Steelers To Wear 1934 Striped Bumble Bee Throwback Uniforms Once In 2013

I hope you enjoyed the 1934 bumble bee throwback uniforms that the Pittsburgh Steelers wore last season, because team president Art Rooney II told Bob Labriola of Steelers Digest during a Wednesday interview that the team will again wear the yellow and black striped uniforms during the 2013 season.

The Steelers wore the striped uniforms in the home games last season against the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Ravens. Rooney II did not say which home game that the uniform, complete with matching striped socks, would be worn in this season.

In addition to talking about the throwbacks, Rooney II also told Labriola that he would like to eventually see the NFL Draft moved around from city to city instead of it only taking place in New York City. He said that he would love to see it come to Pittsburgh in the future.

The interview that Labriola did with Rooney II will be up on steelers.com later on Wednesday.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

    please no

Oh yea! These jerseys are so unusually cool, which why I picked up my own #94 TImmons bumble bee jersey. Hopefully they wear it against the lions, that’s the game I’m going to and you know I’ll be wearing my bumble bee.

I LOVE the bumblebee uniforms! They are my favorite throwbacks. Really glad they will be back this season.

  • steeltown

Cool… they usually play well when wearing throwbacks… plus these particular ones seem to strike a bad chord with fans across the League… I love hearing the complaining

  • cencalsteeler

This organization is fortunate to have such rich history, and I am all for them wearing the uni’s. Love the bumblebees!

  • TJimmy

As long as the team stings the competition, I’ll tolerate it.

  • AzheDraven

Yes!! I wanted a bumble bee jersey but I just could not pay for it. And I was worried after the 2012 season they would not wear it another time because it appears everybody hates them. This will give me a year to save money and choose what player

There’s one reason I don’t like these uniforms. The helmet. If they’re going to look like they’re back in 1934 then why the heck do they stop at the helmet??? Wearing their current helmet with the bumble bee jersey looks ridiculous and unauthentic. Besides, they weren’t even the Steelers back then, and they wore leather helmets. Look at the Redskins throwbacks. They nailed the helmet perfectly with a fake leather pattern and a matte finish. The Packers throwbacks are similar, but they chose to go with a gloss finish on the helmet and it just doesn’t work.

  • neil

What? Only once? Don’t they wear throwbacks twice a season? Gotta be worst unis in NFL. Even threw a play-by-play guy for a loss when he couldn’t tell one tight end from another because of the unreadable numerals. (And we thought the Ravens’ uniforms were ugly.)

  • hergieburbur

Hate those things. The other alternates are way better.

  • Phlipside

Dear God no. All my non Steeler nation friends look at those then ask me “What the heck are your guys wearing?” They’re embarrassing and ugly

  • Rob H

I don’t allow myself to get as upset by them as some people do, but I really am curious as to why they insist on wearing something so amazingly ugly and ridiculous looking (two seasons in a row). Who actually looked at these things and thought it would be a good idea to have the Steelers dress this way, I actually feel bad for the players, it’s got to be embarrassing just to put those things on, not to mention having to be seen in public wearing them.

  • 2443scott

maybe art ll came up with the bee design lol ……i dont care what they wear as long as they win ….i am for moving the draft to each city start with oldest team state first so like steelers and eagles they get one draft for pa and so on so on if you go by every team it take 30 some years ..so miami jacksonville panthers all get one draft cause they are all southern east coast flip a coin here …just like superbowl it should go to every state as well ..we can skip ohio teams .

  • spockmckoy

I want to see them wear the striped/city logo shield on the chest jersey. they are pretty cool looking.

  • SteelersNick

I agree with steeltown, the steelers play well when they wear these uniforms.

  • ecummins82

They’re only “embarrassing and ugly” to anyone who apparently doesn’t have an appreciation for a history as long and old as the Steelers organization has been. True fans find the appreciation in the evolution of the jersey over all those years that the team has been around. I personally love the bumble bee jersey’s.

  • ecummins82

Honestly, I could care less that everyone else hated them. Those jersey’s are part of the HISTORY of the team and anyone NOT a Steelers fan wouldn’t get that.

  • ecummins82

    Couldn’t agree more!

  • ecummins82

Except some of the players HAVE said they like the way the jersey’s look. So, it can’t be embarrassing for all of them…

  • Rob

I wish they would wear camouflage on defense so the other team would have trouble seeing defenders.

  • Phlipside

“True fans”? What an enormous pile of tripe. I am a long time fan and a student of the history of the game. I understand that these are part of the history of the team. Time passes, sensibilities change. These are wonderful historic mementos. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t find these uniforms “ugly and embarrassing”. You love them. Good for you. I can acknowledge that we disagree without resorting to insults.

    1933 Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey Please!

  • steves

I wonder if the original uniforms were rejected from the Penitentiary?

  • Nine

I’m a Steelers fan but I still hate them.

  • Ahmad

Yes! Those jerseys have grown on me.

  • VaDave

I guess its to each his own with no accounting for taste. Personally, I would love to see our 90’s version with the block numbers, as opposed to going back to an era when there was no TV, no color photos in the papers, and very few fans to come up with ideas. JMO.

  • Douglas Andrews

Those uniforms are God awful!! Please spare us

  • Mike

Love these jerseys. Only wish the socks were readily available for fans to purchase as well!

  • Craig Cunningham

    Greatest jersey ever.

  • Brendon Glad

I love them, and bought one myself. I laughed at them at first, but they grew on me big-time. Glad to see they are back.
STEELERS NATION LISTEN TO THIS REQUEST: I have a request that I’d like to see y’all try when they wear them the one time. I tried to get it going when I attended the Ravens game, but no one (other than one little kid behind me) would join me. I WANT TO HEAR WHAT IT WOULD SOUND LIKE IF 69,000 people buzzed like bumble-bees when the opposing offense is at the line of scrimmage. To me, it would be a complete “mind-XXXX” I was buzzing so loud that the young man next to me said he checked his phone because he thought it was vibrating. JUST TRY IT ONE GAME FOR ME! Could end up being a cool tradition. If it doesn’t work…ditch it. :-) It sounds stupid, I know…but I think it would be disorienting to an offense even more than random yelling/clapping/whooping.

  • NimbusHex

The striped uniforms are a lot better than the yellow number/yellow helmet/white pants abominations.

  • Brendon Glad

The non-Steeler nation friends are just jealous…I’d compare it to when a female friend who has insecurity issues takes shots at another girl who is clearly more attractive than said-friend. I’m playing around mainly…but those retro’s are PIMPIN’ in my opinion!!!!

  • Brendon Glad

    BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!! Swarm ‘em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Guest

the throwback uniform concept for all NFL teams are old news been there done that

  • Guest

been a die hard Steeler fan for 40 years and i think those uniforms are pathetic and theirs a reason the moved on from those lame striped uni’s and progressed to the coolest uniforms on the planet

  • Guest

totally agree it was a disturbingly funny joke to wear them even once but should never be worn again

  • Don

    HAHAHAHA you are precious,,,
