Penn State LB Michael Mauti To Visit Steelers This Week

Former Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti was a guest Saturday on 93.7 The Fan and during his interview, he said that he would be having a pre draft visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers sometime this week.

Mauti, who tore the ACL in his left knee last season, said his rehab is currently ahead of schedule, and also made it known once again that Dr. James Bradley, the Steelers team physician and surgeon, is the one that performed the surgery on him late last year.

Mauti, who wrote a hand-written letter to all 32 teams prior to the combine, was asked during the interview how he thought that he would look in a Steelers uniform next season.

“I think I would look great in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform,” said a laughing Mauti. “Why don\’t you call and tell them to come get me?”

If indeed the Steelers think that Mauti can overcome his third serious knee injury in the last five years, he would be a bargain in the fifth or sixth round later this month. The Steelers would not have to rush him back now that they have re-signed Larry Foote to start at the BUCK position, and they could even place him on the PUP list to start the season.

Mauti, the unquestionable team leader of the Nittany Lions, claims that he will play in 2013. He has a superb character and really would look good in the black and gold if he can fully recover.

You can listen to the full audio of the interview with Mauti below.

I really like the guy.. but 3knee injuries before you even hit the pros is a red flag. If he’s still there in the 6th Rd, then grab him, but not before that

  • This is good news.

  • Jonathon Bert Schade

Take him on day 4 as a FA

  • Rubem Dornas

6th round or even the 5th

Someone did their research. No sense wasting a pick when all indications are he’ll not be drafted. Use picks on players who wont be available after our last pick. Then offer to sign him as an undrafted.

What is the difference between Mauti To and Manti Teo?

  • RW

Absolutely. He’ll be a project anyway. Don’t know why everyone keeps saying that this guy is a guaranteed starter in our defense. He hustles and he can make plays, but he also gets swallowed up in the run game and can’t defend receivers out in space. That’s the real reason no one is interested in drafting him.

  • SteelerDave

    I would say 5th round

  • zyzak

I just don’t see the thrill with this guy

  • zyzak

Teo has been healthy and productive, this guy is just hurt

  • hergieburbur

I agree with Dave, 5th round. The kid has all the intangibles you look for but the knee is a concern.

  • CW

With all those knee injuries he’s more than likely going to be a 7th round draft pick at best. Too many injury red flags for many teams to risk a higher pick on a guy that might never play a full season.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Finally. I was about to say the same thing but I didn’t want to deal with ten posts worth of backlash. When I watched Mauti’s tape I didn’t see a dominant skill set to begin with. With so many needs, I’d rather draft a healthy prospect. Maybe spend a 7th on Mauti. Maybe

  • SteelerDave

Yes he needs improvement in many areas but the reason I like the kid is his character and his leadership. We have way too little of both. He has the potential to develop into a solid Buck LB.
