Steelers Bring In Free Agent OL Antoine Caldwell & LB Tavares Gooden For Free Agent Visits

In addition to meeting with former Arizona Cardinals running back Larod-Stephens Howling on Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will also meet with Houston Texans free agent offensive lineman Antoine Caldwell and former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Tavares Gooden.

Gooden was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the third-round of the 2008 draft. In his last two seasons with the 49ers he has played all of 21 snaps on defense at inside linebacker and is mostly regarded as a special teams contributor at this point in his career.

Caldwell, as we posted on Tuesday, has mostly played right guard since being drafted by the Texans back in 2009 out of Alabama. Caldwell can play center, however, and the Steelers certainly need some depth in the interior part of their offensive line.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Damn Bryan.. you are on it today, thanks for the updates

  • RW

    Seconded.

  • steeltown

I hear Tavares Gooden has struggled with injury throughout his career, college and pros

  • RW

    Get Caldwell signed.

  • dgh57

    Thirded!!!

  • Lamarr56

I doubt Gooden will get signed, due to the fact we just signed Sylvester back.

  • SteelersDepot

Suited up for 31 of last 32 games.I wouldnt call that injury prone at NFL level.

  • RW

Regardless, why add another special teams contributor at the LB position after just signing Sylvester? Unless he’s a special teams ‘ace’, we should focus on other FA signings.

  • steeltown

    no, I wouldnt either

  • Jollyrob68

Sign all three at a low price. Howling Vet mini, Caldwell 3yr deal & Gooden vet mini or2yr deal

  • Kysteeler

Caldwell would be such a nice addition, open up some options in the draft and provide solid back-up experience in the ZB scheme.

  • Jollyrob68

Why haven’t they brought in Larry Grant? It’s like he fell off the earth. I haven’t heard anything on him.

  • SteelersDepot

while they likely wont sign him. you need to think about it as bodies to compete and push each other. a lot of these guys that sign for the minimum will not make the roster. you can only keep 53 players, not 90

  • steeltown

True, Sly on a minimum deal, he could fail to make the final roster

  • RW

Interesting thought, but do FA signings for the minimum come with any guaranteed money? If not, do they count at all against the cap otherwise? Even if they don’t, my hesitation is that our rule of 53 cap number may increase beyond the point where we can sign other free agents that may be more valuable and have a higher chance of making the final roster.

  • David Edward

The min for a 3yr vet like Stevenson is $630k I believe. So, right now that is in the top 51 contracts and would count against the cap…replacing one of the guys making just over $400k. I doubt they guaranteed him anything so no dead money if they cut him unless they gave him a signing bonus. All in all I would guess the signing took up about $200k in space, if it was indeed for the $630k

  • RW

Though $200k is not much, these signings are additive and the displacement numbers grow with each new signing. Thus, I don’t think we can afford signings for special teams unless the player is an ace.

  • SteelersDepot

No guarantees for Sylvester and moved the cap needle a whopping $150K

Why do the Steelers waste players time bringing them in and never signing anyone?
