Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey Says He Took A Lot Of Heat For Wearing Free Hernandez Hat

Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey has arrived at Latrobe for the start of training camp, and he answered questions from the media regarding him being photographed with his twin brother Mike Pouncey during his birthday party a few weeks ago while wearing “Free Hernandez” hats.

Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports via Twitter that Maurkice said, “he took a lot of heat” for the wearing the hat, and that he has since talked to head coach Mike Tomlin about the incident.

Will Graves of the Associated Press also reports on Twitter that Maurkice apologized again for the incident and let it be known that he is ready to play.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Maurkice, however, would not say whether or not he has talked to his former University of Florida teammate Aaron Hernandez since he was charged with murder a few weeks ago.

There will certainly be more quotes coming from Maurkice over the course of the next few hours, but it appears as though he is handling the backlash much better than his brother did when he arrived for the start of the Miami Dolphins training camp last week.

Maurkice did well in getting this out of the way right away so that it doesn\’t serve as a distraction for him or the rest of the team. You have to wonder if Tomlin advised him to do just that.

This is what these 3guys chose to ask and/or later report??……blah

  • Shea Fahr

Good. Now let’s get this camp on.

Glad to see Pouncey is getting this distraction out of the way for himself and the team. Now the focus can get back to football.

  • VaDave

Thankfully, this is now a non story. Play Ball!

  • Ahmad

OK it’s over and done with. Move along folks nothing to see here.

He said all the right things and handled it well. Good for him (and the Steelers) I dont know if Mike has yet to apologize.

  • Brendon Glad

I’m glad he apologized. And I hope it was sincere. I don’t think hardly anyone in Steelers Nation begrudges a person’s own very-personal beliefs (I will be watching recaps from the trial just like everyone else before I decide my own thoughts 100%)….but mugging for the camera with that hat on was “flippant”, and disrespectful to the Odin Lloyd family.
Because AS of NOW, before the trial, and since arrests have been made, it is almost 100% certain that the Lloyd family, like the majority of the nation, lean-towards/firmly-believe Aaron Hernandez was HEAVILY involved in the brutal execution of Odin Lloyd.
So it was in very poor-taste…even if the evidence overwhelmingly proves the Pounceys as correct. There still was no point in doing that before the trial.

And if they watch the trial, Hernandez is convicted, and they still believe it is completely an innocent man imprisoned, then a sit-down interview with Larry King/Katy Couric/…etc…still is a WAY better way to express it than the display that they did at that party.
I was very down on both Pounceys when I heard about this. His apology (twice) was enough for me. I’m ready to move on and support him. But don’t get it twisted…if he had been stubborn like his brother has been about it…I’d have a major problem with him. Because it would suggest that he “just doesn’t get it”.
