Steelers Place CB Justin King On Injured Reserve, Sign CB Nigel Malone

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a couple of roster moves on Thursday as it was announced that cornerback Justin King was placed on injured reserve and undrafted rookie free agent cornerback Nigel Malone was signed.

King was originally signed by the Steelers on December 18, 2012 due to the injuries at the cornerback position, but was inactive for the final two games of the regular season. He was originally drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the fourth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

King is believed to have been suffering from a hamstring injury this offseason.

Malone was originally signed by the Indianapolis Colts out of Kansas State.

Malone transferred to Kansas State from a junior college in 2011 and is best suited for a zone coverage scheme. He is not afraid of contact, however, he does not have ideal size at 5’10″ and 185 pounds, and isn’t the fleetest of foot.

Not sure he would make it anyway. It’s a pretty crowded defensive backfield right now.

Dave, how does this affect the salary cap?

  • SteelersDepot

right now it doesn’t. He very well could wind up being released from IR before the start of the season if injury is not serious. If he starts the season on IR he will cost $42,059 a week against cap.

Agreed.. After the known starters, you still have C.Brown, Hawthorne, Van Dyke, Victorian and the young kid Isaiah Green…. ALL might have beat him out in camp regardless

  • steeltown

What if he is released before the season? I am foggy on the whole IR, waived and/or injury settlement against cap scenarios

  • SteelersDepot

When healthy, just a flat out release from IR, which I am sure King wants as well so he can play in 2013. No dead money associated with him.

Why wasn’t he put on the IR with the Waived/Injured designation like the other guys?

On a related topic, if a guy who has little chance to make the team suffers a torn ACL at an OTA or minicamp, are the Steelers obligated to carry that salary on their cap the entire season?

    can’t waive/injured a vested veteran.

more injuries and another hammy ????? so whats deal here why are steelers always having hammy probs time to hire a yoga instructor

  • Putter

Pretty safe to say that J King will not be on the 53-man roster. Hard to picture putting someone on IR for a hammy in June that you really want to keep around…..all of that to get an undrafted player that is undersized and slow (that’s gotta hurt the pride a bit)…’s like getting traded for 4 footballs and a kicking tee.

Dumb question so the only benefit of a player being placed on IR now is so we can bring in another healthy body to camp? Also is there a time table that the Steelers use to assess when to place a guy on IR this early in the year?
