Steelers Sign NT Steve McLendon To A Three Year Contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers nipped the situation with nose tackle Steve McLendon in the bud on Thursday as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports via Twitter that McLendon signed a three-year deal with a max value of $7.25 million that included $1.675 million guaranteed and $5 million in the first two years of the deal.

McLendon, a restricted free agent, was tendered at right of first refusal level in the amount of $1.323 million prior to the start of free agency. He also reportedly visited with the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday, but hadn\’t signed an offer sheet yet.

Had the Packers inked McLendon to an offer sheet, the Steelers would have had five days to match it or lose their projected starting nose tackle without compensation. With less than $750,000 in available cap space at their disposal, an offer sheet from the Packers with a first year cap hit greater than $2 million would have made it tough for the Steelers to match without clearing additional cap space.

The Steelers made a great decision here as McLendon was worthy of a long-term deal. They can now go into the draft without worrying about addressing the nose tackle position.

  • Berlusconi

How does this change the current salary cap situation?

  • Amen. Colbert did say they would let Free Agency set the market for the unsigned. They did so with Sanders and from the looks of it, with Mclendon as well. Good Move! Now let the young ones battle it out for the back up position.

It looks as though the Steelers nipped this in the butt. Good sign.

  • Chris Ranieri

Probably the best news to date since free agency began.

  • David Edward

Now they’re using their noggin as the old saying goes!

  • Lamarr56

Damn, that’s a lot more than I expected. Still good we got him locked up though.

  • Cody Younkin

Good! Long term though, i think he will be better at the 5 tech with fangupo/ta’amu/hood and NT and Heyward at the 3 tech. That would be the best front with our current players.

I can only guess that the first year cap hit is in the range of his $1.3 million tender.

  • mokhkw

Good move, but I still think they draft another NT at some point.

  • Addison

I can not wait to see him in action. He’s going to make that whole line better!

  • Davide

Sorry man, couldn’t you choose a less shameful nickname ? (i’m an italian steeler fan…)

  • Thanks to the Packers for making this happen doubt our lazy front office would sign him for more than 1 year so thanks Packers haha

  • Davide

Are you sure your nickname is the best one you may have choosen ?
    Sorry man, I’m from Italy…

  • Berlusconi

If I offended you, sorry. Was not ment as a political statement what so ever. Completely random story how i came to that nickname.

  • Kevin Gobleck

GOOD now we won’t need to deal with another RFA contract matching situation get it done and over with!

  • Thanks Packers for helping us sign him our lazy front office would of just gave him one year and than lost him next year

  • Steelers suck

  • I see what you are saying but at this point, drafting a DE in the later rounds would be better for depth on the D-Line. I think between AT and Fangupo, they will have their back up at NT.

  • Clint Martin

    No you got Berlusconi’ed

  • Clint Martin

You just got Berlusconi’ed You being from Italy explains why such the big Vagina. Just Joking LOL

  • Ya never know, maybe BA comes after Redman…although I think they are close to broke as well.

  • mokhkw

He had some action last year & couldn’t take the starting job from Hampton despite his early struggles. He’s good on passing downs, less than good on running & short yardage – which is why I don’t think he’ll ever be our starting NT.
Most people thought he would be the starting NT at this time last year as well.

  • Dan

Based on the numbers provided above, a likely breakdown would be a $1.2mil signing bonus, 2013 base of $475K, 2014 $3.325mil and 2015 $2.25mil. This would be a 2013 cap of $875K creating almost half a mil in new cap space. If that’s the case it sounds like a decent deal. If he does well and wins the starting job, he’s not totally ripped off and he has incentive to renogiate a long term before 2015. We get a good deal if he starts, we get a tolerable deal if he is a back up.

  • If going to the Super Bowl 3 times in the last 8 years sucks, I hope they keep sucking then…

  • Pete

Dave, any idea how much of a cap hit McLendon now represents?

  • Pete

I agree with you. He’s a short term fix in my mind. If Ta’amu doesn’t pan out, they’ll be looking for a NT over the next few drafts.

