he received after the twitter incident from the less “cultured” side of steelers nation. i don’t necessarily agree with his tweet but we live in a free country and if you want to tweet stupid shit thats your right. but you have to be prepared for the consequences especially if you’re in the “public-eye”. i wished they could have worked something out cause he was the only zone rb we had.

  • Maurice_hill_district

It means he had not received any good offer. Nobody takes a 1 year deal if they have any mutiyear offer anywhere. So much for the bullcrap about Denver.

  • Jazz

Are you kidding me? The guy was a basket case! Making dorogatory comments about his country; quit on his team, and never could hold on to the ball. See Ya Mendenhall !!!!

  • Jazz

Here we go again; if Tomlin hadn’t done anything, you same two would have said “we need a coach to bring some discipline to the team,” Tomlin benched that idiot because he needed to be benched. And for the record, I wonder why he hasn’t gotten so much attention during Free Agency? Ever think about that? Nobody is going to sign a player like that. Steelers are cleaning house, getting rid of the cancer that was spreading in that locker room. Bring on the Chemo!

  • Jazz

Well he must haven’t been misused that much.

  • Fu-Schnickens

You folks are delusional. The guy had more lives than a cat on this team. They shoulda cut him a looooong time ago. He’s slow to the hole (not “patient” as some people on here seem to think), tentative once he gets there, won’t get the tough yards, doesn’t ever drive through tackles, and will drop to the turf if he hears footsteps. Pathetic. He thinks he’s gonna resurrect his career in Arizona. Good luck. I say that ya’ can’t remove a zebra’s stripes.

  • Fu-Schnickens

Other than the million of chances he had with the Steelers? Gimme a break.

  • Fu-Schnickens

We went 8-8 because our O-line was terrible. He had 200 all-purpose yards for the same reason as every year. He’s a china doll.

  • Fu-Schnickens

To simply use him is to misuse him….

  • Bradys_Dad

May the Lord Bless you as well.

  • Dan

Although I’m generally first in line to bash him and I do think there’s a high probability he’s a nut-case, this is actually a reasonable risk for AZ. He performed well the last year that Arians was around and $2.5mil isn’t a big risk for somebody who if his health (including mental health) is in order could easily have a 1,000 yard season. That being said, I think we have our o-line in order, we could easily get a 1,000 out of Redman, Dwyer or a decent draft pick, so I’m just as happy he’s gone.