  • zyzak

Hopefully McLendon can gain some muscle and not be pushed back like he has on running plays

  • steeltown

    Great news!!! Hell yeaaa

In addition to playing the NT position, McLendon can play DE too, he’s quick and very strong. Looking forward to seeing him get significant snaps this season, I think he adds more speed to the front 7

  • steeltown

Glad I dont have to change my avatar AGAIN

  • mokhkw

He reminds me of Kimo, who was our NT after Steed retired & before we drafted Hampton. Kimo ended up being a very good 3-4 DE for us. Similarly McLendon could move to DE after this season as I can’t see the Steelers re-signing or extending Ziggy after 2013. He may even end up there this season.

  • Davide

No, absolutely, no offense !!…I was kidding. It’s just for your…safety ! You have to pay attention with that nickname…..but I’m sure you know what kind of person he is…. ! :-))

it has been funny for me to “meet” his name even here…’s seems to be impossible do not hear about him every day !!!!

    Go steelers !

  • steeltown

I agree, they wont draft NT now… maybe next year or the year after if Ta’amu or Fang fail to show anything

  • Ha!!

  • Kevin Gobleck

Well if they take Redman we’ll get Bradshaw, its a win win

  • hergieburbur

  • hergieburbur

He was probably the RFA I was most worried about losing. Glad they took care of it.

  • hergieburbur

That works for me too as long as we have a solid NT. I will say though, that I think part of the reason he didn’t take Hampton’s job is that Tomlin is overly loyal to the older guys, even when it is apparent someone younger should be playing.

  • hergieburbur

If someone comes after Redman, I would be they let him walk. With Dwyer already signed and RBs being one of the easiest positions to get an immediate impact player at in the draft, I think he is our least important RFA.

  • TheBlitz

It appears the FO is reactive instead of proactive. Not good at all!
They are being forced to make decisions by other teams in the league.

This is not a great show of confidence by the FO. History shows that Steelers are an organisation that does not panic. However, twice in a matter of days they haven’t shown a lot of swag.

I’m glad they signed him though.

  • I am not opposed to that at all if he is gonna be ready to go. Redman is not exactly the poster boy of health either.

  • CW

Well that clears up a lot of worry. Thankfully the Steelers signed him fast.

  • NW86

Great News! We get our starting NT signed for reasonably cheap money for 3 years!
And the offseason roller coaster ride continues. It’s funny how we fans can be ready to jump off the ledge one moment, thinking our front office doesn’t know what it is doing, then we heap praise on them the next. Just remember, there are always negotiations going on behind the scenes – the Steelers just don’t always want to publicize it. You don’t think they’ve offered a long-term deal to Manny Sanders as well? They just haven’t been able to agree on the dollars, and Manny may prefer to take the 1 year deal to go out and improve his value before hitting the open market. It ALWAYS takes 2 sides to make a deal.

  • Eric MacLaurin

    Big commitment by the steelers!

They are really throwing around some money these days. What is this one? About $300,000?

  • Eric MacLaurin

    Isn’t the deadline tomorrow?

  • Steelers32

  • steeltown

The deadline for other Teams to provide offer sheets is tomorrow

  • zipposteelers

Ok I hit the panic button too soon. These are not the old Steelers FO.
This franchise does want to win and will make reasonable moves to retain their guys.

  • SteelerDave

He is a 3-4 DE much, much more than a NT in a 3-4. However in a 4-3 he is an excellent DT as is Hood. We have linemen with ability sets not condusive to where they can excel and that is what is hurting us.

  • SteelSpine

I agree. Plus the word I use to describe Mac is disruptive. There are DLinemen who can tie up blockers (& I realize that’s all 3-4 DL are supposed to do) but I had seen enough flashes of McClendon wreaking havoc to blocking schemes, it was refreshing, so hopefully he’ll do that as a starter. Finally we’ll get to find out because Steelers aren’t paying this to be a backup.

My wish-list is either Fang or Taamu or someone else surprises enough to play NT in 2014 so McNasty can move to DE after this year & do damage there. Steelers don’t do that their NTs, but I think McNasty would be an upgrade at DE for us, I would like to at-least find out if he is an upgrade at either DE spot.

  • Isaac Reveles

i think Ziggy would make a good NT and switch McLendon to DE
